Yes—in Yu-Gi-Oh!, piercing damage is a form of Battle Damage, not Effect Damage. When a monster with a piercing effect attacks a Defense Position monster and the attacker’s ATK is higher than the defender’s DEF, the opponent takes damage equal to the difference.
How piercing damage works in Yu-Gi-Oh!
The official Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Rulebook, version 9 (English) calls it “piercing battle damage.” For example, if a monster with a piercing effect has 2,000 ATK and attacks a Defense Position monster with 1,500 DEF, its controller inflicts 500 Battle Damage to the opponent’s Life Points.
Piercing is not automatic whenever a monster attacks a Defense Position monster. The attacking monster must have an effect that grants it; without that effect, the attack does not inflict piercing damage.
When is the damage inflicted?
The attack must reach damage calculation. Declaring an attack by itself does not inflict piercing damage. The official card-text guide, “Part 2: New Words & Phrases”, describes the effect as applying when the monster attacks a Defense Position monster and clarifies that it affects Battle Damage only.

Does the answer apply to every game?
No. “Piercing” and “battle damage” are game-specific rules terms, so one game’s classification does not establish another’s. Yu-Gi-Oh! explicitly treats piercing as Battle Damage. Separately, Force of Will Comprehensive Rules, version 12.7, section 1103.3, state that damage dealt by Pierce is battle damage. For a different game, check its own current official rules.
