Phantom Blade Zero is best described as a fast, wuxia-inspired action RPG with hack-and-slash roots and Soulslike-adjacent features. It borrows ideas associated with Soulslikes—boss-pattern learning, parries, rest and fast-travel conventions, and some deliberate encounter design—but its stated identity is rapid, cinematic kung-fu action built around weapon choice and expressive combos. Calling it simply a Soulslike gives the wrong impression of its pace and priorities.
The game remains unreleased at the time of the available official information, so previews describe specific builds rather than the finished campaign. Difficulty behavior, progression details and launch information should therefore be read with the dates and sources attached below.

The short answer: Soulslike-adjacent, not a conventional Soulslike
There is no universally enforced definition of “Soulslike,” which is why the label can be useful and still incomplete here. Phantom Blade Zero’s official PlayStation description calls it a “dark wuxia action RPG.” Steam’s player-defined tags include “Souls-like,” “Hack and Slash,” “Action RPG,” “Wuxia” and “Fast-Paced.” Those descriptions are not mutually exclusive: they identify different parts of the same game.
S-Game’s own 2023 explanation places its inspirations closer to character-action and arcade-style martial-arts games than to slow, defensive action. The studio cited Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden as reference points, contrasted their speed with the more strategic pace associated with Soulslikes and Monster Hunter, and said it wanted the sleek, spectacular movement of 1990s kung-fu cinema. That statement is the clearest guide to the intended combat identity.

A GamesRadar+ hands-on preview nevertheless found Soulslike-adjacent conventions, including rest and fast travel. PC Gamer’s interview with S-Game co-founder and combat director Qianli Ma also describes fixed boss combos on normal difficulty, which players can learn through repeated attempts. Those are meaningful similarities, but they do not establish that the entire game follows a Soulslike formula.
What kind of game is Phantom Blade Zero?
A dark wuxia action RPG
The setting is the Wulin, a fictional martial-arts world presented through a dark wuxia lens. Wuxia usually centers on wandering swordsmen, rival schools, honor, betrayal and heightened martial-arts movement; Phantom Blade Zero adds a punk-fantasy edge that S-Game calls “Kungfupunk.” The result is not historical realism. It is a stylized world where traditional swordplay and fantastical technology or aesthetics can share the same frame.
PlayStation’s story description identifies the protagonist as Soul, a swordsman with only sixty-six days left to live. He is framed for murdering his master and hunted across the Wulin. The August 2026 overview says side quests can open different story paths, suggesting that optional content may affect how the narrative unfolds rather than serving only as combat detours.
Why the hack-and-slash comparison matters
“Hack and slash” can mean many things, but in this case it points to speed, chaining attacks and fighting several opponents through continuous motion. S-Game says the combat should support elaborate chains with limited button-mashing. The PlayStation page promises seamless combos that are easy to learn and rewarding to master. Those are developer descriptions, not independent performance measurements, but they explain why the studio resists reducing the game to a Soulslike template.
The animation philosophy reinforces that goal. In an official PlayStation Blog post dated May 24, 2023, S-Game said, “Combat moves in Phantom Blade Zero have to be made with handcrafted animation, because motion capturing can’t do it justice.” The emphasis is on authored choreography and readable, cinematic martial-arts movement rather than simply accumulating statistics or trading slow blows.
How the combat compares with a Soulslike
| Combat question | What current information supports | What that means for the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Pace | S-Game describes rapid, cinematic kung-fu action and cites character-action inspirations. | It should feel faster and more combo-driven than the slowest, most defensive Soulslikes. |
| Combos | The official page describes seamless combos that are easy to learn and rewarding to master; S-Game says it wants elaborate chains with limited button-mashing. | Execution and timing are central, rather than merely selecting a safe attack and waiting. |
| Parries and dodges | A recent preview reports reasonably long parry windows on normal difficulty and describes Soulslike-adjacent combat conventions. | Defensive timing is part of the comparison, although the final game’s complete move set is not established. |
| Boss learning | Qianli Ma described fixed boss combos on normal difficulty in a reported build; repeated fights let players learn those sequences. | Pattern recognition resembles Soulslikes, while the faster response system can also resemble fighting games. |
| Overall identity | Official materials call it a dark wuxia action RPG, while Steam users also apply “Souls-like” and “Hack and Slash.” | The Soulslike label describes selected systems, not the whole design. |
That distinction is important for expectations. Someone looking for methodical stamina management, highly constrained attack strings and a single punishing difficulty may find the description misleading. Someone who wants demanding bosses but also elaborate martial-arts strings, rapid movement and cinematic finishers is closer to the game’s stated target.

How difficult is Phantom Blade Zero?
Adjustable difficulty is officially listed
PlayStation lists “Adjustable Difficulty (Basic).” Its explanation says players can reduce the overall challenge by selecting an alternative preset. The same official page lists control reminders, tutorial reminders, pausing and manual saving. Those options indicate that the game is not presented as enforcing one unchangeable difficulty level.

A recent GamesRadar+ hands-on preview played an early section on normal difficulty and found it fairly forgiving. The reviewer reported reasonably long parry windows, the ability to survive several hits before healing and enough combo power to overwhelm ordinary field enemies. The preview also warned that larger foes should not be treated casually. This is an early, limited impression, not a complete-game assessment, and it should not be converted into a claim that every encounter is easy.
What extreme difficulty is supposed to change
PC Gamer quoted Qianli Ma discussing a boss in normal and extreme modes. On normal, Ma said the boss uses fixed combos: after enough attempts, players can identify and learn the sequences. For extreme difficulty, he described an artificial-intelligence model inspired by fighting-game state machines that reacts to the situation and to the player’s outcomes. That account applies to the reported boss and build, not automatically to every boss or to the whole campaign.
Ma’s explanation suggests two different kinds of challenge. Normal mode can reward memorization and disciplined repetition. Extreme mode may demand adaptation because the boss can respond to what is happening instead of replaying exactly the same sequence. Until the full release is available, it is safest to treat that as a stated design goal rather than a guarantee about every encounter.
Weapons, builds and progression
Two weapon categories
Soul can unlock more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges, according to S-Game founder and CEO Soulframe Liang’s August 2026 PlayStation Blog post. The official PlayStation game page separately says 30-plus primary weapons and 20-plus Phantom Edges. Because those official pages give different secondary-weapon totals, the later dated figure is the better one to quote when precision is needed; otherwise, “dozens of weapons” avoids implying a settled final count.

Why weapon variety changes the genre discussion
Soulslike comparisons often focus on character builds, but Phantom Blade Zero appears to place equal weight on how a weapon changes the feel of a combo. A large primary-weapon roster and a separate Phantom Edge category could let players tailor both damage and choreography. That is consistent with the studio’s emphasis on expression: the attraction is not only surviving a boss, but learning how to turn a weapon’s moves into a reliable sequence.
Accessories and summons may provide additional customization, yet their exact effects and limits have not been fully detailed in the cited material. Treat them as confirmed systems, not as evidence of a particular loot or stat model.
Does it have Soulslike rest, travel and progression systems?
GamesRadar+ reported rest and fast-travel features in its hands-on preview, which is why the Soulslike comparison is not arbitrary. Those conventions usually divide exploration into manageable stretches and give players a place to prepare before returning to dangerous areas. However, the available official information does not establish the details that often define a Soulslike’s progression loop.
There is no confirmed account here of death penalties, stamina rules, checkpoint economies, corpse retrieval, experience loss or the exact consequences of resting. Do not assume those systems exist merely because rest and fast travel were observed. The evidence supports saying that the game uses some familiar structural conventions, not that it reproduces a specific Soulslike formula.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Setting, story and the “Kungfupunk” label
Phantom Blade Zero’s world is the Wulin, described in the August 2026 overview as a dark wuxia setting. Soul’s sixty-six-day lifespan gives the story a built-in deadline, while the accusation that he murdered his master supplies the immediate pursuit. His journey is therefore both personal and kinetic: he must survive long enough to uncover what happened while being hunted through a world of rival martial forces.
S-Game’s “Kungfupunk” term describes the blend of traditional martial arts and punk fantasy. It is useful because “wuxia” alone might make readers expect a more conventional period setting. Here, the visual and narrative language deliberately combines classical swordsmanship with a more aggressive, stylized fantasy atmosphere.

What to expect if you are choosing it for the Soulslike elements
If you want boss-pattern learning
The available descriptions support that expectation, especially on normal difficulty. Ma’s comments about fixed combos and GamesRadar+’s account of parry timing both point toward learning an opponent’s behavior through repeated encounters.
If you want a slow, highly defensive game
Set expectations carefully. The studio repeatedly emphasizes speed, seamless attacks and cinematic choreography. Even when a boss follows learnable patterns, the intended response may be a rapid counter or combo rather than a long defensive exchange.
If you are worried about an uncompromising difficulty wall
PlayStation lists an adjustable basic difficulty, and the previewed normal mode was described as forgiving in its opening section. That does not mean every boss will be easy, but it does mean the game is not officially presented as having only one mandatory challenge setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you care about experimentation
More than 30 main weapons, 25 Phantom Edges in the later dated official count, upgrades, accessories and summons indicate substantial room to try different approaches. The precise build rules remain undisclosed, so avoid assuming that every weapon supports the same role or that all combinations are equally effective.
Bottom line on the genre label
Use “Soulslike” as a comparison, not as the complete answer. Phantom Blade Zero adopts recognizable elements—learnable boss patterns, parry-focused defense, rest and fast travel, and an adjustable challenge structure—but its core pitch is a fast, stylish wuxia action RPG influenced by hack-and-slash and character-action games. The most accurate shorthand is Soulslike-adjacent kung-fu action RPG: close enough to explain certain systems, broad enough to preserve the game’s actual identity.
