No. Nintendo Switch Lite plays games that support handheld mode—which Nintendo describes as the vast majority of Switch titles, without giving a percentage or count. Check a game’s supported play modes before buying: a physical game’s box or its Nintendo eShop or Nintendo.com listing will show whether handheld mode is supported.
How to check whether a game works on Switch Lite
- Physical game: Check the back of the game’s box for the handheld-mode icon.
- Digital game: Open the game’s Nintendo eShop listing and look under Supported Play Modes. Nintendo.com game-detail pages also show play modes.
- Check accessories too: If the listing indicates that a game needs extra controllers or particular features, review its compatible-accessory details. A handheld-mode listing does not necessarily mean every mode or feature works with the Lite’s built-in controls.
Nintendo explains that Lite can play any game supporting handheld mode and calls those titles the “vast majority” of the library. That is a qualitative description, not a published compatibility percentage or count. Nintendo’s compatibility FAQ and its Switch Lite page describe the rule.

What Lite’s play modes and built-in controls mean
Switch Lite supports handheld mode, but it does not support TV mode and cannot be docked to output a game to a television. Connecting a separate controller does not add TV output. Tabletop play is possible with a separate compatible stand and, for games that need them, supported wireless controllers. Lite has no built-in stand.
Lite’s built-in controls do not provide HD rumble or an IR Motion Camera. Motion controls, NFC, and wireless internet are supported, according to Nintendo’s mode, accessory, and feature compatibility FAQ. Some otherwise unavailable controller features may be supplied by separate supported wireless controllers, but that does not guarantee that every game mode or intended setup will work.

When extra controllers may help—and when they won’t
Nintendo says compatible wireless controllers, including Joy-Con, can be connected for supported games. This can make some games without handheld-mode support playable in a limited setup, but it is not a universal workaround. Check the individual game’s modes, accessories, and physical requirements before relying on extra controllers.
Nintendo UK names Super Mario Party, 1-2-Switch, and Nintendo Labo kits as examples that may be used with extra Joy-Con under restrictions. Some Labo Toy-Con builds and the Labo Vehicle Kit screen stand cannot accommodate Switch Lite as intended. These are examples, not a complete list. Nintendo’s Switch Lite guidance explains these limitations.

Separate Joy-Con need a way to charge. Nintendo’s support guidance describes using a Joy-Con Charging Grip or a standard Switch console for charging in the relevant setup. A stand may also be needed for tabletop play; Nintendo lists the Adjustable Charging Stand for Nintendo Switch and HORI Dual USB PlayStand as options. Check current product and game support before buying accessories. Neither controllers nor a stand make Lite capable of TV output.
