No—not for a new PC player as of August 10, 2026. The official U.S. Epic Games Store listing and Rockstar Games Store listing both show Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced at $29.99. That purchase includes both GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy.
You may be able to download GTA 5 without paying again if you already own a qualifying PC copy, claimed the Epic Games giveaway in 2020, or have access through a currently active promotion. As of Monday, August 10, 2026, a new player in the United States cannot legally claim the full PC version of Grand Theft Auto V for $0 through the official Epic Games Store or Rockstar Games Store. Both storefronts currently list the PC purchase at $29.99:

Store prices and promotions can change by date and region, so the price shown on the official product page is the decisive check. A search-result headline, an old article, a social-media post, or a video claiming “GTA 5 is free” is not enough to establish that a live offer exists.

What is actually free?
Existing PC owners received GTAV Enhanced at no extra cost
On March 4, 2025, Rockstar released the newer GTAV Enhanced version for PC and made it a free upgrade for people who already owned GTAV on PC. Rockstar’s upgrade announcement distinguishes that entitlement from a free game for new customers.
In practical terms, an existing PC owner may be able to download Enhanced without paying again. Someone who owns only the PlayStation or Xbox version should not assume that the console license grants a PC copy. The PC upgrade language applies to an existing PC entitlement.
The 2020 Epic giveaway is still available only to people who claimed it
Rockstar offered GTAV Premium Edition free through the Epic Games Store from May 14, 2020, until 11 a.m. ET on May 21, 2020. Rockstar said that players who claimed the offer would retain the game in their Epic libraries after the promotion ended. The offer itself expired more than six years ago.
Therefore, “GTA V was free on Epic” is historically accurate, but “GTA V is free on Epic today” is not accurate for a new claimant based on the current listing. If you claimed the game in 2020, sign in to the Epic account used at the time and check the library before buying it again. The relevant historical announcement is Rockstar’s 2020 giveaway notice.
PC Game Pass is not a current route
GTAV Enhanced was added to PC Game Pass beginning April 15, 2025, but Xbox later announced that it would leave the catalog on April 15, 2026. As of August 10, 2026, PC Game Pass should not be recommended as a current way to access GTA 5 without buying it. It could return in the future, but no return should be assumed without a new Xbox announcement.

Why are people still saying GTA 5 is free?
Most confusion comes from combining several different events:
- The expired Epic giveaway. Articles and posts may repeat the 2020 offer without making clear that it ended on May 21, 2020.
- The free PC Enhanced upgrade. “Free upgrade” applies to people who already owned the PC game. It does not give a new PC player a free license.
- Temporary promotions and stale 2026 articles. A May 2026 article claimed that GTA V was free through an Epic Mega Sale, but the current Epic product page now shows $29.99. A headline published during a limited promotion may remain online after the offer expires.
- Confusion with Game Pass or console offers. Subscription access and console-specific trials are not the same as a permanent free PC copy.
Epic does run rotating free-game promotions. Its official free-games page is the appropriate place to check the current giveaway cycle. The August 6–13, 2026 giveaway cycle was reported as including Beacon Pines and We Were Here Together, not GTA V, by PC Gamer’s current giveaway roundup.

The Epic Games Launcher and Rockstar Games Launcher are free applications. That does not make the GTA V game license free.

- You purchased the game through an official storefront.
- You previously claimed a valid giveaway and the entitlement remains in your library.
- You already own GTAV on PC and are downloading the free Enhanced upgrade.
- You have an active, legitimate subscription entitlement during a period when the game is included.
In each case, the launcher verifies an account entitlement. A website offering an installer, “pre-activated” account, crack, torrent, key generator, or unlimited GTA$ generator is not offering the official game for free. Do not disable antivirus software, enter Epic, Steam, Rockstar, or email passwords into an unofficial site, or download an executable that bypasses a store license.
How to check whether you already own GTA 5
Before paying, check every PC storefront account you may have used:
- Epic Games Store: Open the Epic Games Launcher and inspect the Library for GTAV. The 2020 giveaway copy will be attached to the Epic account that claimed it.
- Steam: Check the Steam Library and purchase history for Grand Theft Auto V.
- Rockstar Games Launcher: Sign in with the Rockstar account used for the earlier PC purchase.
- Previous authorized purchase: Look for the original receipt or order confirmation, then sign in to the corresponding store account rather than creating a new one.
A license tied to one storefront is not automatically a license in another storefront. If you claimed GTA V on Epic, start by checking Epic; do not expect the same entitlement to appear as a Steam purchase.
If a claimed Epic copy is missing
If you know you claimed GTA V but Enhanced does not appear in Epic, Epic’s support guidance recommends this recovery sequence:
- Confirm that you are signed in to the exact Epic account that claimed or purchased GTAV.
- Reset or remove Library filters so the game is not being hidden by a view setting.
- Restart the Epic Games Launcher.
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache.
- Check whether the copy was claimed on Epic rather than purchased through Steam or Rockstar.
- Verify that the correct Epic and Rockstar accounts are linked when the game starts.
See Epic’s support instructions for existing GTAV owners. Do not purchase a second copy until you have checked the original account and resolved the library issue.
How to buy and download GTA 5 safely on PC
- Open the official Epic Games Store listing, Rockstar Games Store listing, or an authorized PC storefront such as Steam.
- Confirm that the product is Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced or the current GTAV PC product—not a Shark Card, GTA$ add-on, trial, unrelated GTA title, or third-party account.
- Check the storefront’s displayed price. As of August 10, 2026, the U.S. Epic and Rockstar listings show $29.99.
- Complete the purchase through the storefront’s official checkout.
- Install the game through the relevant launcher.
- Sign in to or create the required Rockstar Games account when prompted.
- Choose Enhanced if the PC meets its requirements. Use Legacy if Enhanced is not suitable for the hardware.
Epic lists Windows as the platform and Epic ID as a required login account. It also notes that some features require Rockstar Games account registration and/or an internet connection. The Steam listing separately identifies a required third-party Rockstar Games account and notes BattlEye anti-cheat.

GTAV Enhanced versus GTAV Legacy
The current PC purchase includes both editions. They are not simply two names for the same installation:

Rockstar states that Enhanced and Legacy players are separate in GTA Online. If friends cannot join one another, first confirm that everyone is running the same edition. A player on Enhanced generally needs to join friends using Enhanced, while a Legacy player needs to use Legacy for that shared PC population.
GTAV Enhanced PC requirements
The following specifications are the requirements listed for GTAV Enhanced, not a universal requirement for every version of GTA V. Epic warns that some integrated graphics, mobile chipsets, and other unlisted configurations may be incompatible. Legacy is included for hardware that does not meet Enhanced’s minimum requirements.

Check the complete specifications on the Epic product page before purchasing. The 105 GB figure is the listed storage requirement for Enhanced, and an SSD is required by the minimum specification.

No. GTA Online is not currently a permanently free standalone PC game. On PC, GTA Online is included with the current GTAV purchase. Epic describes the product as containing both Story Mode and GTA Online, while Rockstar’s store presents it as “Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online.”
PC players do not need a console-style Xbox or PlayStation online multiplayer subscription. They do need a valid PC game license or active service entitlement, internet access, and the required Epic, Steam, Rockstar, or other storefront account services.
Rockstar has published free-trial details for GTA Online on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Those console-specific trials should not be presented as a current free PC offer. See Rockstar’s free-trial support page for the platform qualification.
Moving from Legacy to Enhanced
Story Mode save migration
If you already own the PC game and want to move a Story Mode save from Legacy to Enhanced, Rockstar provides this process:

- Open the Pause Menu.
- Select Game → Upload Save Game.
- Choose the save and confirm the upload.
- Open GTAV Enhanced.
- From the landing page or Pause Menu, download the uploaded Story Mode save.
There are important limits. Only one Story Mode save can ultimately be migrated. You can replace the uploaded save before downloading it, and Rockstar says uploaded saves remain available for download for 90 days. Once the save has been downloaded into Enhanced, further Story Mode migrations are unavailable for that account. Follow the current instructions in Rockstar’s Story Mode migration guide.
GTA Online profile migration
In GTAV Enhanced, migrate a PC profile in either of these ways:
- From the landing page, select Online, then choose Migrate Profile.
- Open the Pause Menu and select Online → Migrate Profile.
Rockstar says this process is limited to PC-to-PC migration. Suspended, banned, or otherwise ineligible profiles may not migrate. After migration, progress does not synchronize between Legacy and Enhanced, so the two editions should not be treated as a shared, continuously updated profile. Buy now if you want a permanent PC license
The current U.S. Epic and Rockstar price is $29.99. Buying through an official storefront gives you a permanent store entitlement rather than access that depends on an ongoing subscription. The current purchase includes Enhanced, Legacy, Story Mode, and GTA Online, subject to the account and platform requirements listed by the store.

Prices and discounts vary by storefront, region, and date. The Epic page previously recorded a 50% offer ending July 30, 2026, but that sale price should not be treated as available on August 10. Check the live listing rather than relying on an archived price.
Wait if your priority is the lowest possible price
Epic and other authorized stores may run future discounts, and GTA V could potentially return to a subscription catalog. However, neither possibility makes the game free today. Waiting is a price decision, not a way to claim the current product for $0.

“The article says free, but Epic asks me to pay”
The article may be referring to the expired May 2020 giveaway, a temporary promotion, an existing-owner upgrade, a different region, or a bundle or add-on. It may also simply be wrong or outdated. Compare the offer with the official product page and check whether the product is GTAV itself rather than a Shark Card or other add-on.
“I own the console version, but the PC version is not free”
That is expected. Rockstar’s free Enhanced upgrade applies to owners of GTAV on PC. A PlayStation or Xbox license should not be assumed to transfer automatically to PC, and Rockstar’s migration documentation treats PC and console processes separately.

“Enhanced will not run on my PC”
Check the Enhanced requirements above. If your hardware does not meet them, install Legacy if it is present in your library. Enhanced and Legacy are separate GTA Online populations, so choosing Legacy may affect which friends and sessions you can join.
“My friends cannot join me”
Verify that everyone is using the same PC edition: Enhanced or Legacy. Rockstar states that players on the two editions are separated in GTA Online.
“A download site says I must disable antivirus software”
Stop. Do not use the download. Official free claims appear in an Epic, Steam, Rockstar, or other authorized storefront account and can be installed through that platform’s launcher. Avoid torrents, cracked installers, pre-activated accounts, key generators, survey download gates, GTA$ generators, and any site requesting your gaming-account credentials outside the official login page.

As of August 10, 2026, GTA 5 is not free to download for a new PC player in the United States. The official Epic Games Store and Rockstar Games Store listings show $29.99. Is GTA 5 free on Epic Games today?
