Is Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut Worth Buying If You’re Considering Ghost of Yōtei?

Yes—if you want Jin Sakai’s complete story, Iki Island, or Legends multiplayer. No—you do not need Director’s Cut to understand or play Ghost of Yōtei. Yōtei introduces Atsu, takes place about 300 years after Tsushima, and is explicitly described by PlayStation as “not a direct sequel.”

That makes this a content-and-price decision rather than a prerequisite decision. Buy Director’s Cut for the earlier standalone campaign and its expansions; buy Yōtei for the newer Atsu adventure on PS5. If you already own the PS4 version of Tsushima, the official PS5 upgrade is $29.99. If you have PlayStation Plus Extra, check the current Game Catalog before paying, because Director’s Cut is included but catalog access and subscription terms can change.

The decision in one minute

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut remains worthwhile alongside Ghost of Yōtei because the two games tell different stories with different protagonists and settings. Director’s Cut gives you Jin Sakai’s full Tsushima campaign, the Iki Island expansion and Legends online co-op. Yōtei follows Atsu in a story set three centuries later. Playing Tsushima can deepen your appreciation for the series’ recurring ideas about identity, violence, loyalty and myth, but none of its plot is required to follow Yōtei.

For a first-time player choosing one game, the practical split is simple:

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Choose Director’s Cut if you want the older game’s complete package, a PS4/PS5 option, Iki Island, or Legends multiplayer.
  • Choose Yōtei if you specifically want the newest PS5-only adventure and Atsu’s story.
  • Choose both if you want the series’ two eras and expect to spend substantial time with each campaign and its optional content.
  • Choose neither at full price yet if you have PlayStation Plus Extra and can access Director’s Cut through the catalog, or if you are waiting for a sale on the game you actually want to play first.

What Director’s Cut actually includes

The complete Jin Sakai campaign

Director’s Cut contains the original Ghost of Tsushima, the open-world story centered on Jin Sakai. It is a complete narrative rather than a short prologue to Yōtei. The game establishes the setting, the “ghost” concept and the series’ visual and thematic language, but Yōtei does not assume that you have seen any of it.

Iki Island

Iki Island is a separate story expansion included in Director’s Cut. It adds a new location and a continuation of Jin’s journey after the main campaign. If you are comparing the standard Tsushima release with Director’s Cut, Iki Island is the expansion that makes the latter the more complete single-player package.

Legends online co-op

Director’s Cut also includes Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, the online co-op mode. That is a meaningful inclusion if you want multiplayer missions rather than only the solo campaign. Legends is part of the package; you do not need to buy a separate Tsushima story edition to obtain it.

PS5 features

The PS5 version adds platform-specific features including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. These enhancements do not change the story or turn Tsushima into Yōtei, but they are relevant when deciding whether to buy the PS5 edition instead of playing an existing PS4 copy.

What Ghost of Yōtei is—and is not

A new protagonist and a later period

Ghost of Yōtei stars Atsu and is set about 300 years after the events of Tsushima. Sony Interactive Entertainment described it in its October 2, 2025 launch release as “a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan.” PlayStation’s product description likewise says it is “not a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima,” while describing it as an evolution of the earlier game’s design and mythos.

In practical terms, Yōtei is a new entry point. You can begin with Atsu without knowing Jin’s relationships, decisions or ending. Familiar ideas may connect the games, but the evidence supplied by PlayStation supports a thematic and historical relationship—not a required chapter order.

Yōtei editions available now

The base game launched worldwide on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Its launch MSRP was $69.99 for the Standard Edition and $79.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment. Those are launch MSRPs, not a guarantee of the price you will see today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition launched on October 1, 2026. It adds the Echoes of Sekigahara narrative expansion, the Most Wanted solo mode and Ghost of Yōtei Legends co-op content. If you are shopping after that date, compare Director’s Cut with the edition of Yōtei that contains the content you actually want; the Standard Edition and Complete Edition are not equivalent packages.

Do you need to play Tsushima before Yōtei?

No. There is no stated story prerequisite, shared protagonist or direct-sequel requirement. Yōtei’s Atsu and its later setting allow it to stand on its own. You can buy Yōtei first and return to Tsushima later without having played the games in release order.

Playing Tsushima first can still be the better order for some readers. It lets you see how the series began with Jin and gives context for the design and mythos that PlayStation says Yōtei evolves. That is optional context, not homework. If your only concern is whether you will be lost in Yōtei, the answer from the official descriptions is no.

Director’s Cut versus Yōtei

Decision point Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut Ghost of Yōtei
Story role Jin Sakai’s complete original adventure, plus Iki Island Atsu’s standalone adventure
Relationship between games Earlier setting and story Not a direct sequel; set about 300 years later
Multiplayer Legends online co-op included Complete Edition includes Ghost of Yōtei Legends co-op content
Platform PS4 and PS5 versions; a physical PS5 disc is available PlayStation 5
PS5 enhancements Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers PS5-only experience
Known launch price Current Director’s Cut store price varies and is not established here Standard Edition MSRP $69.99; Digital Deluxe MSRP $79.99 at the October 2025 launch
Subscription access Included in the PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog listing; catalog terms can change Catalog availability and pricing are not established here

The table shows why there is no universal winner. Director’s Cut offers more kinds of Tsushima content in one purchase, while Yōtei offers the newer PS5 adventure. “Newer” does not make Yōtei a replacement for Iki Island or Legends in Director’s Cut, and “complete” does not make Director’s Cut a prerequisite for Yōtei.

How much each buying route costs

If you own the PS4 game

PlayStation’s current store listing documents a $29.99 PS4-to-PS5 upgrade path. This is the clearest value route for someone who already owns the eligible PS4 release and wants the PS5 edition. Confirm the upgrade prompt on your account before purchasing, especially if your PS4 copy is physical and you use a PS5 model without a disc drive; the store determines the entitlement and hardware requirements.

If you have PlayStation Plus Extra

Director’s Cut is listed in the PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog. Check the catalog on your console or account before buying a separate copy. A catalog listing is access through a subscription, not the same thing as owning a permanent license: the game can leave the catalog, and subscription prices and terms can change.

If you want permanent ownership

Sony Direct sells a physical PS5 disc containing the expanded Director’s Cut package. For that route, look for the product labeled Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5. A disc purchase is the straightforward choice if you do not use PlayStation Plus and want a copy that is not dependent on catalog availability. Check the console’s disc-drive compatibility before ordering.

If you are buying Yōtei

Use the $69.99 Standard Edition launch MSRP and $79.99 Digital Deluxe launch MSRP as historical reference points, not as current quotations. Yōtei’s Complete Edition arrived on October 1, 2026 with additional narrative, solo and co-op content; its current price is not stated here. Compare the edition descriptions at the time of purchase so you do not pay for an expansion you do not want or miss content you expected to be included.

Which game is the better first purchase?

You have never played either game

Director’s Cut is the stronger value when your priority is breadth. One package covers Jin’s main campaign, Iki Island and Legends, and it can be played on PS4 or PS5. Pick Yōtei instead when your priority is starting with the newest PS5-only story and you have no interest in going back to Jin’s campaign.

You are buying specifically for Yōtei

Do not buy Director’s Cut out of fear that Yōtei will be incomprehensible without it. Buy it only if its own campaign, Iki Island or Legends appeals to you. The official “standalone experience” description means Yōtei can be your first purchase.

You already own Tsushima on PS4

The $29.99 upgrade makes Director’s Cut easier to justify than buying the package again at a full new-game price. Review the upgrade listing for your account, then decide whether the PS5 features and included expansion content are worth the fee to you. If your PS4 ownership does not include the edition or entitlement recognized by the store, the displayed offer may differ.

You mainly play cooperatively

Director’s Cut includes Legends, so it is the lower-risk purchase if co-op is the deciding feature and you want that mode now. Yōtei’s Complete Edition adds its own Legends co-op content, but that edition is a separate purchase and launched later than the base game. Compare the exact mode and edition descriptions rather than assuming the two Legends offerings are identical.

You want a physical copy

Choose the physical PS5 Director’s Cut disc when a permanent, disc-based copy matters more than subscription convenience. Yōtei’s platform is PS5, while Director’s Cut also has a PS4 path, so your console generation can settle the decision before story preferences do.

  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

What you gain by playing Tsushima first

The benefit is continuity of ideas, not required plot information. Tsushima gives you the original version of the series’ setting and mythos through Jin’s story. Yōtei then presents a new character and a much later historical moment. Seeing both lets you notice how the series’ design language develops across protagonists and periods.

That benefit has an opportunity cost: playing Director’s Cut first means starting with an older release before Yōtei. If you care most about experiencing the newest systems and presentation immediately, start with Yōtei and return to Tsushima when you want the earlier chapter. Neither order invalidates the other.

Common purchasing mistakes

Treating Yōtei as a sequel that requires a save file

Nothing in PlayStation’s official description establishes a prerequisite save, imported character or required Tsushima completion. Buy based on the game you want, not on assumed progression requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing Director’s Cut with the original PS4 package

The value of Director’s Cut is its bundled content: Iki Island, Legends and PS5 enhancements in addition to the main campaign. If a listing does not clearly identify the edition, verify what it includes before paying.

Assuming PS Plus access equals ownership

Catalog access is convenient, but it depends on an active subscription and continued catalog availability. A physical Director’s Cut disc is the more durable choice for readers who want a permanent copy.

Using old launch prices as current prices

The $69.99 and $79.99 Yōtei figures are launch MSRPs from 2025. Store discounts, regional pricing and the later Complete Edition can change what you see at checkout. Treat the figures as a baseline for comparing editions, not a promise of today’s price.

Buying the wrong Yōtei edition

The Complete Edition released on October 1, 2026 with Echoes of Sekigahara, Most Wanted and Yōtei Legends content. If you want those additions, confirm that the listing says Complete Edition; if you only want the base adventure, the Standard Edition may be sufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Decide whether your immediate target is Jin’s story or Atsu’s story.
  2. Check your console: Director’s Cut supports PS4 and PS5, while Yōtei is a PS5 game.
  3. If you own the PS4 Tsushima release, open the PlayStation Store listing and verify the $29.99 PS5 upgrade offer for your account.
  4. If you have PlayStation Plus Extra, search the current Game Catalog for Director’s Cut before purchasing it separately.
  5. Choose physical or digital access. For a permanent physical copy, verify the Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5 disc listing and your console’s disc-drive compatibility.
  6. For Yōtei, select Standard, Digital Deluxe or Complete Edition according to the content you want, remembering that the Complete Edition launched October 1, 2026.

Verdict

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is worth buying when you want a complete Jin Sakai package, Iki Island, Legends or a PS4/PS5 option. It is especially compelling at the documented $29.99 upgrade price or through an active PlayStation Plus Extra catalog listing. It is not a required purchase for Ghost of Yōtei: Atsu’s standalone story, 300-years-later setting and PS5-only release make Yōtei an independent starting point. If you want only the newest adventure, buy Yōtei; if you want the fullest introduction to the series’ original story and extras, buy Director’s Cut; if both descriptions appeal to you, playing both is justified because they are complementary games rather than competing versions of one story.
