In a June 5, 2026 strategy Q&A, Sony said it is developing the next generation of the PlayStation platform and wants play to extend naturally beyond the living room. That describes a goal for the experience, not an announced handheld, hybrid console, or standalone portable device.
What Sony has actually said about the next PlayStation
In its Game & Network Services Segment Small Meeting Q&A Summary, dated June 5, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment said it was continuing to invest in the future of PlayStation, including “the next generation of the platform and related content.” The company described a development goal of anticipating changes in how people play and making its ecosystem more accessible.

Asked about attracting players who had moved to gaming PCs and what might change with the next-generation platform, SIE President and CEO Hideaki Nishino said: “For the next-generation platform, rather than simply serving as an alternative to PCs, we aim to deliver value that is unique to PlayStation. This includes not only technological advancements but also an expansion of usage styles, enabling a seamless experience that can be enjoyed naturally beyond the living room.”
“Beyond the living room” could be compatible with more portable play, but it does not specify how Sony plans to deliver it. The statement names no device, form factor, operating model, or launch date. Sony also said it evaluates multiple scenarios and options involving technology, hardware, and business models; its launch-timing considerations include technology, marketing, regional dynamics, and pricing.

Why people are reading the comments as a handheld hint
The language about expanding play styles naturally invites speculation about a handheld or hybrid system. A June 30, 2026 TechRadar report framed Nishino’s remarks as suggesting those possibilities. That is an interpretation of Sony’s strategy language, not a product announcement from Sony.
The distinction matters: a company can make a platform easier to use outside the living room through several approaches, including remote play or cloud services, without making a standalone console that runs games locally. Sony has not said which approach, if any, will define its next-generation hardware.
What Sony offers today: PlayStation Portal
Sony’s current physical product most relevant to play away from the television is the PlayStation Portal Remote Player. In the same Q&A, Sony describes Portal as a dedicated device for the controller-based PlayStation experience and discusses it as part of its offering for play styles beyond the living room. It is a remote-play product, not evidence that Sony has approved a new standalone handheld.

Sony also says the quality of cloud gaming depends heavily on network conditions. It reported strong Portal demand in North America, Europe, and Japan, and said its servers reached full capacity during the latest holiday season. The company did not disclose Portal unit sales. The Q&A does not say that Portal runs future console games locally or that it is a preview of next-generation hardware.
What is known—and still unknown
Sony supplied platform context in the June 2026 Q&A: it reported more than 93 million PS5 units and 125 million monthly active user accounts, both as of March 2026. Those figures describe the scale and engagement of PlayStation’s existing platform; they do not establish a plan for a portable console.
For a next-generation portable or hybrid PlayStation, Sony has not announced the device-level details readers would need to evaluate what it might be:

Will the PS6 be portable?
Sony has not confirmed that the PS6—or whatever name it gives its next-generation platform—will be portable. Its public goal of enabling play beyond the living room leaves room for portable hardware, but it does not prove that a fully portable console is coming. The confirmed information is that Sony is investing in a next-generation platform and wants to expand how and where people can use PlayStation.
