Yes—if you enjoy large, demanding logic games and are comfortable leaving a puzzle unsolved while you learn its rules. Thekla, Inc.’s Order of the Sinking Star is a single-player puzzle adventure with four connected worlds, story clues, nonlinear exploration and more than 1,000 handcrafted puzzles. Its scale and interlocking systems are unusual strengths; its main warning is that the game is built to challenge persistent players rather than provide a quick, gently guided path.
The game released on October 8, 2026. It is available on PC through Steam, Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5. The evidence supports calling it expansive and replayable through optional content and route flexibility, but not through a confirmed New Game Plus mode, randomized puzzles or substantially different repeat campaigns.

What kind of game is Order of the Sinking Star?
Order of the Sinking Star is a story-bearing puzzle adventure directed by Jonathan Blow. It is not an action game with occasional brainteasers. The central activity is learning how each world works, testing those rules in a safe situation, and then combining them to solve increasingly complicated problems.

Each region introduces its own playable hero, movement rules, hazards and puzzle language. Story clues are distributed through exploration rather than presented only as a straight sequence of cinematic scenes. The official Steam description says the worlds and mechanics eventually meet, so the later game is not simply four unrelated campaigns placed side by side.

The publisher and developer describe more than 1,000 handcrafted puzzles. That is a developer-published figure, not an independently audited count, but it indicates the intended scale: this is closer to a long-form puzzle world than to a short collection of riddles.
How the four puzzle foundations work
The game grows from four named puzzle traditions. Understanding these foundations explains both the early learning curve and why the later areas can feel dramatically more complex.
Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes
This system asks you to lay stepping paths by throwing stones. The important skill is not merely reaching the next platform; it is predicting how a placement changes the route that remains available. A move that solves the immediate gap can remove a useful landing position later, so solutions depend on planning a sequence rather than reacting one throw at a time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMirror Isles
Mirror Isles is built around swapping places with reflections. Position, timing and the relationship between the character and the reflected image all matter. A reflection is therefore part of the level’s logic, not a decorative copy. Puzzles can require arranging the two positions so that a later swap opens a route or avoids a hazard.
Promesst 1–3
These are grid puzzles organized around beams of light. You work with the geometry of a grid and the way beams travel through it, solving for a valid arrangement rather than simply finding a hidden object. The numbered entries indicate a family of related systems that can be learned separately before their assumptions are challenged by later combinations.

Heroes of Sokoban 1–3
This foundation uses distinct characters with different movement and pushing rules. Anyone familiar with Sokoban-style box pushing will recognize the danger of committing a block to a position from which it cannot be recovered. The multiple heroes add another layer: a solution may depend on which character performs a push, how that character moves, and whether the resulting arrangement still works for someone else.
Why the systems become harder together
Jonathan Blow told MonsterVine on May 14, 2026, that he selected mechanics that could “come together and dovetail nicely to create new, interesting situations.” That design goal explains the game’s difficulty better than a simple puzzle count does. You are not only learning four rule sets; you are learning which assumptions remain true when one world’s mechanic interacts with another’s.
Blow later described the goal as bringing these systems together and exploring “this large possibility space that results.” In practical terms, a puzzle may ask you to reason about movement, reflection, pushing and light geometry at the same time. The game’s most distinctive content comes from those interactions, not from any one introductory mechanic.
How difficult is it?
Order of the Sinking Star should be approached as a brain-intensive game that expects curiosity, experimentation and persistence. The official description says puzzles build on one another and reward players who investigate the rules. Community users have applied Steam’s “Difficult” tag, but that tag is a player label rather than an objective rating or a standardized difficulty scale.
Launch coverage includes both praise for cunning design and descriptions such as “merciless” for the mechanics. Those are individual critics’ reactions, not a universal measurement. The safest expectation is that many players will encounter deliberate walls: situations where the correct next step is not obvious and where progress requires forming a new model of the rules.

Who is most likely to enjoy the challenge?
- Puzzle enthusiasts: You enjoy inferring rules from examples instead of receiving every rule in a tutorial.
- Players who like systemic games: You find satisfaction in combining mechanics and discovering consequences the designers did not state directly.
- Patient explorers: You can leave a puzzle, investigate another branch and return with a better idea.
Who should be cautious?
- Players seeking a fast story: The game’s narrative is attached to exploration and puzzle progress, so difficult sections can slow the pace considerably.
- Players who want constant hints: The cited material does not establish a specific hint system or adjustable difficulty settings. Do not buy it expecting a guaranteed gentle mode.
- Players who dislike irreversible-looking mistakes: Pushes, placements and route choices can require careful planning, even when the larger world lets you walk away and try something else.
Practical ways to handle a difficult puzzle
- Write down the rule you think you learned. Separate a confirmed rule from a guess. This prevents a failed experiment from becoming a false assumption about the whole world.
- Change one variable at a time. In a combined puzzle, alter the character position, reflection, push or beam arrangement individually so you can identify what actually caused the result.
- Look for a reversible test. Before committing a block or spending a resource, test the same interaction in a less constrained area when possible.
- Leave deliberately. The nonlinear structure is part of the intended solution to being stuck. Another region may teach a concept that makes the original puzzle legible.
- Return with a new question. “What am I missing?” is less useful than a precise question such as “Can this reflection occupy the same role after the swap?”
How progression and exploration work
The overworld is nonlinear. The official September 23, 2026 news post describes a central hub with no single right way to proceed and four paths branching into the regions. You can choose among routes, roam at your own pace, leave a puzzle unfinished and revisit worlds later.
This structure changes the meaning of difficulty. Hitting a puzzle you cannot solve does not necessarily mean you have reached a hard mandatory gate. It may be an optional challenge, a lesson intended for a later visit or a problem whose missing insight is introduced somewhere else. Conversely, freedom does not make the puzzles easy; it gives you more ways to look for the knowledge you need.
A typical progress loop
- Enter a region and observe its rules. Early puzzles establish what the character, hazard or object can do.
- Follow a branch until the mechanic becomes unfamiliar. This is where the game starts asking whether you understood the rule or merely copied a pattern.
- Mark or remember a blocked challenge. The game allows you to leave rather than forcing every puzzle into one uninterrupted sequence.
- Explore another path. A different region may provide a new mechanic or a contrasting example.
- Return to optional and previously blocked puzzles. Completionists can use the open structure to clean up challenges after the main route is clearer.
The official descriptions emphasize secrets as well as the main progression. That makes exploration meaningful even when you are not immediately advancing the story.
How long is the game?
There is no established average completion time. The available figures describe different scopes and come with important qualifications.
| Published figure | What it refers to | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| More than 1,000 handcrafted puzzles | Thekla, Inc.’s official Steam listing and 2026 game news | A description of content volume, not a promise that every player will solve every puzzle. |
| “Hundreds of hours” of unique gameplay | Thekla, Inc.’s official 2026 news post | Promotional wording for the game’s overall scale; it is not an average playtime measurement. |
| “Around 500 hours” to complete everything | Jonathan Blow, reported by PC Gamer in 2025 | A qualified completionist estimate. Blow said it was “not a promise of any kind,” and the game can be completed without exploring every part of the overworld. |
The useful conclusion is that the game is unusually large, but 500 hours is not a normal-play requirement. A player who follows the main progression and skips optional challenges should finish much sooner than someone attempting every puzzle and secret. Because the routes are nonlinear, two players can spend very different amounts of time while both making legitimate progress.

Is it replayable?
Yes, in the sense that the game offers optional challenges, multiple routes through its overworld and reasons to revisit regions. You can take a different path through the hub, postpone puzzles and return after learning more mechanics. That creates substantial room for a second pass through missed content or a completionist cleanup run.
The evidence does not establish a distinct New Game Plus mode, randomized puzzles, procedural worlds or materially different repeat campaigns. It would therefore be inaccurate to promise the kind of replayability associated with branching narrative endings or a roguelike restart loop.
| Replayability type | Supported by the available information? | What it means here |
|---|---|---|
| Route flexibility | Yes | The central hub branches into four paths, with no single required order. |
| Optional content | Yes | Secrets and additional puzzles can be skipped, then revisited. |
| Completionist revisits | Yes | Players can return to earlier worlds after learning later systems. |
| Randomized or procedural replay | Not established | No sourced evidence shows that puzzles change between runs. |
| New Game Plus or alternate campaign | Not established | No sourced evidence confirms a separate repeat-play mode. |
For most players, the strongest replay value is not replaying the same solved sequence. It is discovering how much of the world was optional, then using your improved understanding to tackle challenges you intentionally left behind.

What critics and the developer are saying
Launch-period coverage is enthusiastic but varied in wording. A publisher news roundup reproduces Shacknews calling the game “a masterpiece” with a 10/10, GameSpot describing its puzzle design as “impressive, cunning, and devious” with an 8/10, and GamingTrend praising “meticulous, mysterious and merciless mechanics” with a 9/10. These are attributed opinions from individual outlets, not objective scores that settle whether the game suits you.
The more consistent thread is that the design is ambitious and interconnected. That matches Blow’s explanation that the project was built around bringing separate worlds together. If you enjoy discovering a system’s boundaries, the same ambition is likely to feel rewarding. If you prefer puzzles that are short, self-contained and quickly explained, the same structure may feel exhausting.
Final decision: is Order of the Sinking Star worth playing?
Order of the Sinking Star is worth playing for puzzle fans who want a substantial, exploratory challenge rather than a casual sequence of unrelated riddles. Its four foundational systems, later combinations, nonlinear hub and huge optional puzzle count give it a scope few puzzle adventures attempt.
Buy it with realistic expectations: difficulty is a defining feature, the official material does not confirm adjustable settings or a universal hint experience, and the “around 500 hours” figure is a non-binding completionist estimate rather than an average. Its replayability comes from routes, secrets and revisits—not from a confirmed alternate campaign or procedural mode.
If that trade-off sounds appealing, the game’s central promise is clear: learn the rules, combine them, and keep exploring until the world’s apparently impossible situations become understandable.
