For most owners of the original standard Switch, Switch 2 is worth upgrading to only if you will use its new games, larger screen, extra storage or new features. It is a much less compelling replacement when your current library still satisfies you, you mostly play handheld and prioritize battery life or low weight, or the current price would strain your budget. The right answer depends on your existing model, favorite games, play style and local price—not on the fact that Switch 2 is newer.
Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. It plays compatible physical and digital Switch games, but Nintendo warns that some titles are unsupported or not fully compatible. Check the current compatibility listing for the games you actually play before selling your old console.

What you gain by moving from the original Switch
The upgrade is easiest to justify when several of these benefits matter to you at the same time:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Switch 2-exclusive software: New games that require Switch 2 cannot be played on the original system.
- A larger, sharper handheld display: Switch 2 uses a 7.9-inch LCD, compared with the standard Switch’s 6.2-inch LCD.
- Much more built-in storage: Switch 2 includes 256 GB, while the standard Switch includes 32 GB.
- New controls and social tools: Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically and support mouse-style controls in compatible software. GameChat adds online voice and other communication features.
- Higher-end television output in supported software: Compatible games and displays can use 4K resolution, HDR and VRR features.
These are practical improvements rather than a universal transformation. If you mainly replay games you already own in handheld mode, the larger display and storage may be the only changes you notice regularly.

Original Switch versus Switch 2: the meaningful differences
| Category | Standard Nintendo Switch | Nintendo Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld display | 6.2-inch LCD | 7.9-inch LCD |
| Internal storage | 32 GB | 256 GB |
| Stated battery estimate | Approximately 4.5–9 hours | Approximately 2–6.5 hours |
| Expandable storage | Standard microSD cards | microSD Express cards |
| TV features | Original Switch output capabilities | 4K, HDR and VRR in supported games with compatible equipment |
| Controllers | Original Joy-Con | Joy-Con 2 with magnetic attachment and mouse controls in supported games |
The battery figures are published estimates, not guaranteed runtime. Nintendo Life’s comparison shows Switch 2 as larger and heavier than the standard Switch, while its shorter estimated runtime makes the handheld trade-off particularly important for commuters, travelers and long sessions away from an outlet. The independent Associated Press review also reports the 7.9-inch display and 256 GB storage. See the model comparison at Nintendo Life and the Associated Press review.
How much better is the screen and TV experience?
Handheld play
The 7.9-inch LCD gives games and menus more physical space than the standard model’s 6.2-inch LCD. That can improve readability and make split-screen or detailed interfaces easier to see. It is still an LCD, however. Owners of the original Switch OLED have a different calculation: the OLED model’s contrast and black levels can look more impressive for handheld play than a larger LCD, so Switch 2’s size and resolution increase may not feel like a straightforward image-quality upgrade.
Television output
Switch 2 supports 4K resolution, HDR and VRR in TV mode when the game and display support them. Nintendo says TV-mode VRR became available through a system update released September 10, 2026. These are conditional features, not guarantees that every game renders at 4K or uses HDR and VRR. You need compatible software, a compatible television or monitor and the appropriate connection setup. Nintendo’s feature overview lists the supported play modes and requirements at Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page.
Will your original Switch games work?
Switch 2 accepts compatible physical cartridges and digital games from the original Switch. Your Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership can carry over, and compatible purchases can be managed as virtual game cards across Switch and Switch 2 consoles. Nintendo’s launch announcement made the backward-compatibility promise while explicitly warning that some games may be unsupported or not fully compatible; that qualification still matters today. Read the item-by-item support information at Nintendo Support’s compatibility page.
Check your personal library before buying
- Write down the physical and digital games you play most, including titles you plan to buy soon.
- Open Nintendo’s current compatibility information and check each important title rather than assuming the whole library transfers.
- Look for a Switch 2 Edition or upgrade pack if you want improved graphics or gameplay in a game you already own.
- Confirm that any required accessories, instruments or specialty controllers are supported on Switch 2.
Compatibility is therefore a strong advantage, but not a blank check. A console that cannot run one of your essential games or peripherals may need to remain connected alongside Switch 2.
Do your old dock, memory cards and controllers carry over?
Backward-compatible games do not mean every piece of hardware transfers. Nintendo’s compatibility chart identifies the original Switch dock and standard microSD cards as incompatible with Switch 2. Switch 2 requires microSD Express cards for expanded storage. The old AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly, but it cannot power Switch 2 in TV mode.

Some original Switch controllers and peripherals can connect wirelessly, but support varies by item. Check the official chart for each controller, accessory or specialty peripheral before budgeting as though it will work. You may be able to keep a set of original controllers for multiplayer while replacing the dock, storage card or unsupported accessories.

What are Switch 2’s new controls and social features?
Joy-Con 2
Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically and can provide mouse-style input in games designed for it. Those functions are software-dependent; they do not turn every existing Switch title into a mouse-controlled game. If you mostly play conventional controller-based games, the new attachment system is a convenience rather than a reason by itself to upgrade.
GameChat
GameChat’s online features require an internet connection, a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Video chat additionally requires a compatible USB-C camera, sold separately. Nintendo notes that availability varies by country. Review the current requirements on Nintendo’s feature page before buying a camera or assuming a particular communication option is available in your region.
GameShare
Switch 2 can use GameShare for supported games, including local sharing with an original Switch in situations Nintendo permits. GameShare has title-specific and system-specific restrictions, so treat it as an extra feature—not as a way to make every multiplayer game shareable with an older console.
Switch 2 Editions and upgrade packs: value for games you already own
Select Switch games receive Switch 2 Editions with enhanced graphics or gameplay. Nintendo’s model allows an existing owner to buy an upgrade pack rather than repurchase the entire game at full price. Whether that is worthwhile depends on the title, the improvements and the current regional price of the pack.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNintendo’s August 1, 2025 investor presentation described this approach while noting that more than 100 million people worldwide were playing Switch at that time. That installed-base figure is historical context, not a current 2026 estimate. Check the current software catalogue and the exact upgrade-pack price for each game you care about in Nintendo’s investor presentation and the relevant store listing.

What does Switch 2 cost, and what else belongs in the budget?
Nintendo Life’s buyer guide reported a US Switch 2 price of $499.99 after a September 2026 increase. That is a time-sensitive secondary-source figure, not a universal price: verify the live US price on Nintendo’s store or an authoritative retailer, and use the price in your own country and currency when deciding. Do not apply the US figure to another market.
Your actual upgrade cost can include more than the console:
- A microSD Express card if 256 GB is not enough for your digital library.
- A compatible USB-C camera if you specifically want GameChat video.
- Replacement or additional controllers and peripherals if your originals are unsupported.
- Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs for games you already own.
- Potential resale value or trade-in value for the original Switch, balanced against the benefit of keeping it as a second system.
Compare that total with the value of the games and features you will use in the first year. A discount or a strong resale price can change the calculation, while a required accessory bundle can make an apparently acceptable console price less attractive.

Upgrade now if most of these statements are true
- You want one or more Switch 2-exclusive games.
- Your standard Switch’s 6.2-inch screen or 32 GB storage is limiting you.
- You play on a 4K/HDR/VRR-capable television and the supported-game improvements matter to you.
- You will use Joy-Con 2 features, GameChat or supported GameShare scenarios.
- Your important games are confirmed compatible, and any upgrade packs you want are reasonably priced.
- The current local console price fits your budget after storage and accessory costs.
Keep the original Switch for now if these describe you
- Your library is almost entirely existing Switch software and it runs well enough for you.
- You mostly play handheld and value longer estimated battery life and a lighter, smaller system over a larger display.
- You own a Switch OLED and are satisfied with its handheld image quality.
- You rely on an original dock, standard microSD card or specialty peripheral that you do not want to replace.
- The current regional price would force you to cut spending needed for games or essential household costs.
A practical buy-now-or-wait decision
- Identify your model. Standard Switch, Switch OLED and Switch Lite owners face different display and accessory trade-offs. This comparison’s battery and size figures are for the standard Switch versus Switch 2.
- Choose your three most important games. Verify compatibility and whether a Switch 2 Edition or upgrade pack exists.
- Measure your play pattern. If most hours are handheld, prioritize weight, screen type and battery estimate. If most hours are docked, prioritize supported TV features and exclusive software.
- Price the complete setup locally. Include the console, microSD Express storage, camera, controllers and upgrade packs you would actually buy.
- Decide what happens to the old console. Keep it for unsupported games, a second room or family multiplayer, or sell it only after confirming your saves, accessories and essential software are covered.
Waiting is sensible when your only motivation is curiosity and no must-play Switch 2 software is available to you. Buying is easier to defend when a specific game, storage problem or feature solves a problem you already have.
Bottom line for original Switch owners
Switch 2 is a strong generational upgrade in storage, screen size, new software access and supported TV features, but it is not automatically the best value for every original Switch owner. Standard-Switch owners who want exclusives and play docked or on a larger handheld display will notice the benefits most. Handheld-first players who value endurance, OLED owners satisfied with their screen, and anyone facing a high local price should wait unless a particular game or feature changes the calculation. Verify your games, accessories and regional price first; then buy only if the improvements match how you actually play.
