Yes. MTG Arena is free to download and play, and you do not have to spend money to access its core gameplay. Wizards of the Coast describes purchases as optional. You can build a collection, enter events, and progress through the free reward track by playing, although paid currency and optional upgrades can make some parts of the experience faster or add cosmetics and extra rewards.

Is MTG Arena free to play?
MTG Arena is a digital version of Magic: The Gathering available on desktop and mobile. Wizards of the Coast’s getting-started guidance states, “MTG Arena is free to download.” You can install it, create an account, play matches, complete quests, and advance through the standard progression system without paying an entry fee.
Free access does not mean every item or activity is unlimited. Arena has an in-game economy with two main currencies, optional paid reward tracks, card packs, event entries, and cosmetic items. Those purchases provide convenience or additional rewards; they do not turn the basic game into a subscription or paywall.

- Do you have to spend money to play MTG Arena? No. Spending is optional.

Gold is the currency you build through play
Gold comes from ordinary participation: games, quests, wins, and events. You can then decide whether to spend it on packs, a draft entry, or visual items. Your actual income depends on the activities and offers currently available in the client.
Gems can be bought or earned
Wizards identifies gems as the currency that can be purchased in the store, while also stating that gems can be earned. They can pay for events, packs, and cosmetics. What can you do for free?
Play the core game
Free access includes the basic match experience and the ability to progress your account. You are not required to buy packs before you can play. Any collection limits you encounter are part of the normal card-collection model, not a requirement to pay for access to matches.
Use the base Set Mastery track
Set Mastery is the progression track tied to a particular set. You earn experience through play and receive rewards along the base track. This track is available to everyone; it is not locked behind the Mastery Pass.

Wizards’ getting-started FAQ describes Midweek Magic as a free-entry activity that offers cosmetic items. The official description does not establish an evergreen schedule or a fixed reward for every occurrence, so use the current event listing in Arena for the live availability and terms.
Free-entry events are useful even if you never buy gems: they give you a way to participate in limited activities without paying an entry fee and can add cosmetic rewards to your account.

How free progression can fund a draft
Quick Draft is a concrete example of earned currency supporting a substantial game mode. Wizards lists the entry cost as 5,000 gold or 750 gems. In Quick Draft, you keep the cards you draft and receive additional rewards based on your wins.

- Play the event and review the result. Win-based rewards are additional to the cards you drafted.
The 5,000-gold and 750-gem figures are listed event terms, not a guarantee that every draft format will always cost the same. Event prices and rules can change with releases, so verify the in-client listing immediately before entering.
What does the Mastery Pass add?
The base Set Mastery track is free. The Mastery Pass is an optional upgrade that unlocks an additional reward track. Wizards describes it as “an optional way for players to earn additional rewards through Set Mastery.” Buying it is not necessary to earn experience or claim the base-track rewards.
Current-set examples, including the Reality Fracture presentation, show that the paid track can contain packs, individual card rewards, gold, gems, event tokens, and cosmetics. The exact contents are tied to the set. Reality Fracture was announced for an Arena release on September 29, 2026; those rewards should be read as that set’s offering, not a permanent specification for every Mastery Pass.
Is the Mastery Pass worth it?

- How often will you play before the set track ends? A pass is more useful when you expect to earn enough experience to claim a substantial portion of its rewards.
- Which rewards matter to you? Packs and cards help collection building; gold, gems, and event tokens support future entries; cosmetics have primarily visual value.
- Are you buying convenience or power? The pass adds rewards but is not required to queue for matches or use the free track.
- Can you judge the live track first? Review the reward list and the remaining duration in the client before purchasing.
Do not assume that a pass is automatically profitable, that every reward will be useful to your decks, or that a calculation based on one set applies to the next. A universal value calculation would require a current price, the complete live reward list, and your own valuation of cards, currency, events, and cosmetics.
Can you earn gems in MTG Arena?
Yes. Wizards says gems can be earned as well as purchased. That makes gems different from a strictly cash-only currency. However, the official material used here does not specify a permanent earning route, a fixed number of gems per activity, or a guaranteed weekly schedule.
When you are deciding whether to spend money, inspect the current event, reward, and progression screens rather than relying on an old guide. The available ways to earn gems, and the amount offered by a particular activity, can be tied to the current set or event rotation.

Not buying packs does change how quickly your collection grows. Packs are one of the listed uses for both gold and gems, while Quick Draft gives you drafted cards plus win-based rewards. A player who wants specific cards quickly may value purchases or a paid event more than a player who is content to build gradually.

A practical free-to-play progression plan
The following approach keeps spending optional while leaving room to change course later.
- Start with the free account. Download Arena on a supported desktop or mobile platform and play before deciding whether any purchase solves a problem you actually have.
- Learn the economy screen. Identify your gold and gem balances separately. Gold is earned through play; gems may be bought or earned. Do not treat a gem price as though it were a gold price.
- Complete available quests and games. These are the activities Wizards identifies as sources of gold and progression. Because routine amounts can change, record the terms shown in your current client rather than using an old daily-income claim.
- Claim base Set Mastery rewards. Playing earns experience, and the free track remains available without the Mastery Pass.
