Yes—the official EmuParadise website remains reachable, but its original public ROM-download service did not return. EmuParadise removed downloadable copyrighted-game files in August 2018 after legal pressure across the ROM-hosting scene. The site still shows ROM categories, counters and old download wording, so a page loading today should not be mistaken for proof that the former library is officially active.
What “still up” actually means
Several different questions get compressed into the phrase “Is EmuParadise down?” They have different answers.
| Question | Best-supported answer |
|---|---|
| Does the official domain exist? | Yes. emuparadise.me remains reachable, subject to ordinary regional, ISP, browser and temporary-outage differences. |
| Does the homepage still show retro-gaming material? | Yes. It presents game databases, emulator information, music, guides, magazines and other sections. |
| Was the original public ROM-download service restored? | No reliable official evidence supports that conclusion. |
| Is every listed section functional or current? | Do not assume so. Legacy pages, counters and links remain visible. |
| Is downloading any copyrighted ROM automatically legal? | No. Authorization, the particular work, your jurisdiction and the circumstances all matter. |
The practical distinction is simple: a domain can be online while a major service that once operated there has ended.
What happened in August 2018?
The legal pressure came from elsewhere
In June 2018, Nintendo sued the operators of LoveROMs and LoveRetro. Contemporary coverage linked that legal campaign to a wider change in the ROM-hosting landscape. EmuParadise then announced in August 2018 that it would stop providing downloadable versions of copyrighted classic games rather than expose its operators and contributors to potentially severe legal consequences.

Ars Technica’s contemporaneous report, PCGamesN’s account and Neowin’s report describe the change as EmuParadise removing its ROM files and continuing in a reduced, information-oriented form.
It is misleading to say Nintendo simply shut EmuParadise down
The available reporting does not establish that Nintendo sued EmuParadise in the announcement that changed the site. The more accurate description is that legal action against other ROM sites created immediate pressure, and EmuParadise voluntarily stopped its public ROM downloads in response.
Does EmuParadise still host ROMs?
The current homepage still displays ROM and ISO category labels, large numerical counts and download-oriented language such as “Download and play.” Those are visible remnants of the site’s older presentation. They do not demonstrate that the corresponding files are publicly downloadable, that links still work, or that any file is authorized.
The historical record says the public ROM service was removed in 2018. A search result, an old category page or a button left in a template cannot outweigh that record without a clear, current announcement from EmuParadise itself.

What about scripts, archived links and user claims?
Users have posted anecdotal claims about browser scripts or old endpoints exposing downloads, including discussions on r/Roms and r/Piracy. Such reports are unofficial, can become obsolete, may redirect to third-party files and can introduce security or legal risks. They are not evidence of an officially restored EmuParadise service. This article does not recommend bypassing disabled links.
Why does the homepage still look like a ROM site?
EmuParadise appears to have retained substantial legacy presentation after the 2018 change:
- ROM and ISO category labels and historical counters.
- Old “latest news” entries and download-focused promotional copy.
- Embedded videos and community material.
- Pages that were not comprehensively redesigned when public ROM distribution ended.
A counter may describe an old database record rather than a live inventory. Likewise, a visible category can be an archive or an incomplete section. Treat the homepage as evidence that the website persists, not as a current catalog of downloadable games.
What can you still use EmuParadise for?
The homepage presents EmuParadise as more than a file repository. Depending on the individual page, surviving material may include:

Is EmuParadise safe?
Technical safety is not established by a slogan
EmuParadise may describe itself as safe, but that is first-party promotional copy, not an independent security audit. Visiting the exact official domain is different from downloading an unknown file that uses the EmuParadise name.
- Check that the address is exactly emuparadise.me and uses HTTPS.
- Be suspicious of “EmuParadise 2,” “EmuParadise ROMs” and mirror domains.
- Do not click multiple deceptive download buttons or install a supposed download manager.
- Avoid unexpected executable files, password-protected archives and browser extensions or userscripts promising restored downloads.
- Watch for redirects to unrelated domains or third-party file hosts.
HTTPS encrypts a connection; it does not certify that a file is authorized, malware-free or actively maintained.
The legal page is a disclaimer, not permission
EmuParadise’s legal and DMCA page describes the project as preservation-oriented, says users are responsible for checking local law and states that users must be authorized to use downloaded files. It also identifies [email protected] for copyright-removal requests. Those statements do not create a blanket legal safe harbor for copyrighted ROM downloads.

For U.S. readers, owning an original cartridge or disc does not automatically settle whether downloading an identical file from an unauthorized third party is lawful. Backup copying, format-shifting, downloading and distribution can be treated differently, and rules vary by country and by facts. Consult applicable local law for a specific situation.
Are emulators legal?
Emulator software and game files are separate issues.
- Emulators: software can be lawful in itself, depending on how it was developed and distributed.
- ROMs and ISOs: these are copies of copyrighted game software; unauthorized distribution or downloading can raise infringement concerns.
- BIOS and firmware: these may carry separate copyright or licensing restrictions.
- Homebrew, public-domain and rights-holder releases: these can be safer sources, but each item still needs verification.
The World Intellectual Property Organization discussion of ROM duplication and distribution helps explain why “emulation” is not a legal label that automatically covers every file source. A VPN does not grant copyright permission, validate a file or make a questionable source trustworthy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to tell an official page from a clone
- Confirm the domain is exactly emuparadise.me, not a lookalike spelling or a different top-level domain.
- Confirm the connection uses HTTPS, while remembering that HTTPS alone proves only transport encryption.
- Check whether a link redirects to an unrelated domain.
- Reject pages demanding payment for access to a supposedly free archive or presenting unexpected executable installers.
- Do not treat search snippets, old forum posts or a working button as proof of an official, authorized download service.
Why search results disagree
Search engines can combine cached pre-2018 descriptions, third-party uptime checks, clone domains, old news stories and user posts about workarounds. Some articles call the whole site “shut down” when they mean the ROM service ended; others call it “back” because the domain responds.

Legitimate ways to play classic games in 2026
Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo’s official classic-game libraries cover NES, SNES, Game Boy, N64, Sega Genesis, Game Boy Advance, GameCube on Nintendo Switch 2 and Virtual Boy, depending on platform and membership tier. Nintendo’s U.S. support page lists individual plans at $3.99 for one month, $7.99 for three months and $19.99 for 12 months; Expansion Pack individual is $49.99 for 12 months; family is $34.99 for 12 months and Expansion Pack family is $79.99 for 12 months. See the official pricing page.
The service is a poor fit for PlayStation, Dreamcast, arcade, DOS and broad multi-platform coverage. Nintendo says classic games remain available while the relevant membership is active and that periodic internet verification may be required; see its classic-games information.
Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration
Atari 50 is a commercial collection with more than 100 playable classic games, historical material and six new titles. The official page confirms the content but does not provide a single reliable current price, so check the relevant platform store. It is not a substitute for Nintendo, Sega Saturn, PlayStation or unrelated third-party catalogs.

RetroArch is free, multi-platform emulation front-end software available through official or recognized platforms. It does not supply a lawful commercial-game library. Pair it with homebrew, public-domain or otherwise authorized files, not instructions for obtaining copyrighted ROMs from unauthorized sites.
