It can be a good portable co-op game if you have a reliable internet connection and accept performance compromises and occasional troubleshooting; it is not a guaranteed plug-and-play experience.
What does the Steam Deck rating mean?
Steam’s current listing marks HELLDIVERS 2 as Playable. Valve uses that category for games that work but may require manual adjustments or have limitations; Verified means a game meets Valve’s criteria for working well out of the box. Unsupported and Unknown are separate ratings. The badge is not a frame-rate guarantee, and it can change after game, SteamOS, or Proton updates. Check the live Steam listing and Valve’s compatibility definitions before buying.
How well does it run on Steam Deck?
The PC release runs on SteamOS through Proton rather than as a native Linux game. Performance varies with the game build, settings, and what is happening on screen. Large battles, explosions, and particle-heavy scenes can be more demanding than quieter moments, so a single frame-rate claim would not describe every mission or Deck configuration.
Arrowhead has continued to publish rendering and performance work: its February 2026 update included shader-rendering optimizations, and its June 1, 2026 patch included performance improvements. Its known-issues page still describes performance, crash, and connectivity issues as areas of ongoing work. Those updates are not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution, or battery life on Deck.

Does online multiplayer work?
Online co-op is supported, with squads of up to four players, and cross-play lets PC players join players on other supported platforms. An internet connection is required, so this is not an offline game for flights or places without reliable Wi-Fi. Steam players do not need PlayStation Plus, but the Steam listing requires a linked PlayStation Network account. See the Arrowhead FAQ for its current account and multiplayer details.
Cross-play is not the same as cross-progression. Arrowhead’s support page, dated July 30, 2026, says cross-progression is unavailable; account linking does not transfer game progress between platforms. Check the current cross-progression support page for changes.

Is the anti-cheat compatible?
Steam identifies HELLDIVERS 2 as using nProtect GameGuard, a kernel-level anti-cheat. The game’s current Playable rating means it is not simply classified as nonfunctional on Deck, but the combination of anti-cheat and Proton can make compatibility more sensitive to updates than a native SteamOS game. Neither the rating nor the current status guarantees that every future update will launch without problems.
What about controls, screen size, and storage?
The game is a third-person shooter designed for controller use, and the Deck’s built-in controls are central to playing it. However, Playable is not a promise that every menu, social feature, account-linking screen, or text element is ideal on a small display. Be prepared to use the touch screen or adjust controls if a menu is awkward.

Steam’s system-requirements section currently shows conflicting available-space figures: 135 GB under minimum requirements and 40 GB under recommended requirements, and recommends an SSD. Check the live listing before installing, and leave extra free space for updates and temporary installation data. The listing does not establish a separate storage requirement for Deck.
How to check compatibility and try the game
- Open the Steam store page and confirm the current Steam Deck badge and storage information.
- On your Deck, install the game from Steam and launch it while connected to the internet.
- Complete any required PlayStation Network account linking, then try a mission and check whether the controls and performance suit you.
What to do if it stops launching
Start with the standard Steam and support steps rather than assuming a particular Proton version is a permanent fix:

- Install available SteamOS and game updates, then restart the Deck.
- In Steam, open Library → HELLDIVERS 2 → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- If the problem began after an update, check Arrowhead’s known issues and latest patch notes.
- If it persists, use Arrowhead’s troubleshooting guidance or contact its support team. Some instructions there are Windows-specific, so do not treat them as Deck-specific procedures.
For experienced users, Steam’s Properties → Compatibility → Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool option allows testing another compatibility tool. Proton Experimental or Hotfix may be worth trying when current reports or support guidance recommend them, but no particular version is established as a lasting official fix. A change that gets past startup can also introduce instability or worse performance.

If image quality, consistently high performance, or upgradeability matters most, a gaming PC is a better fit. A PS5 is another supported platform for players who prefer a console setup. Do not buy a Deck solely for this one demanding online game if you expect console-like performance without compromises.
