Need for Speed has not been confirmed canceled, but its next game has no publicly established release plan. GameSpot reported in August 2025 that EA paused work on the next title as Criterion shifted to Battlefield. In July 2026, Criterion’s leadership said the studio was “solely focused on Battlefield.” EA was also reported to have said the franchise would return, but no new developer, project or date has been identified in the coverage reviewed.
What happened to the next Need for Speed?
In August 2025, GameSpot reported that Criterion was brought under the Battlefield Studios banner to support Battlefield 6, and that development on the next Need for Speed title had been paused. The outlet also reported EA’s assurance that the franchise was not dead and would return in the future. That assurance was reported by GameSpot; the article is not an EA announcement. GameSpot’s August 27, 2025 report gives the account.
In July 2026, GameSpot quoted Rebecka Coutaz, Battlefield Studios Europe’s vice president and general manager, saying: “We are solely focused on Battlefield.” The comment establishes Criterion’s stated focus at that time, not a permanent decision by EA to end Need for Speed. GameSpot reported the statement on July 14, 2026; Windows Central also relayed it while citing IGN. Windows Central’s July 8, 2026 coverage is corroboration, not evidence of a separate EA announcement.

Is Need for Speed canceled?
Not on the evidence in these reports. A pause in development and Criterion’s current focus on Battlefield do not prove the franchise has been permanently canceled. Conversely, EA’s reported promise of a future return does not establish that a new game is currently in development or guarantee when one will arrive.
EA CEO Andrew Wilson’s August 4, 2026 update about the company’s next chapter discusses broader priorities but makes no Need for Speed announcement. It does not change what is known about the series’ status. EA’s company update contains no new project, developer or release date for the franchise.
