In a December 19, 2022 post reproduced by GamesRadar+, YouTube creator Richter Overtime asked: “Did you know?"corpse01.mdl" from Half-Life 2 and GMod is textured using real photos of a dead, burnt body”. That is the creator’s claim, not an official statement from Valve. GamesRadar+ reported on the comparison, while Insider Gaming covered the claim.
What is confirmed—and what is not?
The reporting supports that fans noticed a visual resemblance and circulated the real-photo explanation. It does not prove the texture’s source. A likeness between two images is not, by itself, evidence that one was directly copied into the game.

GamesRadar+ explicitly characterized the specific identification as technically unconfirmed. Community documentation on Combine OverWiki’s list of citizen models likewise says the cadaver image’s origin is unknown. Do not treat the claim as settled fact.
Was the image from a medical textbook, and who is depicted?
The sources reviewed do not verify a textbook, the identity of any person depicted, the photographer, or the image’s rights holder. Naming any of them would go beyond the available evidence.

Does the model appear in Garry’s Mod, and was it replaced?
December 2022 coverage reported that the model also appears in Garry’s Mod and that a fan-made replacement mod had been made. GIGAZINE’s report also mentioned an inquiry to Valve, but its note that Valve had not responded describes the situation at the time of publication—not Valve’s current position. The available reporting does not establish whether a particular replacement is still available or compatible, so it is not a reliable basis for installation advice.

The sources support the more careful description: fans believe the Half-Life 2 corpse texture resembles a real forensic photograph, but the specific match and production history remain unconfirmed.
