Yes. Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. (SIE) identifies “PlayStation” as a “registered trademark or trademark” in its current Copyright and Trademark notice. That is enough to answer the general question: PlayStation is a protected brand mark owned by SIE.
The wording does not prove that the mark has the same registration status in every country. Trademark rights are jurisdiction-specific, and Sony’s public notices do not provide a country-by-country registration list. They also do not decide whether any particular third-party use is lawful.

What Sony’s current notice says
SIE’s current Copyright and Trademark notice lists “PlayStation” among the company’s “registered trademarks or trademarks.” The same notice names other PlayStation-related marks, including PS5, PS4, PS3, PS2, DualSense, DUALSHOCK, PlayStation Portal and PlayStation Studios.
That wording matters. Sony is not merely saying that PlayStation is a product name or an informal brand. It is identifying the name as a trademark, and in at least some jurisdictions as a registered trademark, of Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. A trademark identifies the commercial source of goods or services; registration can provide additional procedural and enforcement benefits in the jurisdictions that grant it.

The notice is a corporate statement about SIE’s marks. It is not a complete registry extract, a legal opinion about a proposed use, or a promise that every listed mark has identical protection everywhere.
What the PlayStation Terms of Service add
SIE’s website Terms of Service use similar language. They state that the “PlayStation family mark,” “PlayStation,” and other SIE product or service names and logos appearing on the site are registered trademarks or trademarks of SIE Inc. or its affiliates.
The Terms of Service also contain an important language qualification: the Japanese version prevails, while the English translation is provided for reference. That statement concerns which version controls the contract; it does not change the basic trademark identification. It does mean that readers relying on the English page should not treat it as the controlling text for a dispute governed by those terms.

Taken together, the current trademark notice and the Terms of Service support a careful conclusion: SIE claims PlayStation trademark rights and identifies the name as registered or otherwise protected, while the exact owner, registration status and scope can depend on the mark, jurisdiction and affiliated company involved.

Does “registered trademark” mean registered worldwide?
No. Sony’s wording should not be expanded into a claim that PlayStation is registered in every country.
Trademark registration is territorial. A registration in one country does not automatically create an identical registration in another. A company can also have trademark rights through use, corporate affiliation or other legal rules even where a particular registration is not shown in a public notice. SIE’s notice deliberately uses the combined phrase “registered trademarks or trademarks,” rather than assigning one universal status to every listed mark in every market.
For a country-specific answer, you would need to check the relevant national or regional trademark registry for the exact mark, owner, goods or services and status. The public SIE notices do not supply that jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction inventory, so they cannot establish a worldwide registration claim or provide a registration number for a particular country.
Trademark ownership is different from permission to use the name
Knowing that PlayStation is a trademark answers who claims the brand; it does not automatically answer whether a proposed use is permitted.

Trademark disputes usually turn on context. A product name, logo, packaging design, advertisement, fan project, news article or repair service may raise different questions about consumer confusion, affiliation, sponsorship and the goods or services involved. The same word can be discussed descriptively in one context and presented as a brand in another. The applicable rules also vary by jurisdiction.
Accordingly, Sony’s ownership statement does not mean that nobody may ever write or say “PlayStation.” It does mean that using the name or logos in a way that suggests an official product, sponsorship or authorization can create a legal issue, especially when the use is commercial. The SIE notices alone do not determine whether a particular third-party use is lawful.
How SIE’s licensing programs work
SIE describes formal licensing routes for products that use PlayStation branding. A license is permission granted under an agreement for defined uses; it is not blanket permission for anyone to place a PlayStation name or logo on merchandise.

Lifestyle goods and logo use
SIE also has a separate logo licensing program for licensees using specified PlayStation marks and logos on lifestyle goods, such as apparel and everyday items. The permission is tied to an agreement and to the marks and products covered by that agreement.
What the Official Licensed Product logo indicates
SIE says the Official Licensed Product logo identifies a product designed for PlayStation and confirmed by the licensee to meet SIE standards. The logo is therefore a useful indicator that a product is presented through an official licensing channel. It is not, by itself, a public substitute for the underlying agreement or a complete method for proving that every use by every seller is authorized.

How to assess a product that uses PlayStation branding
If you are deciding whether an accessory or merchandise item appears officially authorized, use the available evidence in this order. This is a practical screening method, not a legal certification.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Check whether the item is presented for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR2 or another platform covered by SIE’s licensing descriptions. A product that falls outside those categories may require a different explanation for its branding.
- Look for the Official Licensed Product logo. SIE says this logo indicates that the product was designed for PlayStation and that the licensee confirmed it meets SIE standards. Treat its presence as an indicator, not as a replacement for checking the exact product and seller.
- Separate the mark from the product claim. Determine whether the packaging uses the word PlayStation as a reference to compatibility or presents the item as an SIE-made or SIE-endorsed product. Those are different commercial messages.
- Check who is making the authorization claim. A manufacturer’s statement that an item is licensed is more meaningful when it identifies the licensee and the relevant program. A reseller’s use of a familiar logo does not, on its own, prove that the reseller is authorized.
- Match the exact use. Authorization can be limited by product, platform, territory, logo, packaging and time. Evidence that one accessory is licensed does not automatically authorize a different item or a different logo treatment.
What the 2016 announcement contributes
In a corporate announcement dated April 1, 2016, SIE also described PlayStation as a registered trademark of Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. That statement is historical corroboration of the company’s position.

The current Copyright and Trademark notice is the stronger source for present wording because it is the newer notice. The older announcement should not be read as a current, worldwide registration list or as evidence that every later PlayStation-related mark has the same status.
Common situations and the right level of certainty
“Can I mention PlayStation in an article or video?”
Sony’s trademark ownership does not prohibit ordinary discussion of the platform. The legal question is how the name and logos are used, whether the presentation suggests sponsorship or official affiliation, and which jurisdiction’s rules apply. A factual reference is different from branding your own product as an official PlayStation service.
“Can I put the PlayStation logo on an accessory I sell?”
Do not assume that a publicly visible logo creates permission. SIE describes licensing agreements for approved accessories and lifestyle goods. Commercial use should be evaluated against the specific license requirements and local law; the public notices do not grant a general license to independent sellers.
“If a product has no Official Licensed Product logo, is it illegal?”
Not necessarily. The logo is an indicator described by SIE, not a complete legal test. The legality of a particular product can depend on its wording, design, market, seller, authorization and other facts that are not available from the logo alone.
“Does Sony’s notice settle a dispute with a third party?”
No. It establishes SIE’s stated ownership and licensing framework, but it does not analyze a particular seller, fan project, repair business, advertisement or compatibility claim. A dispute requires the facts of that use and the law of the relevant jurisdiction.
What to do when the answer must be jurisdiction-specific
For a filing, product launch, takedown response or other high-stakes decision, identify the exact wording or logo, the goods or services, the countries involved, the parties’ relationship and the way consumers encounter the mark. Then check the applicable trademark registry and obtain advice from a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction.
That extra step is necessary because the general answer—PlayStation is identified by SIE as a registered trademark or trademark—does not reveal every registration, limitation, coexistence arrangement or permitted use. It answers the ownership question, not every legal question that may follow from using the brand.
