The Xbox Store listing reviewed marks the game as cloud playable with Game Pass Premium and Ultimate, but Activision’s cloud-play guidance says you must also own the Xbox version and have Game Pass Ultimate. Those details describe cloud streaming—not a confirmed subscription download. Availability may vary by region, so check your local Xbox Store listing.
Is Modern Warfare II coming to Game Pass?
No dated, title-specific announcement confirming that Modern Warfare II is joining the Game Pass catalog was identified in the official sources reviewed. A report by PC Gamer says an unnamed Activision source indicated that more back-catalog Call of Duty games were planned for Game Pass in 2026. That points to a broader plan, but does not confirm that MWII is included or give an arrival date.
Be careful with headlines that turn that broader expectation into a specific MWII release announcement. Xbox announced cloud access for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III in October 2024; that announcement was about MWIII, not a new MWII catalog addition. Xbox Wire’s October 2024 announcement identifies the game and access context.
What does the Xbox Store listing mean?
The Xbox Store listing reviewed labels Modern Warfare II as cloud playable with Game Pass Premium and Ultimate. It is a Poland-localized page, so its label should not be treated as a guarantee that the same access is offered in every region or account.

- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II - Xbox One/ Xbox Series X
“Cloud playable” means streaming the game rather than downloading it to play locally. It is a different access route from joining a subscription’s downloadable game catalog. Activision’s requirements for MWII cloud play are more restrictive than the Store label: its support page says players need to own the Xbox game and have an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription. The listing and support guidance do not establish that a Premium subscription alone grants every player access.
What you need for MWII cloud gaming
According to Activision’s Xbox Cloud Gaming support page, cloud access to MWII requires:
Rank #2
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
- Ownership of Modern Warfare II on Xbox.
- An active Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
- A linked Activision account.
- A supported controller or mouse and keyboard.
Activision states: “Ownership of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II on Xbox platform required to access the game through Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta).” That ownership requirement applies to the cloud-play route described on its support page; it should not be confused with a claim that every kind of Game Pass access requires buying the game.
How to check your own access
- Open the Modern Warfare II page in your regional Xbox Store and review the listed subscription access and whether it says cloud playable.
- For cloud streaming, check Activision’s requirements and confirm that your Xbox ownership, Ultimate subscription, linked Activision account, device, and input method meet them.
- If you want a local download through a subscription rather than streaming, look for an explicit catalog or install option in your regional Xbox account. A cloud-play label alone does not confirm downloadable subscription access.
Can you play without Game Pass?
Activision documents an Xbox Cross-Gen physical edition playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in its Modern Warfare II Editions FAQ. The FAQ also identifies MWII as the sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare and gives its global launch date as October 28, 2022. Check current local availability before relying on a physical copy as an option.
