Yes—Final Fantasy IX is worth considering today if you want a classic fantasy JRPG and are open to a game that first released on PlayStation in 2000. Its age is part of the decision: the game’s historical acclaim and continued availability make it an easy recommendation to explore, but they cannot guarantee that its presentation or design will suit you. This spoiler-free review weighs what is established about the game against what depends on your tastes, without pretending to have tested current versions.

Is Final Fantasy IX worth playing today?

Final Fantasy IX is a JRPG, and its original PlayStation release dates to 2000; Metacritic lists November 13, 2000 as the initial release date, though regional launch dates can differ. Metacritic’s details page provides that date and genre context.

The strongest case for playing it now is straightforward: you want a classic fantasy role-playing game, rather than a contemporary action-RPG experience, and you are comfortable with a title from that era. If you are mainly looking for modern presentation or current action-RPG conventions, its age is a meaningful reason to pause. The available evidence does not establish how its pacing, combat feel, controls, or technical performance compare with newer games, so those should not be treated as tested strengths or weaknesses here.

What does its reputation tell you?

Metacritic’s PlayStation critic page reports a 94 Metascore based on 22 critic reviews. That is a historical critic snapshot for the PlayStation release—not a score for every later port, and not a prediction of whether you personally will enjoy it. See the PlayStation critic listing.

Steam’s listing says the game has sold over five million copies since its 2000 release. The listing attributes the statement to Square Enix, but does not specify when the milestone was reached, so it should be read as an undated lifetime-sales claim rather than a current sales figure. Steam’s store page also gives the PC release date as April 14, 2016 and names Square Enix as developer and publisher.

Is Final Fantasy IX a good first Final Fantasy game?

It can be a reasonable starting point if you are specifically interested in a classic fantasy JRPG. The available sources identify it as a standalone game in the series’ JRPG tradition, but they do not establish how its systems or story compare with other entries. Choose it because its era and genre appeal to you, not because a critic score or sales milestone makes it a universally ideal introduction.

Does Final Fantasy IX feel too old to play now?

That depends on your tolerance for older games. Its 2000 origin is clear, but the sources used here do not substantiate specific claims about dated controls, accessibility, pacing, or technical shortcomings. A sensible expectation is simply that this is a game from a different release era, not a newly made RPG. If you usually enjoy older console-era role-playing games, that may not be a barrier; if you expect contemporary conventions, it may be.

What platforms can you play Final Fantasy IX on?

Square Enix’s official product page displays platform marks for mobile, Steam/Windows, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. Those marks indicate platform families, not that every edition is purchasable in every country or storefront today. Check the listing for your region and device before buying.
