The foldable handheld GameCube that circulated as a fake concept in 2005 was never a Nintendo product. In 2022, console modder GingerOfOz built a working custom handheld inspired by that design—but it runs on Wii hardware, not a GameCube motherboard, and its front disc slot is only decorative.
What was the fake handheld GameCube?
The original image showed a clamshell portable styled like a GameCube, complete with a front disc slot and buttons modeled on the home console’s controller. The render dates to 2005; it was a concept, not an official Nintendo prototype or released device. Yanko Design’s account of the design explains the practical problem: a disc drive and full-size controller-style controls would make a genuinely portable version difficult to fit into the proposed form.
How did GingerOfOz make the concept work?
In 2022, GingerOfOz (formerly known as GingerOfMods) made a working handheld inspired by the render. Rather than trying to shrink an original GameCube motherboard, the build uses Wii internals. HotHardware describes the Wii board as smaller and lower-power, and notes that Wii hardware is mostly backward compatible with GameCube games. The project combines those internals with a custom 3D-printed shell and software intended to evoke the GameCube experience. Can you play GameCube games on this handheld?
Yes, the build is designed to run GameCube games through its Wii-based hardware. But it does not play original GameCube discs: the visible front slot is cosmetic, and the handheld has no optical drive. HotHardware reports that a modded Wii can load GameCube games from other storage media when the user has a legitimate digital backup. The project does not include game files, and this should not be mistaken for disc support. HotHardware covers the storage approach.

Is the portable GameCube for sale, or can you build one?
This is a custom maker project, not a retail handheld or an announced product. The coverage does not provide a complete parts list, a tested step-by-step tutorial, or a price. MobileSyrup links to GingerOfOz’s video documenting the build, which is the best starting point for seeing the project itself; the available reporting alone is not a verified build guide. MobileSyrup’s report and video link provide that reference.
The custom 3D-printed shell makes a 3D printer a plausible tool for someone exploring a similar fabrication project, but the coverage does not identify a printer model or establish that a kit or ready-to-print package is available. A similar build would also involve adapting console hardware and custom electronics; the documented coverage is not enough to specify parts or promise a repeatable result.

What makes this more than a replica?
The achievement is not that Nintendo’s old concept suddenly became a commercial GameCube portable. It is that a modder turned the visual idea into a functioning custom handheld by changing the underlying hardware approach: Wii internals provide the GameCube compatibility, while the custom shell and software recreate the look and feel. That distinction matters if you are searching for a “GameCube Advance” or asking whether the old fake portable is real. The design became real as a one-off mod, not as an original-hardware Nintendo handheld.
