Is Mafia: The Old Country open world?
No—not in the sense of a crime game built around roaming freely, choosing activities, and deciding when to pursue the main story. Game Director Alex Cox described it as “not an open world game in a conventional sense,” adding that the world is a backdrop to the story rather than its focus. In an Xbox Wire interview published July 31, 2025, Cox also said players can explore between missions, while Enzo’s goals constrain how far they can deviate.

The clearest description is a linear, story-focused game with a world that supports selected exploration and travel. That means the map is more than a sequence of enclosed mission spaces, but it is not a promise that every visible place is reachable or that players can ignore objectives to pursue their own activities.
What is the Mafia: The Old Country map like?
The game is set around the fictional town of San Celeste in 1900s Sicily. Enzo’s story takes him through the world of the Torrisi crime family. Official gameplay material shows a mix of countryside travel, town and rooftop movement, ruins, pursuits, and movement through hostile territory. These scenes illustrate how the setting is used; they are not a complete list of locations or proof that every area can be freely visited.

The result is a setting that can be experienced through different forms of movement, while the story determines the context and direction of that travel.
Can you explore the map in Mafia: The Old Country?
Yes, to a degree: Cox says players can explore between missions. But that freedom exists within a directed narrative, not as an unrestricted sandbox loop. Exploration is best understood as a way to inhabit the setting around the story, rather than a substitute for the story or a guarantee that all destinations are accessible at any time.

An official map size has not been stated in the sources cited here. No verified area measurement, complete region list, or exhaustive map image is available in the official material covered by those sources, so a square-mile figure or a claim that the map has a particular number of districts would be guesswork.
What can be said is that the game presents a Sicilian countryside and the fictional San Celeste area as a backdrop for its missions and travel. The scenes shown in official gameplay coverage should not be mistaken for a complete map catalogue.

Why did Hangar 13 choose a story-focused structure?
Cox says the team wanted a narrative experience that felt distinctly Mafia, and that a more linear, story-focused design served that goal. He cited Mafia: Definitive Edition and Mafia II as structural inspirations. That is a statement of design intent, not evidence that the games have identical maps or mechanics. In an Unreal Engine interview, the developers also described moving away from the previous installment’s open-world experience toward the series’ story-focused roots.
The team’s effort to build a convincing setting included traveling to Sicily to take photographs and gather reference material, as well as consulting photographs and written accounts. That research informed the developers’ version of Sicily; it does not mean the game map is a literal reproduction of the island.
