Your old Nintendo Switch AC adapter is probably not broken. The original HAC-002 adapter can charge a Switch 2 when connected directly to the console, but it cannot provide the power required by the Switch 2 dock for docked charging and TV output. For that job, use the Switch 2 adapter, NGN-01, or a carefully verified alternative rated at least 54W.
The short version
- HAC-002: The original Switch adapter. It still charges a Switch 2 directly through either USB-C port and continues to work with the original Switch, but it is not compatible with the Switch 2 dock for TV mode.
- NGN-01: The Switch 2 adapter Nintendo recommends for the Switch 2 dock.
- Alternative adapter: Nintendo states that a replacement for dock use should provide at least 54W, but wattage alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Nintendo describes this as a power-output limitation, not a firmware lock or proof that your old brick has failed. Sources: Nintendo’s compatibility guidance and Switch 2 charging guidance.
Identify the charger before buying anything
The model number is printed on the power brick itself. A USB-C connector is not enough to establish compatibility.
| Hardware | Model | Switch 2 dock compatible? |
|---|---|---|
| Original Switch AC adapter | HAC-002 | No; direct console charging only |
| Switch 2 AC adapter | NGN-01 | Yes; Nintendo’s recommended adapter |
The Switch 2 dock itself is model BEE-005. Nintendo also says the original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. See Nintendo’s adapter-identification page and the accessory compatibility table.

What HAC-002 still does—and what it cannot do
| Use | HAC-002 result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Charge Switch 2 directly | Works | Connect the adapter to the console’s top or bottom USB-C port. |
| Charge the original Switch | Works | It remains a normal original-Switch power supply. |
| Power the Switch 2 dock | Does not work reliably | The dock requires more power than HAC-002 can provide. |
| Enable Switch 2 TV output | Does not work | Docked video requires the correct dock power supply. |
| Replace NGN-01 as a complete dock solution | No | Direct charging capability does not make it a dock adapter. |
If HAC-002 charges the handheld but produces no TV image through the dock, that behavior is expected. It does not by itself indicate a dead charger.
Why direct charging works while docked mode fails
The physical connector is only part of the specification. Nintendo says the adapters have different power output and that HAC-002 cannot provide enough power for the Switch 2 dock. Direct charging asks the adapter to charge the console; docked operation must also supply the dock while it handles TV output and connected accessories. That additional demand is an engineering explanation consistent with Nintendo’s stated limitation, not a published breakdown of the dock’s internal power budget.
There is no official evidence here of an authentication chip or software block. Treat this as a power-capacity incompatibility.

What to buy for a Switch 2 dock
Official NGN-01: the lowest-risk choice
Buy the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter, model NGN-01, from Nintendo or an authorized retailer. Nintendo confirms that replacement adapters are sold separately; check the current listing at Nintendo’s US store. The official support page does not establish a current universal US price, so do not rely on an old price listing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA third-party 54W-or-more adapter
Nintendo states that an alternative adapter for Switch 2 dock use should provide at least 54W. That is a stated threshold, not a guarantee that every 54W, 60W, or 100W charger will work. Nintendo warns that unlicensed products may have compatibility problems because they have not undergone Nintendo’s testing.
- Confirm USB-C output specifications, not just the headline wattage.
- Use a cable rated for the required power; a USB-C plug does not make every cable equivalent.
- Choose a reputable manufacturer with clear safety certifications.
- Verify approval for your country’s voltage and electrical standards. Nintendo’s regional guidance is at this charging page.
- Prefer a seller with a practical return policy in case TV mode does not work.
Do you need another dock?
Usually not. If your BEE-005 dock works and only its power brick is missing, replace the adapter rather than buying a complete dock. A second dock makes sense for another TV location or when the existing dock is damaged.

Troubleshoot a blank TV screen or dock that will not charge
Work through the components in order before declaring the console defective.
- Check the model number. NGN-01 is the correct Switch 2 adapter. HAC-002 is for direct charging only. Nintendo explains the labeling at its adapter diagnostics page.
- Test direct charging. Remove the console from the dock and connect the adapter to the top or bottom USB-C port. If HAC-002 charges it, the brick is functioning for handheld use; that result does not qualify it to run the dock.
- Reset the adapter. Disconnect it from the wall and from the dock or console, wait at least 30 seconds, then reconnect it. One Nintendo TV-output procedure specifies a 20-second wait for its particular reset sequence, so follow the interval on the relevant support page rather than treating one number as universal.
- Reconnect a minimal dock setup. Use the BEE-005 Switch 2 dock, NGN-01 (or a properly verified alternative), the intended HDMI cable, and a direct connection to the TV. Temporarily remove power strips, converters, HDMI splitters, and similar intermediary devices. See Nintendo’s TV troubleshooting steps.
- Update the software. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings → System → System Update. For dock firmware, use System Settings → System → Dock Update. Menu names can change with firmware revisions.
- Substitute one component at a time. Try a known-good NGN-01, another HDMI cable, and another TV HDMI input. Check whether the console display turns off when it is properly docked.
- Escalate only after substitution. If a known-good adapter fixes the setup, replace the original adapter. If the fault remains with known-good power, dock, cable, and TV input, consult Nintendo service. Relevant guidance includes blank-screen troubleshooting and no-video troubleshooting.
Nintendo’s dock USB ports also have conditions that can look like a power failure: the console must be docked and either on or in Sleep Mode. The ports do not output power when no console is docked or when the console is completely powered off. See Nintendo’s USB-power guidance.
Common mistakes to avoid
“The old charger is useless.”
It is not. HAC-002 remains useful for direct Switch 2 charging and original Switch hardware. Its specific limitation is Switch 2 dock compatibility.

“Any USB-C charger will work.”
Connector shape does not define power capability. Check the adapter model, output profile, cable rating, regional approval, and vendor reliability.
“A 60W label guarantees TV mode.”
No. Nintendo’s stated minimum is 54W or more, while also warning about unlicensed alternatives. Meeting a number on a label is not Nintendo certification.
“The original dock should work because the consoles look similar.”
Nintendo says the original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. Use the BEE-005 Switch 2 dock.

“No picture means the Switch 2 is broken.”
Underpowered adapters, HDMI cables, TV inputs, intermediaries, dock firmware, and the dock itself can all produce similar symptoms. Test systematically first.
“A damaged brick is fine if it still charges.”
Stop using an adapter with a frayed, split, kinked, loose, or otherwise damaged cable or housing. Nintendo advises replacing a physically damaged Switch 2 adapter with a working licensed adapter; see its replacement guidance.
Which option fits your setup?
| Choice | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Official NGN-01 | Reliable dock and TV setup | May cost more than a general USB-C charger |
| Reputable 54W+ alternative | One charger for multiple devices | Compatibility is not guaranteed by wattage alone |
| Keep HAC-002 | Spare handheld charging or original Switch use | Cannot power Switch 2 docked mode |
| Replacement BEE-005 dock | Second TV location or damaged dock | Unnecessary if only the adapter is missing |
The Bottom Line
Keep HAC-002 as a spare handheld charger, but do not use it to power a Switch 2 dock. For TV play, choose Nintendo’s NGN-01 or a carefully checked, country-approved USB-C adapter rated at least 54W, then troubleshoot HDMI, updates, and the dock before replacing the console.
