There is no confirmed answer from Valve. A December 16, 2025 report said that sources Mike Straw had spoken with believed Half-Life 3 was intended to launch alongside the Steam Machine, with spring 2026 named as the expected window. That window has passed, and the report was not a Valve announcement.
What did the report claim?
Ars Technica reported on December 16, 2025, that Mike Straw, senior editor of Insider Gaming, said sources he had spoken with remained adamant that Half-Life 3 was meant to be a Steam Machine launch title. Straw attributed a spring 2026 window to what he had been told. Ars Technica’s report presents this as Straw’s sourcing—not as information confirmed by Valve.
Straw put the claim this way: “everybody I’ve talked to are still adamant [Half-Life 3] is a game that will be a launch title with the Steam Machine.” The statement describes what his sources reportedly believed; it does not establish that Valve had finalized or announced a release plan.
How reliable was the timing?
The date caveat matters. Ars also quoted Straw saying: “I had been told a date. I was not going to report that date because they weren’t 100 percent confident in that date,” referring to earlier information about possible announcement or release timing. Ars noted that some of his earlier date information was not reliable enough to report in detail. That context makes the spring 2026 window a reported expectation, not a dependable schedule.

Has Half-Life 3 launched with the Steam Machine?
The reported spring 2026 window has passed. The available material does not establish that Half-Life 3 launched with the Steam Machine, nor does it establish a Valve confirmation or denial of the alleged connection. A Steam-hosted announcement reported a 2026 window for the Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Steam Controller, but it did not mention Half-Life 3 or confirm the hardware’s current availability. The hardware announcement is not evidence that the game was part of the launch.

Valve’s Steam publisher catalog identifies Half-Life as a Valve franchise and lists Half-Life: Alyx, released March 23, 2020. Valve describes Alyx as a virtual-reality return to the series set between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. That establishes the franchise context, but says nothing about Half-Life 3 or its release timing. Valve’s Steam catalog does not substantiate the launch-title rumor.

What to take away
- The launch-title claim was reported by Ars as Mike Straw’s account of what his sources believed.
- Spring 2026 was the reported target window, not a Valve-confirmed release date.
- Because that window has passed, the original timing should not be treated as a current forecast; the cited material leaves the game’s status unresolved.
