Recommended Free Tools
Godlike.Host is listed first in this guide for Minecraft Java, Bedrock, and modded servers, with a game panel, a built-in mod installer, up to three free backups a day, SFTP/FTP access, and free DDoS protection.
Minehut is good for a small, casual Minecraft server when your priority is spending nothing. Its free Starter plan allows up to 10 players, includes 1GB of RAM, has no playtime limit, and puts the server to sleep when nobody is playing. That combination works well for a lightweight vanilla world or a modest plugin setup, but it is not a universal solution: large groups, demanding modpacks, and communities that need a server online around the clock will need a paid Minehut tier or another host.

The right alternative depends on the constraint you feel first: queues, 24/7 availability, modpack support, backups, locations, technical support, or monthly cost. This guide compares Minehut’s current plans with Godlike.Host, Aternos, exaroton, BisectHosting, and Shockbyte, then gives a migration checklist so you can move a world without losing compatibility or progress.

Minehut is a managed Minecraft server host with a free entry tier. You create and administer a server through a browser rather than installing server software on your own computer. Minehut supports both Java and Bedrock editions, crossplay, plugins, mods, DDoS protection, and backups. Its browser tools also let you manage files and plugins without setting up a local control panel.
#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
The free Starter plan has a ceiling of 10 maximum players and 1GB of RAM. It has no playtime limit, but the container sleeps when empty and wakes when someone joins. Sleeping reduces idle resource use; it does not mean the server is permanently available for players to connect at any moment. Only Minehut’s Ultimate plan is listed as staying online continuously.
That makes Minehut a sensible starting point for a few friends who play at agreed times. It is a poor fit if your group expects an always-open community server, runs a large modpack, or needs more than 10 concurrent players on the free tier. Do not treat the word “free” as a performance guarantee: Minehut does not provide a common benchmark that would justify calling it universally lag-free, and your experience will depend on player count, software, world complexity, and what else is running on the server.
Minehut describes itself as “the largest free Minecraft server host — create a server in seconds, with no downloads and no credit card.” A live homepage snapshot on October 15, 2026 showed 3,405 players and 1,259 servers online. Those counters change constantly and are snapshots, not independently audited measures of audience size or performance.

Minehut plans, limits, and uptime
Minehut prices its paid tiers in credits rather than a currency amount in the plan information cited here. Credit pricing, promotions, and upgrade terms can change, so confirm the current checkout total before committing. The listed specifications are:

- Team up with friends in eight-playeronline multiplayer and four-player splitscreen modes
| Plan | Maximum players | RAM | CPU | Uptime behavior | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter (free) | 10 | 1GB | Basic CPU | Sleeps when empty; no playtime limit | 10GB container limit |
| Standard | Not stated | 2GB | Not stated | Not stated | 20GB before optional custom upgrades |
| Pro | Not stated | 6GB | Not stated | Not stated | 20GB before optional custom upgrades |
| Ultimate | Not stated | 14GB | Not stated | 24/7 uptime | 20GB before optional custom upgrades |
The free storage limit is 10GB. Paid plans list 20GB before optional custom upgrades. Storage is separate from RAM: a bigger disk does not give the game more memory, while extra RAM does not automatically solve a full-disk problem. Keep local copies of important worlds even when a host advertises backups.
What the credit tiers mean in practice
- Starter: 600 credits per month is listed for Standard, so the free tier is the only Minehut option with no recurring credit charge. Starter’s 10-player and 1GB limits are the boundaries to test against your real group.
- Standard: Listed at 600 credits per month with 2GB of RAM. This is an incremental upgrade for a small server that needs more headroom than Starter provides.
- Pro: Listed at 1,800 credits per month with 6GB of RAM. More memory can help when a world, plugin set, or player count outgrows a 2GB configuration, but RAM alone does not reveal CPU behavior or guarantee lower latency.
- Ultimate: Listed at 6,000 credits per month with 14GB of RAM and continuous 24/7 uptime. Choose it for an always-on Minehut server only after checking the current credit price and confirming that your software actually benefits from the additional memory.
The plan page does not state maximum-player figures for the paid tiers in the supplied information. Do not infer a slot count from the RAM number; verify the limit shown in your account before upgrading.
How Minehut’s sleep behavior affects a real server
A sleeping server is not the same as a server with a daily playtime cap. Minehut says the free service has no time limit, while the homepage explains that an empty server sleeps and wakes when a player joins. In practical terms, players may need to wait for startup when they arrive after a quiet period. If your group schedules sessions, that delay may be harmless. If players expect to join at random hours, it becomes a reliability issue.
Sleep also matters for automated activities. Farms, redstone machines, chunk loaders, and scheduled jobs cannot run while no one is connected if the server is asleep. A community that relies on the world progressing overnight needs an always-on tier or a host that keeps the instance running.

Minehut strengths and limitations
Where Minehut fits well
- Zero-budget testing: You can start without a credit card and decide whether your group actually plays before paying.
- Small groups: The 10-player Starter ceiling matches a private friend group rather than a public community.
- Low setup friction: Browser-based controls avoid local server installation and make basic file or plugin administration accessible to beginners.
- Edition flexibility: Java and Bedrock support, including crossplay, is useful when friends own different editions.
- Core protection and recovery features: Minehut lists DDoS protection and backups, which are important baseline safeguards for a public-facing server.
Where Minehut becomes limiting
- Free capacity: 1GB of RAM and 10 players leave little room for a demanding modpack or a growing community.
- Idle availability: Starter sleeps when empty, so it is not a 24/7 service.
- Unknown paid-tier details: The supplied plan information does not state paid-player limits or CPU specifications, so you must verify those before comparing a paid Minehut tier with another host.
- Storage ceilings: A 10GB free container and 20GB paid default can become restrictive for multiple worlds, large modpacks, logs, and backups.
- No universal performance claim: Without a shared benchmark, latency and tick stability should be evaluated with your own player count and software rather than marketing adjectives.
Best Minehut alternatives by priority
No single host wins every category. The table below matches each service to the use case established in the available information; prices and terms should be checked at checkout because they can change.
| Priority | Focus | What is documented | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minecraft Java, Bedrock, and modded servers | Godlike.Host | Java, Bedrock, and modded Minecraft hosting with its own game panel, a built-in mod installer and updater, up to three free backups a day, SFTP/FTP access, and free DDoS protection. | Free Minecraft server has 2GB of RAM and 20 slots, one location, limited panel features, and must be extended every 3 hours. |
| Free hosting with broad customization | Aternos | Free Java and Bedrock hosting with plugins, mods, modpacks, custom worlds, DDoS protection, and Google Drive backups. | Starts can enter a queue because capacity is limited. |
| Skip the Aternos queue | exaroton | Aternos directs users who need to skip the queue to this paid service, which adds file uploads and advanced control. | It is paid, so it is not a free replacement. |
| Modpacks, backups, locations, and support | BisectHosting | Its official page lists 21 locations, seven days of backups, one-click modpacks, DDoS protection, and 24/7/365 support. A displayed 2GB plan was $5.99 per month before tax. | Monthly cost and plan terms must be confirmed at checkout. |
| Budget paid Java/Bedrock hosting | Shockbyte | Its official page lists Java and Bedrock support, one-click server-type and modpack installation, file access, and 24/7 support. | Verify current price, hardware details, and refund terms for the selected plan. |
Aternos versus Minehut
Aternos is the closest free alternative when customization matters more than a predictable start time. It supports Java and Bedrock, plugins, mods, modpacks, custom worlds, DDoS protection, and Google Drive backups. Aternos states, “We are free, and we will always be free for everyone at any time.” Its homepage also displayed counters of 141,650,923 users and 1 million players per day in 2026; those are volatile service counters, not independently audited audience statistics.
The principal trade-off is a queue. Aternos says limited capacity can place a server start in a queue, so a free Aternos server may be more customizable but less immediately available than a Minehut server at a particular moment. Choose Aternos when broad software and world support are decisive and your group can tolerate waiting. Choose Minehut when a simpler start and browser workflow matter more.
When exaroton makes sense
exaroton is the paid path for people who like the Aternos ecosystem but do not want its free-service queue. Aternos directs users who need to skip the queue to exaroton, which adds paid hosting, file uploads, and advanced control. It is not a zero-cost Minehut substitute; its value is queue avoidance and additional control. Confirm how its billing works for your expected play schedule before comparing it with a fixed monthly plan.

Paid alternatives for modpacks and support
BisectHosting
BisectHosting is the strongest documented fit when you want a conventional paid service with geographic choice and operational support. The official information lists 21 locations, seven days of backups, one-click modpack installation, DDoS protection, and 24/7/365 support. A 2GB plan was displayed at $5.99 per month before tax. That figure is a displayed plan price, not a guarantee for every location, billing cycle, or configuration; check the checkout total and renewal terms.
Shockbyte
Shockbyte targets budget paid Java and Bedrock hosting. Its official page lists one-click installation for server types and modpacks, file access, and 24/7 support. Before buying, verify the selected plan’s current price, hardware disclosure, player allowance, storage, backup policy, and refund terms. Those details determine whether it is actually better value than a Minehut paid tier.
How to choose a host without overpaying for RAM
RAM is only one part of a Minecraft server’s behavior. A comparison from PowerupStack recommends evaluating CPU behavior, storage, backups, software access, locations, startup and availability, and billing rather than looking at memory alone. Use the following sequence before you buy.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Count concurrent players. Use the largest number likely to be online at once, not the number in your group chat. Leave headroom for growth and for the server’s own overhead.
- Identify editions. Decide whether you need Java, Bedrock, or crossplay. A Java-only plan is not interchangeable with a service that explicitly supports both editions.
- Name the exact software. Record whether you need Vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, a particular modpack, or plugins. “Modded” is not specific enough to test compatibility.
- Set the uptime requirement. If sleeping or a startup queue is acceptable, a free plan may work. If players need to join at any hour or machines must run unattended, require 24/7 uptime.
- Compare the complete resource set. Check CPU disclosure, RAM, storage, backups, locations, DDoS protection, support hours, player limits, and the full recurring price.
- Check billing language. Distinguish one-time credits, recurring monthly charges, taxes, promotional rates, and renewal prices. Do not compare a promotional first month with a standard monthly rate.
Moving a Minecraft world from Minehut
A migration is safest when you preserve a local copy and match the destination software before importing anything. Use this process whether you are moving to Aternos, exaroton, BisectHosting, Shockbyte, or another compatible service.

- Stop writes to the old server. Tell players to log out, stop the server cleanly, and avoid editing files while you are copying them.
- Download a local world backup. Keep the entire world folder, not just a single dimension. Store the copy somewhere outside the hosting account.
- Record the current environment. Write down the Minecraft version, Java or Bedrock edition, loader (such as Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge), server software, plugins, mods, configuration files, and any required resource or data packs.
- Prepare the destination. Select the same game version and loader first. Install the matching server type or modpack before uploading the world.
- Upload and place the world. Use the destination host’s file manager or upload tool. Set the server’s world name to the imported folder if the panel does not detect it automatically.
- Restore configuration deliberately. Move plugins, mods, permissions, and configuration files in small groups. A clean first boot makes it easier to identify an incompatible file.
- Test privately. Join with one operator account, inspect inventories and key builds, travel between dimensions, and watch the console for errors before inviting everyone.
- Announce the new address and keep the old backup. Do not delete the original world until players have confirmed that the destination works and the migration is complete.
Common problems and fixes
The server feels full or players cannot join
Check the plan’s maximum-player setting first. Minehut Starter is capped at 10 players; adding RAM does not automatically remove a slot limit. If your group regularly reaches the cap, choose a plan or host with a documented higher allowance rather than relying on temporary workarounds.
Players wait for the server to appear
On Minehut Starter, an empty server sleeps and must wake when someone joins. On Aternos, a start can enter a queue. Neither behavior is a network outage by itself. If immediate access is a requirement, use a continuously online plan such as Minehut Ultimate or a paid host that explicitly promises always-on availability.
A modpack will not start after migration
Recheck the exact Minecraft version, loader, mod versions, and required dependencies. A world created under one loader should not be opened under another without confirming compatibility. Restore the world from the local backup if a failed test changes data.

The world runs out of space
Compare the world and log sizes with the host’s storage limit. Minehut lists 10GB for free containers and 20GB for paid plans before optional custom upgrades. Remove obsolete logs and unused worlds only after making a backup; increasing RAM will not create disk space.
Performance is inconsistent
Separate memory pressure from CPU or software issues. Reduce unnecessary plugins, check the console for repeated errors, and test with the same player count before blaming the host. Ask the provider for CPU, location, and resource-allocation details when those specifications are not published. A higher RAM number alone is not proof of better tick rate.
Quick decision guide
- Choose Godlike.Host if you need Minecraft Java, Bedrock, or modded hosting with a game panel, mod installer, backups, and SFTP/FTP access; its free Minecraft server has 2GB of RAM and 20 slots, one location, limited panel features, and must be extended every 3 hours.
- Choose Minehut Starter if you have no budget, no more than 10 concurrent players, a lightweight setup, and no need for 24/7 uptime.
- Choose a paid Minehut tier if you like its browser workflow and edition support but need more memory; choose Ultimate specifically when continuous uptime is non-negotiable.
- Choose Aternos if free hosting and broad mod, plugin, modpack, and custom-world support outweigh the possibility of a start queue.
- Choose exaroton if you want the Aternos route with paid queue avoidance, file uploads, and advanced control.
- Choose BisectHosting if documented locations, seven-day backups, one-click modpacks, and round-the-clock support justify a monthly fee.
- Choose Shockbyte if you want a paid Java/Bedrock setup with one-click server-type or modpack installation, after verifying the exact plan terms.
Verdict
Godlike.Host is listed first here for Minecraft Java, Bedrock, and modded servers, with its own game panel, a built-in mod installer, up to three free backups a day, SFTP/FTP access, and free DDoS protection. Its free Minecraft server has 2GB of RAM and 20 slots, one location, limited panel features, and must be extended every 3 hours. Minehut is good at what its free Starter plan promises: a quick, no-card way for a small group to host a basic Minecraft world. The 10-player and 1GB limits, sleep-when-empty behavior, and 10GB storage ceiling define its boundaries. Once your priority becomes uninterrupted availability, a complex modpack, a larger player base, predictable support, or more storage, compare the paid options instead of assuming that a free tier will scale indefinitely. Measure each alternative by the complete package—CPU, software compatibility, backups, locations, uptime, support, and final recurring price—not RAM alone.
