Is It Safe to Remove rpcbind on a Linux Server?

Removing rpcbind is safe only after you verify that the server is NFSv4-only and has no NIS or other ONC RPC consumers. Follow a reversible mask-and-test procedure before considering package removal.

Do not remove rpcbind blindly. It is generally safe to stop, mask, or uninstall it only after you have proved that the server has no RPC consumers. The clearest safe case is a genuinely NFSv4-only server or client with no NIS or other ONC RPC workload. For a cautious change, mask the systemd service and socket first, observe the host through a maintenance window, and remove the package only after the workload and rollback plan have been validated.

What rpcbind does

rpcbind is the directory service for ONC (Open Network Computing) RPC. It maps an RPC program number to the network address where that program is listening. A client does not necessarily know which port provides a particular RPC program, so it first asks rpcbind and then sends requests to the returned address. The Linux man-pages rpcbind(8) manual describes this as: “When a client wishes to make an RPC call to a given program number, it first contacts rpcbind on the server machine to determine the address where RPC requests should be sent.”

That makes rpcbind a service-discovery component, not NFS itself. It normally listens on TCP and UDP port 111, although the RPC services it discovers use additional ports. The manual also says rpcbind should be started before other RPC services and that all RPC servers should be restarted if rpcbind is restarted. A restart can therefore affect more than the port-111 listener: registrations held by other RPC daemons may need to be rebuilt.

When removing it is safe—and when it is not

Server workload Effect of removing or masking rpcbind Recommended decision
NFSv4-only, every client verified as NFSv4, no other ONC RPC users NFSv4 services can operate without rpcbind. Services that depend on rpcbind, including NFSv3 support and rpc.statd, will not run. Mask first, test every workload, then consider package removal.
NFSv2 or NFSv3 server or client Service discovery and, in many configurations, locking or status operations can fail. Existing mounts may break or fail to reconnect. Keep rpcbind running.
NIS (YP) or another ONC RPC application Clients may no longer locate the RPC program, even if NFS is not installed. Identify and migrate or reconfigure the consumer before disabling rpcbind.
Packages such as libvirt or nfs-utils installed The package manager may report a dependency even when the daemon is not needed at runtime. Removing rpcbind can remove or alter those packages. Inspect reverse dependencies and package-manager changes before uninstalling.
No RPC listeners, mounts, maps, or applications after inventory No known runtime consumer remains, but an infrequent backup, automount, or monitoring job could still call RPC. Use a maintenance window, mask and monitor before uninstalling.

NFS version is the key distinction

NFSv4-only deployments

Ubuntu’s nfs.systemd documentation states that if a site will never use NFSv3 or NFSv2 and does not want rpcbind running, the correct approach is systemctl mask rpcbind. Masking also disables NFS services that depend on rpcbind, which are needed for NFSv3, without interfering with NFSv4 services. When rpcbind is masked, rpc.statd will not run.

“NFSv4-only” must describe the entire dependency chain, not merely the server’s export configuration. Confirm the protocol version used by every important client, including legacy hosts, appliances, backup systems, and automount entries. Check both static mounts and dynamically generated maps. A single client that still requires NFSv3 can turn an apparently safe change into an outage.

NFSv2 and NFSv3

NFSv2 and NFSv3 use rpcbind-related service discovery. NFSv3 environments can also rely on auxiliary daemons such as rpc.statd for lock and status behavior. Stopping rpcbind may prevent new mounts, prevent remounts after a reboot, or leave locking and recovery incomplete. Do not infer safety from a currently mounted filesystem: a mount that is working now may still require rpcbind when it reconnects or when a lock is recovered.

Port 111 and NFSv4

For an NFSv4-only configuration, blocking TCP and UDP port 111 is a valid hardening measure when all clients and services have been tested. Red Hat documents this approach for NFSv4-only systems and, for an RHEL 10 NFSv4-only server, provides a procedure that masks rpc-statd.service, rpcbind.service, and rpcbind.socket. Blocking a port does not replace protocol validation: an overlooked NFSv3 client will still fail, only less obviously.

Look for non-NFS consumers before making a change

Debian’s security documentation identifies NFS and NIS as common RPC-based services and warns that removing the portmap/rpcbind service is not always possible when other software uses RPC. The same principle applies to vendor applications, monitoring agents, backup tools, and virtualization integrations. Search configuration, running registrations, and package relationships separately; each reveals a different class of dependency.

  • NIS: Check whether the host is an NIS client, server, or name-service source. A machine can use NIS without exporting or mounting NFS.
  • Virtualization: Review libvirt and related management components. A package dependency is evidence that removal may change the installed set, not proof that rpcbind is contacted during normal operation.
  • Automation and backups: Inspect backup jobs, monitoring checks, automount maps, and boot-time scripts for RPC calls or NFS mounts.
  • Custom ONC RPC programs: Any application that registers a program number with rpcbind must be identified before port 111 is removed.

Inventory the host before stopping anything

  1. List mounted filesystems. Run findmnt -t nfs,nfs4. Record the server names, export paths, and protocol shown for each critical mount.
  2. Read persistent mount configuration. Inspect /etc/fstab, systemd mount units, and autofs maps. Look for explicit NFS version options and entries generated outside /etc/fstab.
  3. Review exports. On an NFS server, inspect the export configuration and identify every client that can mount it. Verify those clients are capable of NFSv4 and are configured to use it.
  4. Check NIS and application configuration. Search the host’s identity-service settings, virtualization configuration, backup definitions, and monitoring scripts for RPC or NFS references.
  5. Inspect systemd relationships. Run systemctl list-dependencies --all and examine enabled units for rpcbind, NFS, statd, NIS, and application services that may start before or after them.
  6. Record live registrations. Run rpcinfo -p localhost. Save the output so you know which RPC program numbers were registered before the change.
  7. Record listeners. Run ss -lntup | grep -E '(:111|rpc|nfs)'. Note port 111 and every related listener, process, address, and protocol.

Perform this inventory while the server is in its normal operating state. A quiet period can hide a scheduled backup or an automount that runs only when a user accesses a path.

Use a reversible change first

1. Schedule a maintenance window

Choose a period when NFS clients, backups, monitoring, and virtualization workloads can be exercised. Ensure console or out-of-band access is available in case a network-mounted dependency affects administration.

2. Mask the service and socket

On a systemd host, use:

systemctl mask --now rpcbind.service rpcbind.socket

The --now option stops currently running units while the mask prevents an indirect start through another unit. Masking is stronger than merely disabling a unit: a dependency cannot start a masked unit until you explicitly unmask it.

3. Apply distribution-specific NFS settings

On an RHEL NFSv4-only server, follow the vendor procedure in addition to masking rpcbind. That procedure includes masking rpc-statd.service, rpcbind.service, and rpcbind.socket, and configuring the NFS services for the NFSv4-only design. Do not copy only one command from that procedure while leaving a conflicting service enabled.

4. Test from real clients

From every important client, access each critical export and perform the operations users and jobs actually perform: read and write files, create and remove files, reconnect after a network interruption if that is part of normal operations, and run an automount trigger. Test backup and monitoring jobs, and exercise any virtualization workflow that uses the host. A local check that port 111 is closed is not a substitute for end-to-end testing.

5. Review logs and registrations

Check system and service logs for mount failures, timeout messages, statd or lock warnings, and units repeatedly attempting to start rpcbind. Re-run rpcinfo -p localhost and the listener check to document the post-change state. Keep the before-and-after output with the change record.

How to roll back quickly

If any critical test fails, restore the services before troubleshooting the application itself:

  1. Remove the masks: systemctl unmask rpcbind.service rpcbind.socket.
  2. Start the units: systemctl start rpcbind.service rpcbind.socket.
  3. Restart affected RPC servers and NFS-related services so they register again. The rpcbind manual specifically warns that RPC servers must be restarted after rpcbind is restarted.
  4. Retry the failed mount, lock operation, backup, or application workflow and confirm registrations with rpcinfo -p localhost.

Keep the rollback commands and access method in the maintenance ticket before beginning. If the host is remote and its management path depends on an NFS mount, have an alternate console or administrative channel ready.

Masking, disabling, stopping, and uninstalling are different

Method What it changes Reversibility When to use
Stop Ends the current process; another unit or boot sequence may start it again. Immediate start is possible. Short diagnostic test, not a durable policy.
Disable Removes the normal boot-time enablement but does not block dependency-based starts. Enable it again with the distribution’s systemd command. Only when you understand all indirect starts.
Mask Replaces the unit with a systemd mask so it cannot be started normally; masking both service and socket blocks socket activation. Use systemctl unmask. Safest first change for an NFSv4-only validation window.
Uninstall Removes package files and may alter dependent packages or services. Requires reinstalling packages and restoring configuration. After successful observation, dependency review, and an approved rollback plan.

Remove the package only after validation

A package relationship is not the same as a runtime requirement. The CIS RHEL benchmark notes that libvirt and nfs-utils can depend on the rpcbind package even when the daemon is not needed at runtime. Conversely, an application may call an RPC program without making the dependency obvious in the package database.

After a successful masked maintenance window, use your distribution’s package manager to simulate or review the removal. Read the proposed reverse-dependency changes carefully: if NFS utilities, virtualization components, or another required package would be removed or reconfigured, stop and reassess. Save package and configuration backups, then remove rpcbind only during an approved change window. Re-test the same client and application matrix afterward; package removal can change unit files and defaults even when the daemon was already masked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security and performance expectations

Removing rpcbind closes its TCP and UDP port-111 listeners and reduces the number of exposed services. That is a legitimate hardening benefit when no RPC consumer exists. However, no authoritative source establishes a general percentage performance or security improvement from removing rpcbind. Treat the change as attack-surface reduction and dependency cleanup, not as a guaranteed speed optimization.

If an RPC workload is required, restrict exposure with firewall rules, service binding, and network segmentation appropriate to that workload instead of disabling the discovery service blindly. For NFSv4-only systems, blocking port 111 can complement the configuration after client testing; it cannot make an NFSv3-dependent design compatible.

Final decision checklist

  • Every NFS client and mount has been identified and verified as NFSv4, or NFS is not used.
  • No NFSv2/NFSv3 export, mount, lock, or status operation remains.
  • NIS and every other ONC RPC application have been ruled out or migrated.
  • Live registrations and listeners were recorded with rpcinfo and ss.
  • Reverse package dependencies were reviewed before any uninstall.
  • A maintenance window includes tests for mounts, automounts, backups, monitoring, and virtualization.
  • Console access, unmask/start commands, and RPC-service restart steps are ready for rollback.

If any item is unanswered, leave rpcbind installed and running until the dependency is resolved. If all are satisfied, mask first, observe the real workload, and only then decide whether uninstalling the package provides enough operational value to justify the added recovery work.
