For better performance in Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC, start with the in-game quality slider, then run the built-in graphics benchmark and adjust the settings Rockstar identifies as higher impact—especially MSAA, reflections, water and volumetrics. There is no universal best preset: compare results on your own hardware. For readability, check the current subtitle and display menus; the available documentation confirms language support but does not establish specific subtitle-size, HUD-scale or contrast controls.
How to tune RDR2 graphics without guessing
- Start with the quality slider. Rockstar says the in-game slider analyzes PC capabilities and adjusts background graphics parameters according to resolution and whether you prefer performance or image quality. Try it as a baseline rather than assuming a preset suits every system.
- Run the benchmark. Go to Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test. Record the result and note the conditions you want to compare, including resolution and the graphics options in use.
- Change one high-impact option at a time. Rockstar recommends testing the settings below first. After each change, rerun the benchmark under the same conditions and compare frame rate and image quality at your display resolution.
- Keep the setting that best fits your priorities. Consider frame rate, visual quality, video-memory headroom and stability together. If a change does not help on your system, revert it and test another option.
Rockstar cautions that settings affect performance differently depending on the PC’s configuration. Its PC graphics tuning guidance therefore supports a measured, system-specific process—not a single set of settings for every player.
Which graphics settings should you test first?
Rockstar’s first group to test contains five settings. Their actual impact depends on your PC, so use the benchmark to decide whether lowering any of them is worthwhile.
| Priority | Setting | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| First group | Multisampling Anti-Aliasing (MSAA) | Test a lower value or turn it off, then compare the benchmark and image at your display resolution. |
| First group | Reflection Quality | Reduce it incrementally and check whether the performance change is worth the visual difference. |
| First group | Water Quality | Test a lower setting and compare results under the same benchmark conditions. |
| First group | Volumetric Quality | Try a lower value, then evaluate both performance and the scene’s appearance. |
| First group | Near Volumetric Resolution | Adjust it separately from the broader Volumetric Quality setting to see whether it makes a useful difference on your PC. |
These are priorities for testing, not guaranteed fixes or prescribed values. The cited Rockstar guidance identifies them as the first settings to experiment with, but does not promise a particular frame-rate gain for any one change.

What to adjust after the first group
If you still need a different balance after testing the first group, Rockstar lists these additional settings to experiment with:
- Temporal Anti-Aliasing
- Texture Quality
- Lighting Quality
- Shadow Quality
- Screen Space Ambient Occlusion
- Anisotropic Filtering
- Far Shadow Quality
- Tessellation Quality
- FXAA
- Volumetric Lighting Quality
- Triple Buffering
- Global Illumination Quality
- Particle Quality
- Mirror Quality
- Far Volumetric Resolution
Test options individually rather than lowering everything at once. That makes it easier to identify which change helped and whether the loss in image quality is acceptable. A benchmark comparison is most useful when you keep the test conditions consistent.

Should you use DLSS?
On a supported GeForce setup, DLSS is available under Settings > Graphics. NVIDIA says it can provide performance acceleration of up to 45% at 4K, but that is NVIDIA’s vendor claim, not a guaranteed result for every graphics card or configuration. Compare DLSS with native rendering on your own system and judge both performance and image quality.
NVIDIA’s DLSS announcement describes the feature and its stated 4K performance claim.

How to troubleshoot the cited video-memory error
If RDR2 crashes with ERR_GFX_D3D_DEFERRED_MEM, Rockstar’s support guidance recommends checking that the PC meets the game’s minimum requirements, updating graphics drivers and lowering graphics settings. For this memory-pressure troubleshooting case, Rockstar advises starting with the in-game Video Memory meter at about two-thirds—66%—of total available video memory. This is guidance for the cited error, not a general target that every player needs to enforce.

Check your PC against Rockstar’s listed requirements
Rockstar’s official store lists the following PC requirements. The store cautions that downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300 | Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X |
| Memory | 8 GB | 12 GB |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 2 GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 3 GB | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB or AMD Radeon RX 480 4 GB |

Steam lists interface and subtitle language support for the PC game, but the available documentation does not confirm exact subtitle-size, subtitle-background, HUD-scaling or contrast controls. Check the game’s current display and accessibility menus for the options available in your installed version, and preview any changes in play before relying on them. Do not assume a particular size or scaling control exists based on an unverified menu path.
The PC edition supports HDR, 4K and higher resolutions, multi-monitor and widescreen configurations, and faster frame rates, according to Rockstar’s PC edition announcement. Those display capabilities are not evidence of a specific subtitle or HUD readability control. Steam’s store page identifies interface and subtitle language support.
