Is Halo Still Being Made? The 2026 Game Status Explained

No—Halo did not stop making games. Halo Studios has described multiple projects in development, announced Halo: Campaign Evolved, and Xbox said in September 2026 that Activision is assembling a purpose-built team for another next Halo title. The end of planned major Halo Infinite updates is a narrower live-service decision, not the end of the franchise.

What “Halo stopped making games” can mean

The confusion comes from treating three different things as one. A studio can reduce major updates for an existing game while starting new games; a company can move development to a different internal team; and an announced project can still be months away from release. Halo’s recent announcements involve all three situations.

Question What the available announcements establish
Are new Halo games in development? Yes. Halo Studios said in October 2024 that multiple projects were in development.
Was a specific new game announced? Yes. Halo: Campaign Evolved is a ground-up remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign.
Did Halo Infinite receive a final major update plan? Halo Studios called Operation: Infinite the last major content update then planned, while also describing continued support and work on multiple projects.
Who is developing the next Halo title mentioned in the latest Xbox update? Xbox said Activision will develop it with a purpose-built team. A small Halo Studios team will continue supporting the community and games already in market.

Those answers are compatible. “Fewer large updates for Infinite” does not equal “no new Halo development,” and “a different team is assigned to a future title” does not equal “Halo Studios has closed.”

What changed at Halo Studios in 2024

343 Industries became Halo Studios

In October 2024, 343 Industries adopted the Halo Studios name. The announcement presented the change as the beginning of a new development chapter rather than a shutdown. It also said future Halo projects would use Unreal Engine 5 instead of the studio’s previous technology direction.

Studio head Pierre Hintze described the moment with the line, “So, we start a new chapter today.” That wording matters: the announcement framed the rebrand and engine change around future production, not the end of game development.

“Multiple projects” does not mean every project was revealed

Halo Studios said more than one project was in development but did not publish a complete list, release calendar, or final count. “Multiple” should therefore be read literally: it confirms several active efforts without proving how many games will ship, when each will launch, or whether every project will be announced.

One public demonstration, Project Foundry, also needs careful interpretation. Halo Studios presented Foundry as a research and development training tool used to explore what future Halo work could look like in Unreal Engine 5. It was not announced as a standalone game. Calling it a released title, a numbered sequel, or a guaranteed product would go beyond what the studio said.

Why the end of planned major Halo Infinite updates is not the end of Halo

Halo Studios said Operation: Infinite was the last major content update then planned for Halo Infinite. The statement also expressed continued commitment to supporting Infinite and explained that the team needed to focus on multiple projects in development.

“Last major update then planned” is deliberately narrower than “the servers are shutting down” or “all support has ended.” A major content update can involve a large season, substantial systems, or a broad feature package. It does not describe every maintenance action, community communication, technical fix, or future decision. The announcement did not establish that all Infinite support ceased.

Event What it tells you What it does not tell you
Operation: Infinite identified as the last major update then planned The near-term cadence of large content additions was being reduced or concluded. That the Halo franchise ended, that all online services stopped, or that no new Halo game was being built.
Multiple projects announced Development resources were being directed toward more than one Halo effort. The final number, names, launch dates, or platforms for every project.
Continued support for Infinite stated The studio still intended to support the game and its community at that point. A guarantee of a particular future update, season, feature, or service lifetime.

This distinction also explains why a player might see fewer headline-making Infinite announcements while Halo development continues elsewhere. A live game’s content schedule and a publisher’s pipeline of new games are related resource decisions, but they are not the same product.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is the clearest announced new game

A full remake, not a simple port

Halo Studios announced Halo: Campaign Evolved as a ground-up remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign. The description includes new missions and expanded gameplay, so the project is intended to rebuild the campaign rather than merely increase the resolution of the 2001 release.

That makes it a particularly direct answer to anyone asking whether Halo is still being made: there is a named, publicly described game with a defined relationship to a classic Halo campaign. It is not evidence that every other project mentioned in 2024 has the same scope or schedule.

Announced date and platforms

Item Announcement detail Qualification
Release date July 28, 2026 This was the date listed in the official story reveal; confirm the current status before making a purchase or planning a launch event.
Early access Begins July 23, 2026 Early access can depend on edition and regional terms, so check the current product listing.
Platforms Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Steam Platform availability and store listings can change by region or edition.
Formats Physical and digital editions were listed Exact contents, retailers, and regional stock should be verified on the official page.

Because the announced July 28, 2026 date has now passed, readers should treat the date as the published launch schedule and check the official Halo or platform store page for the current release state, edition contents, patches, and regional availability. The available announcement alone does not establish a retailer’s present stock or whether an edition has changed.

Who is making the next Halo game?

Xbox’s September 2026 update described another organizational step: Activision will develop the next Halo title with a purpose-built team. The same update said a small team at Halo Studios would continue supporting the Halo community and games already in market.

This means Halo development is distributed across teams rather than tied to one permanent studio assignment. It is accurate to say that work continues across Halo Studios and the newly identified Activision team. It is not accurate to assume that Activision is responsible for every project, that Halo Studios has no development role at all, or that every future Halo title has been assigned publicly.

The update also separates two responsibilities that are often blended in headlines:

A concise Halo development timeline

Date Announcement Why it matters
October 2024 343 Industries adopted the Halo Studios name and announced Unreal Engine 5 for future projects. The studio publicly described a new production chapter.
October 2024 Halo Studios said multiple projects were in development. Development continued beyond Halo Infinite’s existing content cycle.
October 2024 Project Foundry was shown as research and development work. It demonstrated technology and training work, not a separately announced game.
2024 update on Infinite Operation: Infinite was called the last major content update then planned. A live-service milestone was addressed, not the whole franchise.
July 23, 2026 Early access for Halo: Campaign Evolved was scheduled to begin. The remake’s early-access timing was announced for eligible editions.
July 28, 2026 Halo: Campaign Evolved was scheduled for release. The remake received a concrete date and three announced platforms.
September 2026 Xbox said Activision would develop the next Halo title with a purpose-built team. The latest organizational update identified another development group while retaining Halo Studios support staff.

How to read future Halo headlines without being misled

Look for the type of announcement

A headline about a season, operation, or major update concerns an existing game. A headline naming a new project, remake, sequel, or campaign concerns game development. A staffing announcement concerns who is doing the work. These categories can appear close together but answer different questions.

Separate confirmation from expectation

  • Confirmed: Halo Studios announced multiple projects, Campaign Evolved, and its Unreal Engine 5 direction.
  • Confirmed in September 2026: Xbox identified Activision’s purpose-built team for the next Halo title and a small Halo Studios support team.
  • Not established: the final number of unrevealed projects, their names, release windows, gameplay formats, or a complete allocation of every project among studios.

Check the date and platform before acting

Release dates, early-access rules, store pages, edition contents, and regional availability are time-sensitive. For Campaign Evolved, verify the current official listing before buying, selecting a platform, or assuming that a physical edition or early-access entitlement is available in your country.

What this means for different players

If you play Halo Infinite

You should distinguish the end of planned major content updates from the status of the game’s services. The announcement did not say that all support stopped. Check current in-game notices and official service information for present-day maintenance or event details rather than inferring them from the old major-update statement.

If you want a new campaign

Halo: Campaign Evolved is the announced remake to watch. Its listed platforms are Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Steam, and its stated scope includes the original campaign rebuilt with new missions and expanded gameplay. Confirm the live store listing and edition before purchase because the published schedule is not a substitute for current regional availability.

If you are waiting for an entirely new setting or sequel

The public announcements do not provide enough information to name, date, or describe every other project. Halo Studios’ “multiple projects” statement proves an active pipeline, while the September 2026 Xbox update identifies a team for the next Halo title without supplying a complete product slate. Waiting for an official title, platform list, and release window is the only reliable way to answer those narrower questions.

The bottom line on Halo’s future

Halo’s production did not stop. The franchise moved into a reorganized phase: Halo Studios changed its name and engine direction, Halo: Campaign Evolved became a specific announced remake, Xbox assigned the next Halo title to a purpose-built Activision team in its September 2026 update, and a smaller Halo Studios group continued supporting existing games and players. Halo Infinite’s planned major-update endpoint describes one game’s content strategy, not the disappearance of Halo games.
