Yes—NieR:Automata is worth playing if you want an action RPG where fast melee and ranged combat share the spotlight with an unusual, story-led single-player experience. No platform is the universal winner: choose based on your hardware, whether portability matters, your control preferences, and the edition available where you live.
What kind of game is NieR:Automata?
Square Enix describes NieR:Automata as a single-player action RPG about androids 2B, 9S, and A2 fighting in a world overrun by machines. Its combat combines melee and ranged attacks. Square Enix’s game page and the Steam listing provide the official descriptions.

That blend is central to the decision: the game is not just an action title with story between fights. If you prefer a conventional, strictly linear action-game narrative, its unusual storytelling may or may not work for you. That part is a matter of taste, not a platform difference.

The practical trade-off is portability against how a particular player feels about the controls and presentation. If handheld play is a major reason you want the game, the Switch edition is the directly relevant option; if not, compare the editions and performance information for the hardware you already own.
Which edition should you buy?
The named releases are not interchangeable labels. Steam describes Game of the YoRHa Edition as containing the game plus DLC and bonus content; Nintendo identifies The End of YoRHa Edition as the Switch version. Steam’s listing and Nintendo’s listing are the relevant checks for those editions.
