Is the game still called Overwatch 2?
Blizzard’s current official game page brands the live service as Overwatch. Players and storefronts may still use “Overwatch 2” because that is the name associated with the game’s launch and the sequel-era client. The change in branding does not turn the game into a paid release: the base game remains free to play.

The Steam amounts are examples of a specific 2026 Season 5 listing, not permanent prices or a guarantee that another platform will show the same total. Store pages can change when a season ends, a bundle is replaced, or regional pricing and taxes are applied.
How the Battle Pass works
Every season has a free Battle Pass track. Blizzard’s Battle Pass explainer also describes a Premium Battle Pass that players can purchase with 1,000 Overwatch Coins; that published example equated the cost to US$10 in 2022. The dollar equivalent is a dated reference rather than a promise that every storefront’s current coin pack or tax-inclusive checkout will total exactly $10.

The free track is available to everyone who plays the season. It provides the no-cost progression path, so you do not need to buy a pass to earn seasonal rewards through normal play.
Premium track
The Premium Battle Pass is an upgrade to the seasonal reward path. Its value is primarily additional progression and cosmetic rewards, not access to a paid version of the game. If you skip the purchase, you can continue playing and use the free track.

Coins and seasonal timing
Coins are a separate optional purchase and can be used for eligible premium content. Blizzard’s developer update says that, beginning with Season 10, players can earn coins through both the free and premium Battle Pass tracks. That means a player may accumulate some currency through seasonal progression, while the amount needed for a particular purchase depends on the item’s price and the player’s existing balance.
Because passes and bundles are tied to seasons, buying decisions are time-sensitive. A bundle shown in a store today may be removed or replaced later, and a future season can use different contents or prices.
Are new heroes locked behind the Battle Pass?
No. Blizzard states that heroes no longer need to be unlocked through the Battle Pass. That change separates hero access from the decision to buy premium progression: the Premium Battle Pass is optional, while the hero roster is not presented as a permanent paid requirement.
Blizzard also says that coins can be earned on both free and premium Battle Pass tracks starting with Season 10. These systems concern how players earn or spend currency; they do not change the $0 entry price of the base game.
What does “free to play” include on each platform?
The launch platform list covers Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. On any of those supported systems, the game itself has no purchase price. You still need the platform’s account, an internet connection, and hardware that meets the platform’s requirements.

Console online-subscription question
Whether a console platform requires a separate online multiplayer subscription can depend on the platform’s current policy, account status, and how the game is classified in that storefront. The established pricing information does not support one universal PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass requirement, so check the current product page for your console and region before installing. Do not confuse a platform subscription with an Overwatch purchase: a subscription, if your platform requires one for your circumstances, is not a fee charged for the base game itself.
PC storefronts
On PC, the store page identifies the game as free-to-play with in-app purchases. A store may display the game at $0 while separately listing paid coin packs, passes, and bundles. The price shown at checkout is the relevant amount for your account, country, currency, and tax rules.

The observed Steam Season 5 listing for 2026 showed a $9.99 Starter Pack and a $39.99 Ultimate Battle Pass Bundle. A bundle may combine several premium benefits, but the name and contents tell you more than the headline price. Read the itemized description, check whether the rewards apply to the current season only, and compare its contents with buying only the pass or only the cosmetics you want.
How to check the real price before paying
- Open the official game listing or in-game shop on the platform where you will play.
- Confirm that the listing is for your platform, account region, and current season.
- Look for the separate entries for the free game, Premium Battle Pass, coin packs, and bundles.
- Open the purchase details to see the currency amount, included rewards, expiration or seasonal limitations, and tax treatment.
- Proceed only after the final checkout screen shows the total you intend to pay.
This process matters because a historical price, a PC storefront price, and a tax-exclusive regional display can all differ from the amount charged to you.

You must buy skins to compete

A Battle Pass unlocks heroes permanently
