Yes—but only in a carefully limited sense. Dragonsteel’s official campaign presents Hoid’s Storybook Collection as stories Hoid tells inside the Cosmere, and several books expand or illustrate stories that already appear in The Stormlight Archive. That makes the collection an officially framed part of the Cosmere’s fiction. It does not, by itself, establish that every event or detail in every fable is literal, objective history.
The distinction matters because Hoid is an unreliable, purposeful storyteller. The books are best read as in-world tales that reveal character, themes and possible context—not as a reference manual that settles every mystery about Roshar or Hoid himself. The primary descriptions and current campaign information are on Dragonsteel’s official campaign page.

What is Hoid’s Storybook Collection?
The collection is a set of four illustrated hardcover storybooks associated with Hoid, the wandering storyteller who appears across Brandon Sanderson’s connected Cosmere. Dragonsteel’s campaign describes the books as fables Hoid chooses to tell in order to provoke questions in his listeners. They are not four unrelated children’s books written outside the setting; their premise and several of their stories are rooted in scenes, legends and characters from Cosmere fiction.
Sanderson describes the intent this way: “At their core, these are stories Hoid chose to tell to provoke questions in the listener, regardless of their age.” That wording establishes the narrative frame while leaving room for the normal uncertainty of a story told by a character with his own purposes.

The four books at a glance
| Book | Connection to earlier material | In-world role and emphasis | Presentation described by the campaign |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Dog and the Dragon | Written after Sanderson created the story for Rhythm of War | Hoid’s fable about a dog who wants to become a dragon; growth and acceptance | A classic children’s-book feel |
| Wandersail | Illustrated retelling of the tale Hoid shares with Kaladin in The Way of Kings | A story involving Wit, the Bridgeman, Derethil and responsibility at the edge of the world | A more graphic, collector-oriented treatment |
| The Girl Who Looked Up | A Rosharan folk story first told by Shallan and expanded for the collection | A tale about curiosity, seeking answers and what happens when someone looks beyond accepted limits | An individual visual approach chosen for the story |
| The ChasmFriends Get a Pet | Characters introduced in Dragonsteel Nexus 2024’s Story Deck | An illustrated story extending that separate Dragonsteel introduction | The campaign gives it its own illustrated-book presentation |
The campaign’s descriptions make clear that the books do not all have the same relationship to the novels. Two grow directly out of Stormlight scenes, one is a Rosharan folk tale, and one comes from a Dragonsteel product outside the main novels. Their different visual treatments are part of the concept rather than evidence that some are “more canon” than others.
Is Hoid’s Storybook Collection canon?
Calling the collection Cosmere canon is supportable when you mean its official setting and narrative framing: Dragonsteel identifies these as tales Hoid tells, and the campaign deliberately connects several of them to published Stormlight material. They belong to the official body of Cosmere-related fiction and provide authorized context for moments readers have already encountered.
That conclusion is narrower than saying every sentence in each fable records a historical event exactly as it happened. The official campaign material reviewed for the collection does not make a blanket statement that all four stories are literal documentary accounts. Hoid may simplify, embellish, choose metaphors or tell a story because it will affect a particular listener. The safest description is therefore “canon stories within the Cosmere,” not “four infallible historical records of the Cosmere.”

Three meanings of “canon” that should not be confused
- Publication canon: Dragonsteel officially published or presented the books as Cosmere-related works.
- In-world framing: The stories are presented as things Hoid tells, or as tales that exist in the setting, rather than as an outside narrator’s encyclopedia entries.
- Literal history: Every narrated detail happened exactly as described, with no distortion or artistic license. The cited campaign copy does not confirm this broadest claim.
This distinction also explains why a fable can be canon without being factually reliable in every detail. The act of Hoid telling a story is itself part of the fictional record; the truth of the story’s internal events can remain a question for readers.

Are Hoid’s stories real in the Cosmere?
They are real as stories being told in the setting. Whether each tale is “real” as a literal account depends on the individual book and on what the surrounding novels establish. Wandersail, for example, is explicitly tied to the story Hoid tells Kaladin. The Girl Who Looked Up is identified as a Rosharan folk story first told by Shallan. Those connections confirm that the tales exist in Rosharan narrative culture; they do not turn every image or lesson into a verified historical report.
The Dog and the Dragon began as material Sanderson wrote for Rhythm of War, so its place in the Stormlight reading experience is direct. Its dragon and dog imagery functions as a fable about change and acceptance. Readers can analyze what the story means to its listener without assuming that a literal dog elsewhere in the Cosmere transformed into a dragon.
The ChasmFriends Get a Pet has a different origin: its characters were introduced through Dragonsteel Nexus 2024’s Story Deck. The book extends that material in an illustrated story, so its continuity is best understood through that product’s fictional context rather than through a claim that it documents a major historical event in a novel.

The Way of Kings and Wandersail
Hoid shares the tale that becomes Wandersail with Kaladin in The Way of Kings. The story’s framing invokes Wit, the Bridgeman, Derethil and a dangerous edge of the world. Its purpose is not simply to transfer setting facts. In Hoid’s own formulation, “The purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon. Too often, we forget that.” The illustrated book gives that previously embedded tale room to stand on its own while preserving its connection to Kaladin’s experience.
Oathbringer and The Girl Who Looked Up
The Girl Who Looked Up comes from a Rosharan folk story Shallan tells. The collection expands the story beyond its appearances in Stormlight, allowing readers to examine its images and themes without treating it as a detached fairy tale from another universe. Its emphasis on curiosity and the search for answers also suits the way stories in Stormlight preserve cultural memory while changing as they are retold.
Rhythm of War and The Dog and the Dragon
Sanderson wrote “The Dog and the Dragon” for Rhythm of War. The collection turns that novel-origin story into a complete illustrated book, retaining its role as a fable about growth and acceptance. Readers who know the scene in Rhythm of War will recognize the immediate context; readers who encounter the picture book first can still understand its basic lesson without possessing a map of the entire Cosmere.
The Story Deck connection
The ChasmFriends Get a Pet is linked to the characters introduced in Dragonsteel Nexus 2024’s Story Deck. This makes it part of the wider ecosystem of Cosmere-related and Dragonsteel-published storytelling, but it is not presented as a Stormlight chapter or as a substitute for one.

Do you need to read Stormlight first?
No. Sanderson’s official Cosmere guidance says readers can enjoy an individual series without knowing every cross-series connection. The connections become more significant as you read further, but complete Cosmere preparation is not a requirement for opening these books.
For the clearest context, use this practical order:
- Read The Way of Kings if you want the scene and character relationship behind Wandersail.
- Read Oathbringer for the broader Stormlight context surrounding Shallan’s folk tale, including The Girl Who Looked Up.
- Read Rhythm of War to encounter the original appearance of “The Dog and the Dragon.”
- Read the storybooks in any order once you understand that they are expanded, illustrated tales rather than required Stormlight chapters.
If you want short fiction from several Cosmere worlds, Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection is an optional companion. Sanderson’s catalog describes it as a collection of nine works with essays and illustrations about the represented planetary systems, including the Stormlight novella Edgedancer. It is not part of Hoid’s four-book storybook set and is not a prerequisite.

| Name | What it includes | Format and role |
|---|---|---|
| Hoid’s Storybook Collection | The Dog and the Dragon, Wandersail, The Girl Who Looked Up, and The ChasmFriends Get a Pet | Four illustrated storybooks, framed as tales Hoid tells or as stories rooted in Cosmere culture |
| Hoid’s Travails | Novels including Tress of the Emerald Sea, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and the further entry The Fires of December | A campaign label for a novel series connected to Hoid’s voice and role, not a picture-book set |
Both groups use Hoid as a narrative connection, but they should not be merged in reading lists, bibliographies or canon explanations. The storybooks are short, illustrated fables; Hoid’s Travails refers to full-length Cosmere novels.
What do the format and campaign details tell readers?
The campaign describes all four storybooks as hardcovers. Eligible backers receive PDFs through BackerKit, and the campaign FAQ says the picture books are not available as audiobooks. Special campaign editions and later store editions can differ, so current inventory, shipping and retailer availability should be checked against the latest Dragonsteel listing rather than assumed from the original pledge page.
The campaign ended on March 29, 2026, with 80,540 backers and $11,959,500 raised, according to Dragonsteel/BackerKit’s campaign figures. Those numbers describe the success of the crowdfunding campaign; they are not evidence that the stories are canon. The page listed an estimated October 1, 2026 ship date, which was a forecast and should not be treated as confirmation that every order was delivered.
How should you interpret Hoid while reading?
Keep Hoid’s motives and identity separate from the status of the storybooks. Sanderson’s official Hoid FAQ says: “Hoid is a mystery which I cannot speak on other than what has been written in the text of the novels.” It adds that much is intended for readers to piece together. That is an instruction to treat theories about Hoid’s full identity, motives or ultimate role as theories unless a novel or direct author statement establishes them.
The same caution applies to interpretations of the fables. A recurring image can illuminate a character’s emotional state, echo a larger Cosmere theme or conceal information without functioning as a literal timeline entry. Read for what the story does in its scene, then separate confirmed continuity from inference.
A reliable way to discuss the collection’s canon status
- Say that Dragonsteel officially presents the four books as Hoid’s stories or as stories connected to Cosmere cultures.
- Name the specific novel, folk-tale or Story Deck connection instead of treating all four books as one type of source.
- Describe expanded material as added context and interpretation, not automatically as newly verified history.
- Mark claims about Hoid’s identity, hidden agenda or the literal truth of a fable as interpretation unless the novels establish them.
- Keep the picture books distinct from Hoid’s Travails and from optional collections such as Arcanum Unbounded.
On that evidence, the most accurate verdict is straightforward: Hoid’s Storybook Collection is official Cosmere fiction and canon in its setting and framing, while the literal truth of every narrated detail remains deliberately open.
