No—Half-Life 3 has not been officially confirmed, and the available evidence does not show that a Valve announcement is imminent. As of October 8, 2026, Valve has not confirmed a game called Half-Life 3 or HLX, nor announced a trailer, release date, platforms, or gameplay. Recent claims remain rumors, and one widely reported prediction that the game would launch with the Steam Machine in spring 2026 did not come true.
Is Half-Life 3 confirmed?
No. The reporting available through October 8, 2026 establishes no official Valve announcement of Half-Life 3. Digital Citizen reported in June 2026 that Valve had not confirmed the rumored codename HLX or its connection to Half-Life 3, and that there was no official trailer, release date, platform list, or gameplay footage (Digital Citizen).

That distinction matters: third-party reports can document rumors, but they do not confirm a Valve project. At present, there is no announced game whose edition, platforms, or launch date can be compared.
Is an announcement imminent?
There is no verified evidence that an announcement is imminent. The strongest recent predictions have either lacked a firm date or failed to match what happened. A claim that Half-Life 3 would launch alongside Valve’s Steam Machine in spring 2026 was an attributed rumor, not a Valve announcement; by June 22, DSOGaming reported that Valve had not announced a new Half-Life game with the hardware and that Half-Life 3 was not a launch title (DSOGaming).

The Steam Machine launch prediction
In December 2025, Ars Technica reported Mike Straw’s account that anonymous sources were “still adamant” about a spring 2026 launch window. The article also cautioned that Straw’s previous date information had not been reliable enough to report as a firm date and that Valve’s plans could change (Ars Technica). The predicted window passed without the reported launch or an official announcement.
The “nearly complete” claim
In July 2026, ComicBook.com covered Tyler McVicker’s claim that the game was nearly complete. The report supplied no reveal or release date and noted that similar claims had appeared before without an announcement (ComicBook.com). “Nearly complete” is therefore a commentator’s claim about an unconfirmed project, not an independently verified development update from Valve.

What the HLX and datamining clues do—and do not—show
HLX is a rumored codename, not a title Valve has confirmed as Half-Life 3. Digital Citizen’s June 26, 2026 report described ongoing speculation but said Valve had not confirmed either the codename or its connection to the series (Digital Citizen).
A Dota 2 code message also fueled speculation. Notebookcheck, writing about the clue on June 20 and updating its article October 5, 2026, characterized the variable name as a jab at dataminers and reported no comparable indication that the rumored shooter was ready for an official announcement (Notebookcheck). A code string can inspire a theory; on its own, it cannot establish what a project is or when Valve might reveal it.

How the current rumors compare with confirmation
| Claim or evidence | What is established |
|---|---|
| Valve has announced Half-Life 3 | No official announcement is established in the reporting available through October 8, 2026. |
| Half-Life 3 would launch with the Steam Machine in spring 2026 | A prediction attributed to Mike Straw’s anonymous sources; the reported window passed without the launch or announcement. |
| HLX is Half-Life 3 | Unconfirmed. Valve has not confirmed the codename or its connection to the series. |
| A Dota 2 code clue means an announcement is close | Not established. Notebookcheck described the clue as a joke at dataminers’ expense and reported no similar signal of an imminent announcement. |
| The game is nearly complete | A claim attributed to Tyler McVicker; no reveal or release date was given, and Valve has not verified the status. |
Why Half-Life 3 rumors keep returning
Speculation has persisted for years because the series left an unresolved expectation behind. A Steam-hosted retrospective recounts years of hoaxes and leaks following Valve’s official 2006 announcement of Half-Life 2: Episode 3. It also reproduces an anonymous Valve developer’s 2017 statement that Valve had never announced Half-Life 3; the speaker distinguished the promised three-episode plan after Half-Life 2, of which only two episodes arrived, from an announced full sequel (Steam retrospective).
Former Valve writer Chet Faliszek has also warned against treating his comments as a hint. In May 2026, he said, “This is not saying that something’s happening, not trying to allude to anything” (PC Gamer).

What would count as real confirmation?
For now, the useful dividing line is straightforward: look for a direct announcement from Valve, rather than an anonymous-source forecast, datamined clue, or outside claim about development status. Until Valve identifies a game and provides concrete details, Half-Life 3’s title, release timing, platforms, and gameplay remain unconfirmed.
