Is Nintendo Switch Sports Worth Buying for Its Flying Mode? What the Game Actually Includes

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Short answer: no. Nintendo Switch Sports is not listed as having a flying mode. Nintendo’s official lineup names eight sports—Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara—and none is a flight activity. That conclusion is based on Nintendo’s published feature list rather than a separate Nintendo statement using the exact words “no flying mode.” If flying is the reason you want to buy, skip the game for that purpose. If you want motion-controlled sports, local multiplayer, or supported online play, it may still be a sensible Nintendo Switch game.

Does Nintendo Switch Sports have a flying mode?

Nintendo’s current official game information does not list a flying mode, airplane activity, pilot challenge, or Pilotwings-style sport. Its feature list contains eight activities: Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara. Because flying is absent from that complete published lineup, the practical buying answer is that Nintendo Switch Sports should not be purchased for a flying activity.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

This is an inference from Nintendo’s official list, not a quotation of Nintendo saying “there is no flying mode.” That distinction matters: features can change through software updates, and a publisher’s omission is different from an explicit denial. For the currently described product, however, Nintendo gives buyers eight named sports and no flight mode to select.

The phrase “flying mode” can also mean different things in gaming. Some people use it for free flight, aircraft controls, a gliding minigame, or a special movement option. Nothing in Nintendo’s listed sports identifies any of those. The game is built around sports motions, not aerial exploration or piloting.

What sports are actually included?

Nintendo presents the product as a Nintendo Switch game that brings sports to life through motion-oriented play. The official lineup is:

Sport Listed by Nintendo? What that means for a flying-mode buyer
Basketball Yes A court sport; not a flight activity. Nintendo marks it as supported through a software update.
Golf Yes A swing-based sport with courses and online Survival Golf; not aerial gameplay.
Soccer Yes Uses foot-oriented motion controls, with a Leg Strap involved in some play.
Volleyball Yes A net sport using motion input; no flying mode is identified.
Bowling Yes A motion-controlled lane sport; no aircraft or free-flight system.
Tennis Yes A racket sport; no flight activity is listed.
Badminton Yes A racket sport; no flight activity is listed.
Chambara Yes A sword-fighting sport; no flight activity is listed.

Basketball and Golf carry software-update notes on Nintendo’s feature information. Those labels indicate additions to the game’s sports collection, not hidden flight content. The lineup is therefore the most useful way to set expectations before paying for the game.

What was added in the Golf update?

Nintendo announced Golf as a free update on November 29, 2022. The update added 21 holes from the Wii Sports series and introduced online Survival Golf for up to eight players. In a compact form, the relevant figures are 21 holes — Nintendo, 2022 and up to eight players in online Survival Golf — Nintendo, 2022.

Golf can make the package more attractive to someone seeking another motion-controlled sport, especially if they remember the earlier Wii Sports courses. It does not change the answer about flying: golf is a ground-based sports activity, and Nintendo’s announcement describes holes and Survival Golf rather than aircraft, gliding, or aerial traversal.

The Golf update is also a reminder to distinguish confirmed additions from speculation. Nintendo has publicly described Golf and Basketball as update-related content, but no announced flying expansion is identified in the official product material. Treat an unlisted mode as unavailable unless Nintendo adds it to the official product information.

Who should consider buying Nintendo Switch Sports?

The game makes sense when your priority is a group of accessible sports that use Joy-Con motion controls. Nintendo describes play both in person and online, so it can fit a household that wants short competitive sessions, a party game, or a way to play familiar sports without a traditional button-heavy control scheme.

It is a weaker fit when you want one deep simulation, a campaign centered on a single athlete, or an exploration game with aviation mechanics. The product’s identity is a collection of sports. Its value depends on how often you expect to return to several of those activities, not on an unlisted mode.

Buy it for a sports collection

Consider the game if at least one of these describes your intended use:

  • You want several motion-controlled sports in one Nintendo Switch game rather than a dedicated flight title.
  • You expect to play locally with family or friends and prefer quick matches to a long single-player campaign.
  • Golf, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, or Chambara covers the activities you actually want.
  • You are prepared to meet the separate requirements for online play when you want to compete over the internet.

Skip it as a flying purchase

Do not buy Nintendo Switch Sports on the assumption that a plane, glider, pilot challenge, or free-flight mode is hidden behind an update, a controller setting, or the Leg Strap. Nintendo’s documented feature list does not support that expectation. If flight is your only reason for buying, the game does not match the stated use case.

Local play and online play are different decisions

Nintendo says the game supports playing in person or online. Local play is the straightforward option for people sharing a room and compatible controllers. You can decide whether the sports themselves are appealing without adding an online membership to the setup.

  • Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online

Online features have additional requirements. Nintendo specifies all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • A Nintendo Account.
  • Internet access.

Nintendo also notes that membership availability varies by country. Do not assume that a service or online feature is available in every region, and do not treat an advertised online mode as meaning that no subscription is needed. The exact subscription price is not established here, so check Nintendo’s current information for your country before budgeting.

Online Survival Golf is the clearest quantified example in the official product information: it supports up to eight players. That figure applies to the named online Survival Golf mode, not automatically to every sport or every way of playing the game.

Controllers, handheld use, and the Leg Strap

Nintendo Support describes several control arrangements, with the appropriate configuration depending on the sport. The documented options include paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con, and Joy-Con used with the Leg Strap. Nintendo also states that Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible and that the software does not support handheld mode.

Those requirements affect the practical cost and convenience of the game. A player who owns only a Pro Controller cannot use it as a substitute for the supported Joy-Con setup. Someone planning handheld-only play should also understand that the game is not designed to run in handheld mode according to Nintendo’s support information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the Leg Strap does

The Leg Strap is associated with some Soccer gameplay. Nintendo says it is required for some Soccer play, and Nintendo Support explains how to switch to Leg-Strap Mode. It is an input accessory for the documented Soccer experience, not an aviation accessory and not a route to an undisclosed flying mode.

Because support configurations vary by sport, check Nintendo’s current setup guidance for the specific activity and number of players you plan to use. Hardware details can change with software or support revisions, so a current check is sensible if you are buying extra controllers or accessories specifically for this game.

What does “worth buying” mean in this case?

There are three separate value questions. First, does the software contain the activity you want? For a flying-mode buyer, the answer is no based on Nintendo’s eight-sport list. Second, will you use enough of the listed sports to justify the purchase? Someone who regularly plays Golf, Bowling, Tennis, or Soccer may see a broader value than someone interested in only one unlisted activity. Third, can your setup run the modes you intend to use? Joy-Con requirements, the lack of handheld support, and the Nintendo Switch Online requirement can change the total outlay beyond the game itself.

That last point is why a low store price should not be treated as the whole cost. Online play may require a separate membership, and some Soccer activities may require access to the Leg Strap. If you already own compatible Joy-Con and plan local play, there may be fewer additional requirements. If you own only a Pro Controller or want handheld-only play, the software’s supported configuration does not match that plan.

A practical buying checklist

Use this sequence before ordering the game or opening a digital listing:

  • Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
  • Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
  • Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries
  • Unlock new costumes and choose to play with motion or buttons on NSW
  1. Name the activity you expect to play most. If your answer is flying, stop: that activity is not in Nintendo’s listed lineup. If your answer is Golf, Bowling, Soccer, Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball, Basketball, or Chambara, continue.
  2. Decide whether you will play locally or online. Local play avoids the online-membership requirement. Online play requires a Nintendo Account, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and internet access.
  3. Check your controllers. Confirm that you have the Joy-Con arrangement required for the sport and number of players. Do not plan around a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller or handheld-only use.
  4. Identify whether Soccer’s Leg Strap mode matters. If you want the Soccer activities that require it, verify that you have the supported strap and know how to switch to Leg-Strap Mode.
  5. Verify regional online availability. Nintendo says membership availability varies by country, so check your region rather than relying on a listing written for another market.
  6. Buy the product for its confirmed content. A legitimate product description should present it as the Nintendo Switch sports collection, not as a flight game.

How to read a store listing without being misled

The honest product phrase for a physical or digital search is “Nintendo Switch Sports Nintendo Switch game.” That identifies the game itself and matches Nintendo’s description. A listing that adds “flying mode” should be treated cautiously unless it points to a current Nintendo feature announcement that names such a mode.

Do not infer a flight feature from screenshots showing a ball in the air, a character jumping, or motion-control instructions. Sports naturally include airborne objects and animated movement; those visual moments are not the same as piloting or free flight. Likewise, the presence of a Leg Strap says something about Soccer input, not about aviation content.

Current street price, stock status, and review consensus are not established by Nintendo’s official material. Prices vary by region, retailer, physical versus digital format, and promotions. Compare those details at the time of purchase, but keep them separate from the feature question: a discount does not add a flying mode, and a higher price does not indicate extra flight content.

What is confirmed, and what is not?

Nintendo’s official game page confirms the product identity, the eight-sport lineup, and the availability of in-person and online play. Nintendo’s Golf announcement, dated November 29, 2022, confirms the 21-hole addition and online Survival Golf for up to eight players. Nintendo Support supplies the practical controller information: supported Joy-Con arrangements vary by sport, Pro Controllers are not compatible, handheld mode is not supported, and some Soccer play uses Leg-Strap Mode.

Those sources do not establish a current retail price, a universal review score, or a future flight expansion. They also do not make the Leg Strap a general-purpose movement accessory. Keeping those boundaries clear prevents a store description, a screenshot, or a wish-list discussion from being mistaken for a confirmed feature.

Common assumptions that lead to disappointment

“A sports game must have a flying minigame”

There is no basis for that assumption in Nintendo’s published lineup. The game’s sports are explicitly named, and none is a flying discipline.

“The Golf update might be an aerial mode”

The Golf update is documented as 21 holes from the Wii Sports series plus online Survival Golf for up to eight players. Those details describe golf content, not flight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The Leg Strap unlocks extra movement modes”

Nintendo connects the Leg Strap to some Soccer play. Support instructions for Leg-Strap Mode do not identify any flying activity.

“Online means anyone can play without extra requirements”

Nintendo lists a Nintendo Account, active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and internet access for online features. Availability also varies by country.

“Any Switch controller should work”

Nintendo Support says Pro Controllers are not compatible and handheld mode is not supported. The documented configurations use Joy-Con, with the exact arrangement depending on the sport.

Is it worth buying for you?

For a flying-mode buyer, no. The activity motivating the purchase is not in Nintendo’s official eight-sport lineup, so the game does not satisfy that requirement.

For a motion-sports buyer, possibly. The package offers Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara, with local and online options subject to hardware, account, internet, and membership requirements. Golf’s 2022 update adds 21 holes and online Survival Golf for up to eight players, which may increase the appeal for people who want variety rather than a single focused sport.

Make the decision from the confirmed content: choose the game for the sports you will actually play, the people you expect to play with, and the Joy-Con setup you can support. Do not count an unlisted flying mode as part of the product’s value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any airplane, glider, or Pilotwings-style mode in Nintendo Switch Sports?

Nintendo’s official lineup lists Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara. It does not list an airplane, glider, or free-flight activity, so do not buy the game expecting one.

Can a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller be used?

Nintendo Support says Pro Controllers are not compatible. The documented configurations use paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con, or Joy-Con with the Leg Strap, depending on the sport.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Nintendo Switch Sports work in handheld mode?

Nintendo Support says the software does not support handheld mode. Plan to use the supported Joy-Con setup instead.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online?

You need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account, and internet access for online features. Nintendo notes that membership availability varies by country. Local play does not add that online-membership requirement.

How much Golf content was added?

Nintendo announced Golf on November 29, 2022, with 21 holes from the Wii Sports series and online Survival Golf for up to eight players.

Is the Leg Strap required for every Soccer match?

No. Nintendo says it is required for some Soccer play. Nintendo Support explains how to switch to Leg-Strap Mode; the accessory does not provide a flying mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I search for when buying the game?

“Nintendo Switch Sports Nintendo Switch game” is the accurate product phrase. Be cautious of listings that advertise a flying mode without a current Nintendo announcement naming it.

Is a current price or review score available here?

Nintendo’s official product and support information does not establish a universal current street price or review consensus. Check your local retailer and Nintendo’s regional store at the time of purchase.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Nintendo Switch Sports is not a flying game. Nintendo’s official lineup contains eight sports and no listed flight activity. Buy it for its motion-controlled sports, local play, or supported online modes—not for an airplane, glider, or hidden flying mode.
