Esports can reasonably be called a sport, but there is no single definition that makes the answer universal. Organized esports share sport-like features such as competition, rules, practiced skill and training. The disagreement centers on physicality: many esports rely on coordination and fine motor control, but involve less whole-body exertion than sports that require running, jumping or throwing.
What counts as esports?
Esports are organized, competitive video gaming—not every game played for fun. The Australian Sports Commission describes formats including shooters, multiplayer online battle arenas, fighting games, real-time strategy and sports simulations. Tournaments with defined rules and opponents are central to the category; a video game does not become an esport simply because someone plays it.
Esports also cover activities with different physical demands. A seated keyboard-and-mouse match is not physically identical to a motion-based virtual sport. Treating all of these formats as one uniform activity can obscure why people disagree about the label.
Why esports fit some definitions of sport
Under a broad definition focused on organized competition and skill, esports have a strong case. Players train, develop coordination and reaction, make rapid decisions, and compete under rules. Teams, leagues, tournaments and organizing institutions add structures familiar from other sports.

The Australian Sports Commission’s overview of esports and a 2025 scholarly review of the sport-status debate describe these sport-like characteristics while recognizing that the classification remains contested.
Why the label remains disputed
Physicality is the main point of disagreement. Esports players use their hands, eyes and bodies to control play; precision, coordination and repeated practice matter. But critics distinguish these actions from the larger movements and exertion expected under narrower definitions of sport. Many popular esports are played seated and demand less gross motor activity than field, court or track sports.

So the answer depends on the definition being applied. A definition centered on structured competition and skill supports calling esports sport. One that requires substantial bodily exertion may exclude some or many conventional esports titles. The variety of games also matters: physical virtual sports can involve more overt movement than a traditional esports match.
What the Olympics’ involvement does—and does not—mean
In 2017, the IOC said competitive esports could be considered a sporting activity, while noting that IOC recognition would require compliance with Olympic Movement rules and regulations. WIPO reported the IOC’s wording: “Competitive ‘eSports’ could be considered as a sporting activity, and the players involved prepare and train with an intensity which may be comparable to athletes in traditional sports.” This was a qualified statement, not a blanket ruling that every esports title is a sport. The IOC described its 2023 Olympic Esports Series as “a global virtual and simulated sports competition,” developed with international federations and game publishers. Its activities included virtual cycling, dance, motor sport, chess and virtual taekwondo. The range illustrates both institutional engagement and the diversity of formats; it does not settle the definition for every game. IOC: Olympic Esports Series 2023.
As of the Japan Sport Council’s report on 1 April 2025, the IOC had approved plans for the first Olympic Esports Games, planned for 2027 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The report distinguished physical sports games (virtual sports), simulated sports games and traditional esports games. An IOC strategic publication also described the planned inaugural event and a 12-year partnership with the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee. So, are esports a “real” sport?
“Real” is not a separate test: it depends on what someone means by sport. Esports are clearly organized competitive activities requiring skill and training. Whether they qualify as sports under a narrower definition depends chiefly on how much physical exertion that definition requires and which game is being considered. Recognition by an institution such as the IOC is relevant, but it does not create one universal classification for every esports title.
