If you mean Supernatural, season 16 was never planned: showrunner Andrew Dabb said the series was designed to end after its leads made clear that season 15 would be their last. He also said Warner Bros. and The CW wanted the show to continue, so his account points to the actors’ plans—not a reported network cancellation—as the reason it ended.
Why wasn’t season 16 planned?
In a July 14, 2025 interview with TV Insider, Andrew Dabb, showrunner for seasons 12 through 15, said there was no plan for a sixteenth season. He explained that Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles had made it clear season 15 would be the end, and that the production planned accordingly.

Dabb said Warner Bros. and The CW wanted the series to continue. His explanation therefore centers on the leads’ decision to move on and pursue other work, rather than a reported cancellation by the network. This is Dabb’s account in the interview, not separate confirmation from the actors or the studios.
How did the series end?
Supernatural ended on The CW in 2020 after 15 seasons. The planned ending gave Sam and Dean Winchester a resolution: after their lives diverge, the brothers are eventually reunited in heaven. That conclusion reflects the decision to close the story rather than leave season 15 as a setup for an already-planned continuation.

Could the show return someday?
Dabb did not rule out more stories in the Supernatural world. He said he hoped Padalecki and Ackles might return, or that the franchise might continue in another form. But in the July 2025 interview, he described the market as difficult: he cited streamer cutbacks and said buyers did not seem interested in genre procedurals.
That was Dabb’s assessment at the time of the interview, not confirmation that a revival had been formally pitched, ordered, or rejected by a specific buyer. He floated possible approaches in hypothetical terms; none should be mistaken for an active production plan. The interview also does not establish a confirmed streaming home or revival partner.

The cited interview does not give ratings or budget figures as reasons for ending the show, and it does not establish that either was decisive. The explanation Dabb gave was that the lead actors had signaled season 15 would be their last, so the team planned a series ending.
