Half-Life 3 was not announced at The Game Awards 2025. Fans had spent weeks reading hardware news, anniversary posts and social-media activity as possible clues, but none established that Valve planned a reveal at the show. After it passed, frustration and gallows humor followed.
What happened at The Game Awards 2025?
The show ended without a Half-Life 3 announcement, as post-show reports from DSOGaming and GameStar recounted. The gap between expectation and outcome was fueled by a rumor cycle, not by a confirmed Valve announcement plan.

Why did fans expect Half-Life 3?
Valve’s real announcement was hardware
In November, reports of a major Valve announcement added momentum to Half-Life speculation. What Valve revealed was hardware: the Steam Controller, Steam Machine and Steam Frame, according to DSOGaming and GameStar. The reveal was real; the expectation that it meant Half-Life 3 was not established.
An anniversary post looked like a clue
The Game Awards posted about the original Half-Life on its anniversary, and some fans interpreted the timing as a hint. But, as GameSpot reported, the organization had made a similar anniversary post every year. On its own, that post did not signal a new game reveal.
#1 Best Overall
- New weapons; new levels; solve a variety of puzzles; first-person shooter
A wishlist image sparked more theories
Geoff Keighley’s Steam wishlist image and a googly-eyes emoji reply also fed speculation. PC Gamer reported that Keighley later said the only game on his wishlist was Dadlympics. The social-media exchange was not confirmation that Half-Life 3 was coming to the show.
What did the pre-show predictions actually say?
The headline claim that “every leaker warned them” overstates what the available reporting supports. GameStar said journalist Mike Straw had reiterated a prediction that Half-Life 3 would be announced before the end of 2025 and released in early 2026, while noting the claim could not be substantiated. That was a prediction about a possible year-end announcement, not proof of a guaranteed slot at The Game Awards.
Rank #2
- Amazing new graphics with pre-rendered cutscenes that look like they came from the movies
- More realistic physics - Objects have varied and appropriate mass, density and physical properties
- Incredibly advanced AI as enemies adapt, plan, improvise, and respond
- Hordes of new aliens and other enemies, plus a plethora of new guns and weapons
PC Gamer columnist Andy Chalk captured the uncertainty in a November 19, 2025 article: “Whatever’s going on, one thing is for sure: Nobody knows what’s going on.” That was his assessment of the rumor situation, not a statement from Valve or Keighley. None of the clues cited above amounted to an official confirmation.
How did fans react to the no-show?
GameStar described frustration mixed with gallows humor, a familiar way for fans to respond to hopes around the long-awaited sequel. One Reddit user put the disappointment this way: “Can’t describe the misery I felt staying up to see no half life 3 at the game awards today”. That post is an individual reaction, not a measure of how the wider fan community felt.

Does the no-show tell us when Half-Life 3 will be announced?
No. The show’s ending without an announcement only confirms that Half-Life 3 was not revealed there. The pre-show predictions and fan-interpreted clues do not establish a later announcement date, and the cited coverage offers no reliable basis for forecasting one.
