Rockstar lists GTA VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date. The ESRB rates it Mature 17+ and lists strong sexual content, nudity, intense violence, and use of drugs and alcohol among its descriptors. This comparison is about content ratings—not a broader claim that waiting is safer.
What does “safer” mean here?
This comparison uses ESRB age categories and content descriptors as a guide to the kinds of material identified by the ratings authority. They can help families and players make an informed choice, but they do not guarantee that a particular game is suitable for a particular person. ESRB ratings apply to the US and Canada; check the local rating system and the full content information where you live. The ratings and platforms below were checked against official Rockstar and ESRB pages on October 11, 2026.

Ratings alone do not establish that one game is safer in every sense, or that waiting reduces risks such as online interactions or spending. The available evidence here supports a comparison of rated content, not those broader claims.
How GTA VI compares with lower-rated open-world games
GTA VI is rated Mature 17+. The other listed games have lower ESRB categories, but they are not interchangeable: their genres, tones, platforms, and content descriptors differ. In-game purchases are also noted on the GTA VI ESRB listing.

| Game | ESRB rating and descriptors | Platform information in the cited listing | What the comparison tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto VI | Mature 17+: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol | PS5; Xbox Series X|S | Upcoming game; Rockstar lists a November 19, 2026 release date. |
| The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Nintendo Switch 2 Edition) | E10+: Fantasy Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes | Nintendo Switch 2 | A substantially lower ESRB category, while still including fantasy combat and mild suggestive themes. |
| Hogwarts Legacy | Teen: Blood, Fantasy Violence, Mild Language, Use of Alcohol | Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series; also separately listed for Switch 2 | A Teen-rated option; check the platform and content notes before choosing it. |
| Horizon: Forbidden West | Teen: Blood, Language, Use of Alcohol, Violence | PS4; PS5 | Another Teen-rated action-adventure option with its own descriptors. |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Mature 17+: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Sexual Content, Strong Language, Use of Drugs and Alcohol | Platform comparison not established here | It is also Mature 17+, so it does not meet a goal of choosing a lower ESRB category. |
Which alternative fits the player?
If the goal is a much lower ESRB category
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Nintendo Switch 2 Edition) is rated E10+ for fantasy violence and mild suggestive themes. That makes its ESRB category lower than GTA VI’s, but it does not mean the game has no combat or suggestive material. The cited listing is for Nintendo Switch 2.
If a Teen rating is a better fit
Hogwarts Legacy is rated Teen for blood, fantasy violence, mild language, and use of alcohol. Its cited platform information includes Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series, with a separate Switch 2 listing.

If the main appeal is another crime-focused open world
Red Dead Redemption 2 is an open-world option, but its Mature 17+ rating means it is not a lower-rated substitute for GTA VI. Its ESRB descriptors include blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, sexual content, strong language, and use of drugs and alcohol. The cited rating page does not establish a platform comparison for this article.

What to check before deciding
- Read the full descriptors, not just the age category. A lower category still comes with content notes, and the kinds of content differ from game to game.
- Match the game to the hardware available. The cited GTA VI listing names PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; the alternatives have their own platform availability.
- Check the rating in your region. ESRB information is for the US and Canada. Other regions use different rating systems and may present content guidance differently.
- Recheck volatile details close to purchase or release. Rockstar’s release date and platform information, and store availability, can change.
