Phantom Blade Zero is best described as a fast wuxia action RPG with Soulslike-adjacent features—not as an unambiguous Soulslike. S-Game has framed its goal around elaborate, fast kung-fu combat, while a developer interview identifies learnable boss patterns on normal difficulty as one Soulslike element. The game also offers named difficulty modes, a large weapon arsenal, and side quests that can open story paths.
Why Phantom Blade Zero is not simply a Soulslike
“Soulslike” can describe a cluster of design traits rather than a universally agreed genre boundary. S-Game’s own framing points elsewhere: in a 2023 PlayStation Blog design article, the studio contrasted the speed and broad move sets of games such as Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden with the more strategic action approach associated with Soulslikes and Monster Hunter. The team said that slower approach did not convey the action spectacle it wanted, and described building a controller-friendly way to create elaborate move chains.

That does not rule out Soulslike influence or resemblance. Combat director Qianli Ma told PC Gamer that a boss on normal difficulty uses fixed combos players can learn through repeated fights. That is a Soulslike-adjacent cue, but it is not enough by itself to settle the genre label. The most precise description is a fast kung-fu or wuxia action RPG with some Soulslike elements.
How combat and weapon progression work
S-Game’s August 17, 2026 PlayStation combat deep dive describes combat built around a growing set of weapons and ways to shape a loadout. As players explore, they can unlock more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. Some defeated enemies also expand the arsenal.

| Mode | What the official description says |
|---|---|
| Wayfarer | Story-focused difficulty. S-Game / PlayStation, August 17, 2026. |
| Hellwalker | More advanced and adaptive enemy intelligence. Combat director Qianli Ma says it adds enemy behaviors and boss moves, with a small parry-window adjustment relative to normal difficulty. S-Game / PlayStation, August 17, 2026; Ma interviewed by PC Gamer. |
| Sixty-Six Days | Described by S-Game as a severe challenge, “isn’t for the faint of heart.” S-Game / PlayStation, August 17, 2026. |
Ma’s explanation helps clarify the difference between normal difficulty and Hellwalker. He said a normal-difficulty boss can be learned through its fixed combos; in Hellwalker, human bosses can react to the player’s situation and vary their attacks. He also described Hellwalker’s changes to core mechanics as relatively small compared with its changes to enemy behavior and abilities. These are the combat director’s interview descriptions, not results from independent testing.
What is known about story and broader progression?
The PlayStation Store describes protagonist Soul as a warrior with 66 days left to live. The August 2026 deep dive says exploration reveals secrets and weapons, citizens and side quests appear during the journey, and some side quests may open new story paths. Together with weapon upgrades and reforging, those details point to progression through exploration, combat, and optional quests, alongside changes to the player’s combat setup.
