Yes. Shadow of the Erdtree is planned as the first and last downloadable expansion for Elden Ring, according to a May 2024 interview with director Hidetaka Miyazaki. That reported decision concerns more DLC for the existing game; it does not confirm that the wider Elden Ring world will never return in another game.
What “first and last DLC” means
Miyazaki’s May 2024 interview with Chinese gaming outlet Campfire Camp was reported in translation by GameSpot as saying that Shadow of the Erdtree would be the “first and last DLC,” with no plans to add more content to Elden Ring. The English wording comes through translated-interview reporting, not an official English transcript, so it is best understood as the substance of his statement rather than a verified verbatim English quote.

In practical terms, players should not expect another expansion for the 2022 game. The expansion launched worldwide on June 21, 2024, as downloadable content for Elden Ring, according to FromSoftware’s announcement.
Why FromSoftware chose one large expansion
In its report on the same interview, PC Gamer attributes the choice to the game’s emphasis on exploration and immersion. Miyazaki’s reported explanation was that dividing the experience into multiple smaller paid DLCs could undermine players’ freedom to explore. The approach, as reported, was to make one substantial expansion rather than several smaller releases.

Does this rule out another Elden Ring game?
No. The statement addresses additional content for Elden Ring, not the future of the franchise. GameSpot reported that Miyazaki did not rule out another game set in the Elden Ring world, but he did not confirm that one is planned. That leaves the possibility open without making a sequel or other future title an announced project.

Shadow of the Erdtree requires the Elden Ring base game; the expansion is not a standalone game. FromSoftware’s launch announcement described digital availability across platforms and announced release packages, including a combined game-and-expansion edition and a collector’s edition. These historical announcements do not establish current stock or availability. Check the platform, territory, and edition contents before buying; some bundles may include a base-game disc and a digital expansion rather than both on disc.
How successful was the expansion?
FromSoftware said on July 24, 2025, that Shadow of the Erdtree had surpassed 10 million units shipped worldwide since its 2024 release. This is the company’s shipment figure as of that announcement, not a live sales total. For context, FromSoftware reported that Elden Ring had surpassed 23 million units shipped worldwide in its February 22, 2024 DLC announcement; that is a historical figure from that date, not a current total.
