Is Phantom Blade Zero a Soulslike? How Its Combat Compares with the Genre

Phantom Blade Zero is best described as Soulslike-adjacent, not a conventional Soulslike. It uses recognizable genre ideas—dodge-or-parry defensive timing, demanding boss encounters, and bell-like rest and fast-travel points reported in hands-on previews—but S-Game says its target is a faster, cinematic wuxia action game rather than the slower, strategy-first model it associates with Soulslikes. The final balance, checkpoint structure and full progression system cannot be judged until launch.

As of October 13, 2026, the game was still unreleased. Official announcements listed October 28, 2026, in the United States and select regions and October 29 elsewhere; Steam listed October 28 for PC. PlayStation 5 and PC are the identified platforms.

The short answer: adjacent in mechanics, different in intent

Whether a game is a “Soulslike” depends on which traits you consider essential. If the label means a hard action game built around reading enemy attacks, choosing between evasion and timed defense, learning bosses and returning to meaningful rest points, Phantom Blade Zero clearly overlaps. If it means the slower, stamina-conscious, deliberately punishing structure associated with many Souls games, the available evidence points elsewhere.

S-Game’s own 2023 description is the clearest statement of intent. Founder and CEO Soulframe Liang contrasted the studio’s desired kung-fu action with what he called the “strategic action game” approach, writing that “What’s more popular today is ‘strategic action game’, such as Soulslikes and Monster Hunter.” The studio wanted sleek movement, elaborate chains and the feeling of a playable wuxia film instead. That is a design goal, not proof that the finished game cannot be classified as a Soulslike.

#1 Best Overall

Store categorization reflects the same ambiguity. Steam’s user-defined tags include “Souls-like,” “Hack and Slash,” “Action RPG” and “Martial Arts.” Those are community labels, not a formal genre ruling, so the most accurate description combines the tag with the developer’s stated direction and the preview evidence.

S-Game’s 2023 PlayStation Blog article is the source for the studio’s genre contrast and its explanation of the combat-animation approach.

What the combat is trying to feel like

Wuxia choreography instead of cautious attrition

S-Game describes a combat system built for martial-arts spectacle. Inputs are simplified so players can produce elaborate move chains, while individual attacks are made with handcrafted animation. Liang wrote, “Combat moves in Phantom Blade Zero have to be made with handcrafted animation, because motion capturing can’t do it justice.” That statement explains why the game’s movement is presented as choreographed action rather than a collection of generic attack animations.

Creative Bloq’s October 9, 2026 hands-on feature described the preview as feeling like a playable kung-fu movie, with fluid action and a strong wuxia aesthetic. This is an observation from a limited demo, not a measured comparison of the complete game, but it aligns with the developer’s stated objective.

Defensive reads: dodge or parry

Preview coverage reports color-coded signals that tell the player whether a response should be a dodge or a parry. Both GamesRadar+ and Creative Bloq describe parrying in combat, including boss encounters. That gives Phantom Blade Zero a familiar Soulslike decision point: recognize an incoming attack, select the appropriate defensive response and use the opening created by success.

The evidence does not establish that every enemy, attack or encounter uses one universal timing rule. It is safer to say the game uses recognizable dodge-and-parry reads than to claim that it reproduces a specific Souls title’s entire defensive system.

Long chains and player-controlled spectacle

The simplified-input philosophy does not mean combat is automatic. It is intended to let the player trigger complex sequences without requiring a separate command for every flourish. The resulting rhythm is closer to directing a martial-arts sequence—choosing when to defend, counter and continue a chain—than to slowly trading single blows until an enemy’s health bar is empty.

Because the animation work and chain design are central to the experience, speed alone should not be used as the comparison. The important difference is the combination of speed, cinematic transitions and deliberate defensive cues.

How Soulslike is its difficulty?

What one normal-difficulty preview reported

GamesRadar+’s three-hour hands-on session found the normal-difficulty demo fairly forgiving at first. The preview described reasonably long parry windows and enough room to absorb several hits, and said the game was not trying to punish the player unnecessarily in that slice. Those observations apply to that demo and difficulty setting; they do not establish the tuning of the final release, later areas or higher modes.

Published difficulty choices

The official combat deep dive presents three named options that let players choose how much resistance they want:

Mode Officially described purpose What that means for a Soulslike comparison
Wayfarer For players who primarily want to experience the story. Suggests a lower barrier to entry than a single fixed, punishing setting.
Hellwalker Raises the challenge and enemy adaptability. Provides a more demanding test, though the source does not define exact damage, health or timing values.
Sixty-Six Days Characterized by the developer as especially demanding. Likely to appeal to players seeking a severe challenge, without proving that it follows a Soulslike formula.

Multiple settings make “Is it hard?” an incomplete question. The answer depends on the selected mode, and no published source supplies completion rates, frame data or a controlled difficulty comparison with another game.

Does it have Soulslike rest points and exploration?

GamesRadar+ reported bells that functioned like familiar rest and fast-travel points in its preview, alongside open areas, traversal and boss encounters. That resemblance is one reason the Soulslike comparison is useful: players appear to have places where they can prepare, recover and move between discovered locations.

However, a preview observation is not confirmation that the complete game uses the same checkpoint density, death penalties, resource recovery or interconnected-map structure as Dark Souls or another specific title. The evidence supports “bonfire-esque bells,” not an assertion that the game duplicates a particular Souls game’s level architecture.

Weapons, Phantom Edges and build flexibility

S-Game’s August 17, 2026 deep dive says exploration unlocks more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. Weapons can be upgraded and combined with accessories, and the developer says upgrades can be reforged to recover materials. It also highlights build choices and the ability to rebuild a setup, giving players room to tailor how they approach fights.

Phantom Edges 25 secondary weapons are listed by the developer. Whether they map directly to a Soulslike off-hand, spell or skill category.
Upgrades Weapons can be upgraded; upgrades can be reforged to recover materials. Exact material costs, upgrade caps and whether death affects held resources.
Accessories and builds Accessories and rebuild flexibility support different setups. A confirmed stat, attribute or class system matching any particular Souls game.

These systems support calling the game an action RPG with build breadth. They do not, by themselves, prove the presence of a Soulslike stat model or equipment economy.

Combat comparison by axis

Comparison point What the evidence supports Careful conclusion
Pace and animation S-Game seeks sleek kung-fu-film movement, elaborate chains and handcrafted animation; Creative Bloq described fluid, cinematic action in its demo. The stated focus is wuxia choreography and fluid action, rather than slow strategic pacing.
Defensive timing Previews report color-coded dodge/parry cues and parrying during boss fights. It uses familiar defensive reads, but the sources do not show that every encounter follows one Soulslike template.
Punishment GamesRadar+ found the normal demo forgiving initially, with generous-feeling parry windows and room for several hits; the official game offers several difficulty options. Challenge is adjustable and preview-dependent, not demonstrably fixed at Soulslike severity.
Rest and travel GamesRadar+ saw bell-like rest and fast-travel points in a preview slice. The convention resembles Soulslike checkpoints, but the full structure remains unconfirmed.
Weapons and builds More than 30 main weapons, 25 Phantom Edges, upgrades, accessories and rebuild options are announced. There is substantial build variety without evidence of a specific Soulslike stat system.
Genre labels Steam users tag it “Souls-like,” “Hack and Slash,” “Action RPG” and “Martial Arts.” It is reasonable to call it Soulslike-adjacent or a wuxia action RPG with Soulslike elements.

Is Phantom Blade Zero like Sekiro or Dark Souls?

The comparison to Sekiro is understandable because both emphasize martial-arts presentation, precise defense and aggressive counterplay. The available sources do not provide a controlled, feature-by-feature comparison, and they do not establish that Phantom Blade Zero uses a posture meter, resurrection system or any other specific Sekiro mechanic. Use the comparison to describe the feel of reading attacks and parrying, not to claim identical systems.

Compared with Dark Souls, the clearest contrast is the declared pace and presentation. S-Game wants fluid wuxia choreography, while the preview’s forgiving normal mode and adjustable difficulty differ from the assumption of one consistently punishing experience. Bells, bosses and defensive timing create recognizable overlap, but the sources do not confirm Dark Souls-style death recovery, stamina management, class selection or interconnected level design.

In practical terms, players who enjoy Soulslikes for boss learning, timing-based defense and build experimentation may find familiar hooks. Players who want the slower, highly punitive rhythm of a traditional Souls formula should wait for final-game details rather than assuming the label guarantees that experience.

What is confirmed about release and platforms?

S-Game’s June 2, 2026 creative-director letter moved the announced date from September 9 to October 29, 2026. The subsequent PlayStation deep dive specified October 28 in the United States and select regions and October 29 elsewhere. Steam’s PC listing showed October 28, 2026. These were announced dates as of October 13, 2026, not evidence that the game had already launched.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?

  • Wuxia and martial-arts fans: the game’s central promise is cinematic kung-fu movement and handcrafted action animation.
  • Soulslike players: parry-or-dodge reads, boss learning, bell-like rest points and build choices provide recognizable entry points.
  • Players who dislike fixed difficulty: Wayfarer, Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days offer different intended challenge levels.
  • Players seeking a strict traditional Souls formula: treat the label as a partial description; the developer is explicitly pursuing a faster, more cinematic direction.

Bottom line

Phantom Blade Zero is not accurately reduced to “just another Soulslike.” It borrows enough of the vocabulary—parries, dodges, bosses, rest-and-travel bells and build experimentation—to make the comparison useful, and Steam users have applied the tag. Yet S-Game’s stated goal is a sleek, cinematic wuxia action game with accessible inputs, elaborate chains and adjustable challenge. Until the full release can establish its complete checkpoint, progression and punishment systems, “Soulslike-adjacent wuxia action RPG” is the most precise verdict.
