Donkey Kong 64 is available on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 through the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics library. You need an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership; the game is not offered as a separate Switch purchase. Nintendo announced its addition for June 4, 2026, so it is available now.
How to play Donkey Kong 64 on Switch
- Get Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The Nintendo 64 classics library is part of this tier; the base Nintendo Switch Online membership is not the stated access route for Donkey Kong 64. See Nintendo’s membership FAQ.
- Download the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics app. On your console, find the Nintendo Classics library in the console interface or Nintendo eShop and download it. Nintendo’s instructions cover Switch 2, Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch – OLED Model: how to download Nintendo Switch Online classic game libraries.
- Open the app and choose Donkey Kong 64. The game joined the library on June 4, 2026, according to Nintendo’s announcement.
Do you need Expansion Pack, or is the base membership enough?
You need Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack for the Nintendo 64 library. Nintendo’s North American support FAQ describes Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy classics as Expansion Pack benefits; Nintendo GameCube classics are available on Switch 2 only. The base membership alone does not provide the stated access to Donkey Kong 64.
Can you buy Donkey Kong 64 separately?
Nintendo Support says classic games require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and that there are no plans to sell them individually outside the service. Treat Donkey Kong 64 as membership-based library access, not a standalone Switch eShop release. Because access depends on an active membership, it is different from buying a game once and keeping access independently of a service.
Can you play offline, and what controllers work?
Nintendo says classic games can be played offline, but the console must connect to the internet at least once every seven days to verify membership. An active membership is still required for access.

A Nintendo 64 controller is an optional accessory for Nintendo’s classic-game libraries. Nintendo lists it as compatible, but its guidance does not say it is required for Donkey Kong 64; consult the Nintendo 64 Controller FAQ for accessory details.
