Difficulty is also not fixed across the whole game. Steam lists Adjustable Difficulty and Save Anytime as accessibility features. The developer has additionally changed late-game content in response to player feedback. Those facts support a flexible experience, but they do not establish that every strategic system becomes simple or that every player will find the hardest encounters comfortable.
What you have to learn
The dice-and-grid relationship
Dicevaders uses a grid with six columns. A Steam Community review describes three dice being rolled per turn, with the columns rolled determining which units score and which special effects activate. PC Gamer’s October 3, 2026 hands-on account also describes three dice activating columns and emphasizes that the game contains many moving parts.
The important lesson is that a die result is not valuable in isolation. Its value depends on what occupies the corresponding column and what other effects can trigger at the same time. Early turns can therefore be spent learning to read the board: identify the columns that matter this turn, see which units will activate, and notice whether a result creates a useful combination or merely produces points without advancing your plan.
Unit placement and synergies
Building an army is more than collecting individually powerful units. Placement determines which columns can score, and units can interact through special effects and multipliers. The exact strength of a unit depends on the surrounding setup, the dice available, and the artifacts supporting it.

This is where the game can feel harder than its introductory rules suggest. A player who evaluates every unit separately may miss a stronger combination. Conversely, committing to a clever-looking combination can leave a run fragile if future rolls do not reach the required columns. Learning involves recognizing useful patterns while accepting that the next roll may force a change of plan.
Artifacts and conditional effects
Artifacts add another layer of conditional effects and multipliers. They can make a particular column, unit type, or scoring pattern more valuable, but they also increase the number of relationships you must track. A choice that looks weak before an artifact is acquired may become central afterward; an effect that was excellent in one run may be awkward in another.

Resource management therefore contributes to the learning curve even when the underlying roll is easy to understand. You are learning not just what a button does, but when changing a result is worth its cost and when an imperfect roll is acceptable.
Why the game can feel harder after the basics click

Adjustable Difficulty confirms that the game offers some control over challenge, but the reviewed listing does not state the names of the settings, the numerical modifiers, or which systems they change. It would be inaccurate to promise that a lower setting removes the need to understand synergies, resource trade-offs, or dice manipulation. Treat the option as a way to tune the experience, not as proof that the strategic layer disappears.
What happened with the late game?
Difficulty feedback was especially visible around Chapter 6. In an early October 2026 Steam Community update, developer Pengonauts said that Chapter 6 “was not fun for a lot of players” and that it restricted parts of Dicevaders people enjoyed. The update described nerfs and encounter changes.
The same announcement framed Chapter 6 as an intended one-time, true-ending-style fight and said the developer wanted a different replayable hardest difficulty in a future major update. That statement describes planned work; it is not proof that the separate mode had shipped by October 13, 2026.

For a prospective player, the practical takeaway is that the launch-era late game may contain a sharper challenge or a different set of restrictions than the earlier chapters. How to make the learning curve manageable
The following approach uses the systems described by the game and keeps the early goal narrow: learn to read a turn before trying to build a perfect run.
- Start by reading the six columns. Before spending a resource, identify which columns the current dice can activate and which of your units benefit from them.
- Separate immediate value from setup value. Note whether a result scores now, enables a special effect, or positions you for a later combination. This prevents every decision from becoming a hunt for the largest visible number.
- Change one variable at a time. When testing an artifact or unit interaction, avoid changing your entire army simultaneously. Keeping most of the setup stable makes it easier to see what the new effect contributes.
- Reserve rerolls for meaningful outcomes. A reroll is most informative when it changes whether a key column or conditional effect activates. Using resources on every mediocre result can hide the cost of future flexibility.
- Reassess after new rewards. A newly offered unit or artifact can change which columns matter. Compare it with your current plan instead of assuming that the strongest-looking standalone effect is automatically correct.
- Use adjustable difficulty while learning interactions. If the available setting lowers pressure, it can give you more turns to observe how dice, placement, and artifacts combine. The exact effect of the setting is not specified in the listing, so evaluate it by the decisions it still requires.
- Use Save Anytime for short practice sessions. Stopping after a difficult encounter or an unfamiliar reward lets you return with a clear head rather than rushing a decision because of session length.
This is not a guaranteed optimal strategy; it is a way to turn a large system into smaller questions. The goal of early runs is to learn which columns and effects belong together, not to prove that every run can be rescued.

Is Dicevaders beginner friendly?
