Yes—if you want control over where your files live and are prepared to run a Linux service. In 2026, Nextcloud remains a capable private file-sync and collaboration platform, but self-hosting means accepting responsibility for updates, TLS, databases, backups, monitoring, storage growth and incident recovery. It is a strong fit for a technically confident household, gaming lab or small organisation; it is a poor fit if you want a maintenance-free replacement for Google Drive.
The current documentation covers Nextcloud Server 35 (Hub 26 Summer). The decision is therefore less about whether the software still exists and more about whether you want to operate the infrastructure around it.

What “self-hosting Nextcloud” means
Self-hosting means you provide the machine, operating system, network connection, storage and backup destination, then install and operate Nextcloud Server yourself. The application gives you a web interface, desktop and mobile clients, file sharing, calendars, contacts and an extensible app ecosystem. Your server can be a machine at home, in a lab or in a rented environment, but the operating work remains yours unless you buy a managed service.
For a rented Linux VPS, an Antihost VPS offers full root access, NVMe storage, 1–16 vCPUs and 2–64 GB RAM in the USA East, Netherlands and Ukraine. It is self-managed, so you still operate Nextcloud’s database, TLS, updates and backups.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
For a gaming household, that can mean one private place for screenshots, recordings, save-file archives, mod collections, manuals and family documents. It does not turn Nextcloud into a low-latency multiplayer game server: it is a web application and file platform, so your internet upload speed, storage and server administration still determine how pleasant large transfers are.
What changed by October 2026
Nextcloud’s current server documentation is for version 35, also branded Hub 26 Summer. The maintenance schedule lists:
| Release | Release date | Purpose described by Nextcloud |
|---|---|---|
| 35.0.0 | 16 September 2026 | Initial major release |
| 35.0.1 | 24 September 2026 | Maintenance release |
| 35.0.2 | 15 October 2026 | Maintenance release |
Supported major versions receive maintenance releases aimed at known critical bugs and security problems. That cadence is useful only if you apply the releases: an unattended installation does not become safer merely because a new package exists.
When self-hosting is worth it
You need control over data location
With your own server, you choose the country, facility and storage media that hold the files. You can decide which users, devices and applications receive access, and you can keep the service on a private network or expose only the functions you need. This is valuable when game captures, personal records or workplace files should not be placed in a third party’s default storage region.
You want custom integrations
Nextcloud’s app model lets an operator tailor the service to a household, lab or small organisation. You can enable only the calendar, contacts, file, media or collaboration features you actually use, and integrate the platform with other systems you administer. Customisation is an advantage only when someone is willing to test updates against those apps.

You are comfortable operating Linux services
A sustainable deployment requires more than clicking an installer. You need to understand an operating system, permissions, a database, HTTPS certificates, storage capacity and backup restoration. If you already maintain a home server or game-lab infrastructure, Nextcloud can be a reasonable additional service. If those tasks are unfamiliar and there is no time to learn them, managed hosting is usually the safer choice.
You accept reliability as an engineering task
Self-hosting makes you the person who notices a failed disk, expired certificate, full filesystem or broken upgrade. Reliability comes from monitoring, tested backups, spare capacity and a recovery procedure—not from the application name.

- You want a zero-maintenance file-sync service and cannot respond to security advisories.
- Your only copy of important files would be on the Nextcloud machine.
- You have no dependable internet connection or upload capacity for the devices that need access.
- No one can administer Linux, TLS, the database and upgrades.
- The service is organisation-critical but there is no incident-response or support plan.
For organisation-critical deployments, Nextcloud’s documentation recommends considering professional deployment consulting and support so scaling and reliability are designed rather than improvised.
Current platform requirements
Nextcloud 35 documents these server platforms:
- Ubuntu 26.04 or 24.04
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 or 9
- Debian 13
- SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 16 or 15 SP7 or later
- openSUSE Leap 16
- CentOS Stream
- Alpine Linux
Documented database choices include MariaDB 10.11, 11.4, 11.8 or 12.3, and PostgreSQL 14 through 18. PostgreSQL and MariaDB are the recommended database families in the requirements documentation. SQLite is recommended only for testing and minimal instances, not as the default for a growing household or organisation.
Supported PHP versions are 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5, with PHP 8.5 recommended. Nextcloud also strongly recommends using the latest version of your operating system for the most complete and stable client experience.

Memory planning
There is no honest single “RAM requirement” for every installation. Nextcloud states: “Memory requirements for running a Nextcloud server are greatly variable, depending on the numbers of users, apps, files and volume of server activity.” The documented minimum is 128 MB of RAM per process; 512 MB per process is recommended. Those figures are per process, not a promise that a complete installation will run well with a particular amount of total system memory. Concurrent users, previews, background jobs and enabled apps all affect the result.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Storage and hardware choices
The authoritative requirements do not identify one NAS, mini PC, SSD or UPS model that fits a typical reader. Choose hardware by the workload you can measure: file volume, number of simultaneous users, large video uploads, database activity, network speed and the capacity of your backup destination. Solid-state storage can improve responsiveness, while redundant or separately backed-up storage reduces the impact of a device failure; neither removes the need to test restores.
Choose an installation path
Nextcloud documents four approaches. The right one depends on how much of the stack you want to manage directly.
| Approach | What you control | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Source installation | Web server, PHP, permissions, database and application files | Maximum control, but every component and upgrade is your responsibility |
| All-in-One container | A packaged deployment and its configuration | Less manual assembly; you still own the host, storage, networking, updates and recovery |
| Snap package | A distribution-managed package and host integration | Automated HTTPS issuance and renewal through Let’s Encrypt, with package and host maintenance still required |
| Web installer | Installation choices made through a browser | Simple initial setup does not eliminate database, security, backup or upgrade duties |
Source installation
Use this when you need fine-grained control over the web server, PHP modules, filesystem layout or database. Before exposing it to users, document permissions, TLS configuration, update order and how you will roll back a failed upgrade. This route is powerful but has the largest administration surface.
All-in-One container
The All-in-One option packages the application into a container-oriented deployment. It can reduce the amount of manual wiring compared with a source install, but it does not make the underlying host disposable. Plan persistent storage, networking, update windows and backups before creating user accounts.

Snap
The snap is attractive for a small personal server because it includes automated HTTPS certificate issuance and renewal through Let’s Encrypt. Certificate automation removes one recurring task, not all security work: you still need to patch the host and package, watch disk usage and verify that backups and restores work.
Web installer
A browser-based installer can get a test instance running quickly. Treat it as an installation mechanism rather than a managed service. Production use still requires a supported operating system, a suitable database, TLS, access controls, updates and recovery planning.
A practical setup sequence
- Define the workload. List users, devices, file types, expected growth and whether large game recordings will be uploaded remotely. Decide which data must survive a server failure.
- Select a supported host platform. Use one of the documented operating systems and keep it current. Avoid building a production instance on an obsolete distribution simply because an old tutorial uses it.
- Select the database. Choose PostgreSQL or MariaDB for a real household or organisation. Reserve SQLite for testing or a genuinely minimal instance.
- Choose the deployment method. Pick source, All-in-One, snap or web installer according to how much configuration you want to own. Record the chosen versions and configuration.
- Provision storage and permissions. Separate application, user data and backup destinations where practical. Confirm that the service account can read and write only the paths it needs.
- Enable HTTPS and access controls. The snap can automate Let’s Encrypt certificates; other methods require you to configure certificate issuance and renewal. Use strong unique credentials and restrict administrative access.
- Configure background work and notifications. Schedule maintenance jobs, previews and notifications so heavy activity does not collide with the busiest gaming or backup periods.
- Create and test backups. Back up both user files and the database. Perform a restore to a separate location before trusting the service with irreplaceable captures or documents.
- Test clients and sharing. Sign in from the browsers, desktop clients and mobile devices your household uses. Upload a large file, resume an interrupted transfer and verify that sharing permissions behave as intended.
- Write the recovery procedure. Record administrator contacts, host details, backup locations, certificate steps and the order for restoring the database and files.
The maintenance you are signing up for
Security updates
Nextcloud’s supported major versions receive releases for critical bugs and security problems. Its long-term-support wording covers maintenance releases for high- and critical-severity security issues, data-loss fixes and regressions. You still need a process that notices releases, checks app compatibility, takes a current backup and applies updates within a defined window.
Application compatibility
Every enabled app expands the surface that must be checked after an upgrade. Disable or remove apps you do not use, and test the ones that matter to your workflow before updating a production instance.
Capacity and performance
Watch free storage, database growth, memory pressure and upload failures. A server that works for two users and a few documents may behave differently when several devices synchronise video captures or generate previews at once. Capacity planning is an ongoing practice, not a one-time hardware purchase.

Backups and disaster recovery
A backup that has never been restored is an assumption. Keep copies on a destination independent of the primary server, include the database, and periodically prove that you can recover accounts, permissions and files. Decide how much recent work you could recreate before choosing backup frequency.
Self-hosted versus managed Nextcloud
Nextcloud’s official provider directory lists hosting providers, and its Simple Signup programme is intended to let private users select quality providers. The enterprise offering describes hosting, maintenance and management of a dedicated instance, along with support features such as Nextcloud Guard. Availability, storage limits, geographic coverage, support terms and pricing vary, so check the current provider or enterprise terms before committing.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Data-control model | You choose the host, storage and integrations | You rely on the provider’s infrastructure and policies |
| Recurring cost | Hardware, electricity, connectivity, storage and your time | A recurring service fee; current pricing depends on provider and plan |
| Updates | You schedule, test and apply them | The provider handles much of the platform maintenance |
| Backups and recovery | You design, fund and test the process | Verify exactly what the provider backs up and how restoration works |
| Scaling | You add capacity and redesign the stack | The provider may offer larger plans or managed scaling |
| Support | Your own troubleshooting and documentation | Support scope and response times depend on the contract |
| Customisation | Broad control over apps, network and integrations | Subject to the provider’s permitted features and policies |
| Network reliability | Bound to your connection, power and location | Uses the provider’s facilities and network, with terms that must be checked |
Managed hosting is not automatically cheaper than self-hosting. Self-hosting replaces a service bill with capital equipment, electricity, connectivity, backup storage and operator time. Because those inputs differ widely, a universal break-even price or hours-per-month estimate would be misleading.

Can it replace Google Drive?
For file storage, synchronisation, sharing and collaboration, Nextcloud can fill a similar role while giving you more control over hosting and integrations. The trade-off is operational: a hosted commercial service shifts much of the maintenance, redundancy and incident response to its operator. Nextcloud is a replacement only if you are willing to provide those functions yourself or pay a provider to do so.
For gaming, it is well suited to synchronising non-time-critical files such as screenshots, save archives and mod documentation across devices. Large recordings and mod packs require realistic upload capacity and storage planning. Keep actively locked or frequently changing game databases on the platform only when the game and client tolerate the resulting file-sync behaviour.
Quick Recap
Decision checklist
- Choose self-hosting if data location, privacy and customisation outweigh the work of Linux, database, TLS, backups and updates.
- Choose managed hosting if you want Nextcloud’s interface and ecosystem but need someone else to operate the infrastructure.
- Start with a test instance if you are unsure. Validate clients, upload speeds, app compatibility and restore procedures before migrating important files.
- Do not self-host yet if you cannot name the person who will apply a critical security update or restore the service after a disk failure.
