Running WordPress in Docker is worth it when you need reproducible environments, isolation, repeatable deployments, or infrastructure control—and you are prepared to operate the containers, database, storage, HTTPS, backups, and updates yourself. It is usually the wrong choice when your priority is a hands-off site managed by a hosting provider. Docker can make WordPress deployments more consistent, but it does not automatically make a site faster, safer, or cheaper.

What Docker changes in a WordPress installation

Docker packages an application and its dependencies into containers. For WordPress, the common design is a web application container paired with a separate MySQL or MariaDB container. Docker Compose describes those services, their network, ports, environment variables, and persistent volumes in a YAML file. Compose can then create the same general stack for development, testing, continuous integration, staging, or production, with environment-specific settings where necessary.

This is different from installing WordPress directly on a server. A traditional installation puts PHP, a database server, a web server, WordPress files, and configuration on the host operating system. Docker makes those boundaries explicit: WordPress has one lifecycle, the database another, and the data they must retain is kept in volumes or mounts outside the disposable container layers.

The official WordPress image models WordPress and its database as separate services and uses environment-based configuration. You can use that image as a base for custom themes, plugins, PHP settings, or additional extensions. If you need PHP extensions that are not present in the base image, you must build a custom image rather than merely changing a runtime setting.

When Docker is worth it

Reproducible environments

A Compose file records the intended services and relationships instead of leaving the setup in an administrator’s memory. A developer can recreate the same broad application layout on another machine, and an agency can use a common definition across client projects. This does not make every environment identical: secrets, domains, certificates, resource limits, and storage paths still need environment-specific configuration. It does make the differences visible and reviewable.

Isolation between services

Separating WordPress from its database clarifies dependencies and reduces accidental coupling with unrelated software on the host. Containers can communicate over a private Compose network while only the intended web entry point is exposed. Isolation is not a security guarantee by itself; the host kernel, container runtime, images, plugins, themes, and WordPress configuration still require maintenance.

Repeatable lifecycle operations

Compose supplies a predictable operational vocabulary. You can start the stack with docker compose up -d, inspect it with docker compose ps, review service output with docker compose logs, stop services, rebuild a custom image, and redeploy a changed definition. The value is consistency: the same documented commands can be used by different operators and in deployment automation.

Development, staging, and CI parity

Using one Compose definition as the starting point for development, testing, CI, staging, and production can reduce “works on my machine” surprises. Production should still use separate secrets, domains, data, and resource settings. A copy of production data should not be casually used in development, and a staging deployment should not point at the production database.

Customization and additional services

Docker is useful when WordPress is only one part of a larger application. You can build a custom image with required PHP extensions, add a reverse proxy, or run cooperating services on the same private network. That flexibility is valuable for teams with a defined deployment process. It also creates more components to patch, monitor, back up, and troubleshoot.

The operational costs you take on

Persistent storage is your responsibility

Containers are replaceable; WordPress content and the database are not. Uploads, the WordPress installation, plugins, themes, and especially database tables must be stored in persistent volumes or host mounts. Before recreating or moving a stack, verify which paths contain user data and where each volume is attached.

Destructive commands deserve special caution. The official WordPress Compose example warns that docker compose down --volumes removes the containers and network and also removes the WordPress database volume. Treat that command as a data-loss operation unless you have a tested backup and intentionally want to erase the database.

Backups and restores are no longer someone else’s job

Docker does not back up a WordPress site merely because its files are in a volume. You need a plan for both the database and the WordPress files, plus a restore procedure that has been tested on a separate environment. WordPress.org guidance recommends keeping at least three to five recent WordPress backups in different locations, including host, cloud, and local copies.

A useful backup checklist includes:

  • Exporting the MySQL or MariaDB database, not just copying the container.
  • Copying the persistent WordPress files, including uploads, plugins, themes, and configuration that you intentionally maintain.
  • Keeping multiple recent versions so a corrupted or compromised backup is not your only recovery point.
  • Storing copies in different locations and checking that the backup files can actually be read.
  • Practising a restore that recreates the database, mounts the files, and verifies that the site and media work.

Updates require an image and deployment process

The official WordPress image recommends rebuilding and redeploying regularly so the stack receives current WordPress security updates. Updating a running container in place is not a substitute for a repeatable image process. Before an update, record the current image versions, back up the database and files, review plugin and theme compatibility, and have a rollback path.

Security maintenance is ongoing. WordPress hardening guidance emphasizes keeping WordPress up to date; the same discipline applies to the base image, PHP, MySQL or MariaDB, the host operating system, the reverse proxy, and every plugin and theme. A Compose file can describe the desired state, but it does not apply patches without an operator or automation.

HTTPS and reverse-proxy design

HTTPS remains a requirement whether WordPress runs directly on a host or inside containers. If TLS terminates at NGINX or another reverse proxy, the proxy must pass the correct X-Forwarded-Proto value so WordPress understands that the visitor used HTTPS. Misconfigured forwarding can cause redirect loops, mixed-content warnings, or incorrect secure-cookie behavior.

PHP-FPM variants of the WordPress image require a reverse proxy and should not be exposed directly to the public internet. Keep the FPM service on a private container network and expose only the appropriately configured web-facing service. Decide where certificates are issued and renewed, how traffic reaches the Compose network, and how a failed proxy or expired certificate will be detected.

Secrets and configuration need deliberate handling

Database passwords, authentication salts, and similar values should not be casually committed to a public Compose file. The official image supports _FILE variables so values can be loaded from Docker secrets instead of ordinary environment variables. Use separate credentials for development, staging, and production, restrict access to secret files, and rotate credentials when an operator, host, or backup location is no longer trusted.

Does Docker make WordPress faster?

There is no universal speed advantage. Performance depends on the workload, storage driver and volume strategy, database configuration, PHP and web-server settings, caching, network design, and the capacity of the host. Docker’s storage documentation discusses the performance characteristics and trade-offs of storage choices, but there is no authoritative benchmark establishing that Docker WordPress is faster than a conventional installation.

Measure the system you actually plan to run. Look at page-generation time, database latency, disk I/O, memory pressure, PHP worker saturation, and cache hit rates under representative traffic. A containerized site on fast storage can perform well; a poorly chosen bind mount, undersized host, or unconfigured database can perform badly. Containerization changes packaging and operations, not the laws of capacity planning.

Minimum versions and prerequisites

WordPress currently recommends that a host support PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. These requirements apply inside a Docker deployment as well. Choosing an older PHP or database image because it is convenient can leave the site on an end-of-life release with known security risks.

Component WordPress recommendation What it means in Docker
PHP 8.3 or greater Select a maintained WordPress image variant or build a maintained custom image.
Database MariaDB 10.11 or greater, or MySQL 8.0 or greater Pin and update a supported database image; preserve its data in a persistent volume.
Transport HTTPS Configure TLS in the web container or a reverse proxy and pass HTTPS forwarding headers correctly.

You also need a Linux host or other supported Docker environment, enough CPU, memory, and storage for WordPress and its database, a domain or other reachable hostname for a public site, and a way to monitor failures. The exact resource size depends on traffic, plugins, media, and background jobs; the Docker image does not establish a universal minimum.

Docker versus managed WordPress hosting

The key difference is operational ownership, not a simple “modern versus old” technology choice. Managed hosting generally aims to handle routine patching, backups, HTTPS, and support workflows. With Docker, you control the stack and can reproduce it, but you must perform or automate those jobs.

Decision area Dockerized WordPress Managed WordPress hosting
Operations You maintain the host, containers, images, volumes, database, proxy, and monitoring. The provider handles the routine infrastructure workflow to the extent stated in its service terms.
Reproducibility Compose records services, networks, ports, variables, and volumes for repeatable environments. Recreation depends on the provider’s platform and export or migration tools.
Backups and restore You must back up both database and files and test restoration. The provider may offer backups, but retention, locations, and restore support must be verified.
HTTPS and networking You design certificate renewal, reverse-proxy routing, and forwarding headers. The provider typically supplies an integrated workflow, subject to its configuration and support scope.
Customization High control over images, PHP extensions, services, and network topology. Customization is limited to the platform’s supported features.
Support model Support comes from your team, contractors, or infrastructure vendors. A provider support channel can handle platform operations, depending on the plan.
Cost profile You pay for infrastructure and the time or expertise required to operate it. You pay for hosting that bundles varying levels of operational service.

Choose Docker when your team can maintain Linux and container updates, persistent volumes, databases, HTTPS, and backups; when you need reproducible development, staging, CI, or agency deployments; or when you need to customize the image and run multiple cooperating services.

Choose managed hosting when you want a provider to handle patching, backups, HTTPS, and routine operations; when the site is business-critical but container operations are not part of your work; or when a support workflow is more valuable than infrastructure control. “Managed” does not mean every provider offers identical backups, security, or support, so confirm those details before signing up.

A safer Docker deployment workflow

  1. Define the services. Write the Compose definition for WordPress, the database, persistent volumes, networks, ports, and environment-specific settings.
  2. Choose supported images. Use PHP 8.3 or newer and MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.11 or newer, and establish how images will be rebuilt and updated.
  3. Separate secrets. Keep passwords and salts out of committed plain-text configuration where possible; use the image’s _FILE mechanism with Docker secrets.
  4. Design the network edge. Decide whether TLS terminates in a reverse proxy, pass X-Forwarded-Proto correctly, and keep PHP-FPM private when using an FPM image.
  5. Create persistent storage deliberately. Label the database and WordPress file volumes, document their locations, and ensure routine cleanup commands cannot remove them accidentally.
  6. Automate and test backups. Back up database and files, retain at least three to five recent copies in different locations, and perform a restore before calling the deployment production-ready.
  7. Deploy and inspect. Start with docker compose up -d, check docker compose ps, and review docker compose logs for startup, database, proxy, and certificate errors.
  8. Patch on a schedule. Rebuild and redeploy the image regularly, update WordPress and extensions, and keep a rollback image and recent backup available.
  9. Measure the real workload. Monitor resource use and response times, then adjust storage, database, PHP workers, caching, or host capacity based on evidence rather than assuming Docker itself changes speed.

Common failure modes and recovery choices

The site disappears after a cleanup

If the database volume was removed, the containers can start successfully while the site has no content. Stop destructive cleanup, locate the latest database and file backups, recreate the intended volumes, restore the database, and verify uploads and configuration before reopening the site.

Redirect loops after enabling HTTPS

Check where TLS terminates and whether the reverse proxy sends the correct X-Forwarded-Proto value. Confirm that the web-facing service and WordPress agree on the public HTTPS scheme. Do not solve a proxy-header problem by disabling HTTPS checks.

WordPress cannot connect to its database

Verify that the database service is running, that WordPress uses the Compose service name and correct credentials, and that both services share the intended private network. If credentials were changed, update the secret source and restart or redeploy using the documented process.

An update breaks a plugin or theme

Restore the known-good image and backup, then test the update in staging with the same Compose definition and separate data. Record the incompatible component and schedule a controlled upgrade rather than leaving production on an unmaintained stack indefinitely.

Bottom line: control versus convenience

Docker is a strong fit for teams that value repeatability, portability, isolation, and custom infrastructure and can accept responsibility for storage, backups, HTTPS, secrets, updates, and incident recovery. It is not a performance shortcut or a replacement for WordPress administration. If those operational duties are outside your role or capacity, managed WordPress hosting is the more practical choice. Make the decision based on who will operate the system every week—not on the container label.
