Developer Soulframe Liang says it borrows Souls-style map and exploration ideas while using faster, combo-driven action. He has described difficulty options and ways to reduce combat pressure, alongside deeper systems for players who want a challenge.
Is Phantom Blade Zero a Soulslike?
Not exactly, according to Soulframe Liang, the game’s director. In a June 2024 GamesBeat interview, he said the game was not precisely a Souls or Soulslike title. Its three-dimensional map takes inspiration from Souls games, but its combat is closer to older, combo-led action games. Liang summed up the blend as putting Ninja Gaiden combat into a Souls map. In a February 2025 interview, he again described a mix of exploration-driven gameplay and fast, fluid action.
That distinction matters if you are worried about a familiar Soulslike formula. The announced design pairs layered exploration with quicker fights, rather than presenting the combat as a Souls-style system in every respect. Liang has also said the map is intended to be easier to follow, with an in-game map to help players orient themselves.
Can beginners enjoy it, and does it have an easy mode?
Liang said in 2024 that the game would offer difficulty options and that less experienced players could focus on story and exploration with less combat pressure. PlayStation’s August 17, 2026 feature overview gives names and broad descriptions for three modes:
#1 Best Overall
- Each box contains 24 packs1 Pack: 6pcs + 1pcs
| Mode | What the announced description says |
|---|---|
| Wayfarer | Story-focused mode. |
| Hellwalker | More advanced, adaptive enemy intelligence. |
| Sixty-Six Days | A particularly demanding mode. |
The official overview does not label Wayfarer “easy,” and its short description does not specify exactly how enemy damage, health, or other settings differ between modes. It is fair to call it story-focused, but not to assume a particular set of accessibility options beyond what has been announced.
Liang described the intended range as accessible for most players while retaining depth for highly skilled players. That is the developer’s design goal, not an independent accessibility rating or a guarantee that every player will find the game easy.
What makes the combat approachable—and what will still take practice?
Flashy attacks without elaborate input strings
In a February 2025 Waypoint interview, Liang said the visually intense combat could be performed with a few simple button presses, without complex combo strings or special input commands. That may make it easier to execute dramatic attacks than in action games that demand long memorized sequences. It does not mean combat has no learning curve: timing, enemy behavior, and choosing an effective response still matter.
Learn enemy attacks and choose a defense
Liang’s account of a 2024 demo described several defensive responses. Holding the block button was a basic option that consumed a yellow meter; attacks marked by blue eyes called for parries, while red-eye attacks required dodging. These cues describe the build discussed in that interview, not a promise that every later version uses identical indicators.

Experienced players can pursue more demanding techniques, including parries and perfect dodges. If those systems sound intimidating, the useful distinction is that the announced design offers a lower-pressure mode while still making mastery an option—not that every enemy can be handled without learning its attacks.
Reduce the number of threats before a fight
Liang gave examples of tactical choices in encounters: quietly removing an archer, using a bow, or firing a cannon to thin out enemies before a direct fight. Those examples show how planning and ranged tools may help manage pressure, but they do not establish that every encounter offers all of those routes.
What progression choices are announced?
PlayStation’s August 2026 feature overview says players can unlock more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons, called Phantom Edges. It also describes weapon upgrades, accessories, and summons. An upgraded weapon can be reforged to recover its materials, according to the same overview. These are announced features; details may change before or after release.
Liang said in a later interview that the team did not plan a conventional numeric character-level grind. Instead, the announced progression emphasis is on equipment, weapon builds, upgrades, and skills. Check final-game details after launch before treating the early description as a complete account of progression.

What to expect if Soulslikes usually frustrate you
- Likely more approachable: the developer has described difficulty choices, a story-focused mode, and combat actions that do not require elaborate input strings.
- Still action-focused: the game asks players to respond to enemy behavior and offers parries, dodges, and deeper combat techniques.
- Not a guaranteed easy ride: the available descriptions do not provide a measured difficulty rating or detailed mode-by-mode settings.
- A different kind of Souls influence: the clearest comparison is the map and exploration, not a claim that its combat follows the Soulslike template.
Liang reported that more than 12,000 players attended six hands-on demo events in 2024; that figure is his interview statement, not an independently audited count. He also estimated in June 2024 that the main story could take 20–30 hours, with another 20–30 hours for side quests, collectibles, and challenges. Those are early estimates, not verified final-game playtime.
