Yes—Oblivion Remastered is worth considering if you want to play an official, released version of The Elder Scrolls IV now. Skyblivion is a different proposition: a volunteer-made PC remake for Skyrim Special Edition that is not yet released and whose team targets 2026. Choose the remaster for availability and an official visual and gameplay update; consider waiting for Skyblivion if you own its required games and want a community-led reimagining of Cyrodiil.
How do Oblivion Remastered and Skyblivion differ?
They are not two editions of the same product. Bethesda’s remaster updates the 2006 game, while retaining its underlying gameplay and world logic. Skyblivion is a mod project that aims to recreate Oblivion within Skyrim Special Edition. One is available to play; the other is still in development.

What does Oblivion Remastered change?
Bethesda describes Oblivion as “the heart and soul” of the remaster and says the original game’s logic runs underneath the updated presentation. Unreal Engine 5 provides the visual overhaul. Bethesda also lists sprinting, remade locomotion and character models, recreated combat animations and effects, updated third-person play, a redesigned leveling system inspired by Oblivion and Skyrim, an updated interface, and newly recorded dialogue. These are the publisher’s descriptions of the remaster’s changes, not a claim that every system has been rebuilt from scratch.
For players who want the familiar game with updated visuals and selected mechanical and interface changes, that makes the remaster the practical choice. It remains the official release rather than a community remake.

What is Skyblivion aiming to offer?
Skyblivion’s team describes the project as a volunteer-made remake for Skyrim Special Edition. Its FAQ says the aim includes Oblivion’s weapons, armor, quests, locations, and NPCs, alongside redesigned dungeons, Oblivion realms, and exterior worldspace. The project’s press kit also lists classic class and attribute systems, Oblivion-style lockpicking, NPC disposition, and over 223 quests. These are project-stated goals and features, not independently verified features of a released build.
The team says Skyblivion and its expansions will be free, but the mod is not a standalone game: its FAQ requires ownership of both Skyrim Special Edition and Oblivion GOTY Deluxe, through Steam or GOG. The team says compatibility with physical copies is being worked on but is not guaranteed.

When will Skyblivion release?
The Skyblivion FAQ currently gives a 2026 target without specifying a quarter. In a December 3, 2025 delay announcement, the team said the target had moved from the end of 2025 to 2026. It cited remaining work on Imperial City assets and interiors, navmesh and quest implementation, plus polish, balancing, testing, and bug fixing. That post also reported that the world map was complete, quest dungeons had been remade, and core 3D assets were essentially finished at that time; it should not be read as a live progress report for later in 2026.
The team says Bethesda’s official remaster will not end Skyblivion’s development and may provide useful feedback to the community project. It also addresses why the team will not simply port Skyblivion to the remaster in its FAQ.
