DOOM: The Dark Ages requires a hardware ray-tracing-capable graphics card to play on PC, even at minimum settings. That requirement does not mean you need to enable Path Tracing: Bethesda added Path Tracing as a separate, optional feature for select NVIDIA GPUs in a June 2025 update. Bethesda’s PC requirements spell out the baseline; its June 18, 2025 update explains Path Tracing support.
What “ray tracing required” means
Bethesda states that a hardware ray-tracing-compatible GPU is required for PC play, including at the minimum specification. In practical terms, a graphics card that cannot meet this hardware requirement is not a supported way to run the game. The requirements do not describe a setting that lets you turn off the requirement and play on an unsupported GPU.
Path Tracing is different: it is a separate graphics feature, not the baseline requirement. You do not need to turn Path Tracing on to play. Bethesda introduced it with DLSS Ray Reconstruction for select NVIDIA GPUs in its June 18, 2025 PC update.
Choose a GPU tier by resolution and settings
Bethesda publishes the following target combinations. These are the publisher’s specifications, not independent benchmark guarantees; actual results depend on the rest of the PC and game updates.

Use the VRAM tier and target that match your intended resolution and preset, rather than treating one named card as a guarantee for every setup. For example, the RTX 3080 is Bethesda’s recommended-tier example for 1440p at 60 FPS on High settings; it is not required for basic play. See the full Bethesda requirements table before choosing or upgrading hardware.
Bethesda lists an NVMe SSD and at least 100GB of available storage. Its requirements page also specifies a minimum storage capacity of 512GB. Steam likewise lists 100GB available and an NVMe SSD requirement on the game’s listing.

Path Tracing and Ray Reconstruction are optional
The June 18, 2025 update introduced Path Tracing with DLSS Ray Reconstruction for select NVIDIA GPUs. Bethesda’s instructions are to open Video Settings, scroll to the Path Tracing section, and set Path Tracing to On. To use Ray Reconstruction, select it as the denoiser in that section, then apply the changes. Bethesda lists NVIDIA driver 576.75 or higher for this feature.
Bethesda says users with other supported GPU models may attempt Path Tracing at lower settings, but 60 FPS, correct visuals, and game stability are not assured. The same dated update documented possible visual artifacts in the Harbor of Souls “barge crash” cutscene and on tentacle enemies attached to walls. Those are issues noted in that update, not confirmation that they remain present today.

Check your system and drivers if the game has problems
For launch troubleshooting, Bethesda advises checking that the PC meets the minimum specifications, confirming the game is using the intended GPU, and updating graphics drivers. That support guidance lists AMD driver 25.5.1 and NVIDIA 576.40 as minimum versions in that troubleshooting context. These are separate from the NVIDIA 576.75-or-higher driver guidance for Path Tracing; driver recommendations may change with later updates. Consult Bethesda’s requirements and its PC troubleshooting guidance for current details.

Bethesda’s June 2025 update added Benchmark Mode, which follows a consistent, nearly deterministic route through selected levels and graphs FPS, total frame time, GPU frame time, and CPU frame time. Run it with the resolution and graphics options you actually plan to use; the result is a way to assess your particular system, not a promise that another PC with a similarly named card will perform identically. Bethesda gives no universal benchmark result in its update.
