Yes. Space Engineers supports multiplayer co-op and competitive play in both Creative and Survival. You can join a friend’s local session, use an official Keen server, or rent a dedicated server for a persistent world. PC, Xbox/Game Pass and PlayStation players can play together when they use an EOS-compatible server; official Keen Steam servers are for PC Steam players only.

Space Engineers is not limited to solo play. Its Steam listing identifies the game as supporting Single-player, Online PvP, Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer. Multiplayer works in both of the game’s main modes:
- Creative: Build and experiment together with fewer resource constraints.
- Survival: Gather materials, manage production and defend a shared base as a team, or compete with other players.
- Competitive play: Public servers can support conflict between players, subject to each server’s rules.
Keen Software House describes the experience as ranging from “small co-op outposts to huge community servers.” That range is important: a two-person building session and a long-running public world use different hosting arrangements.

Four ways to play with other people
| Multiplayer path | Best for | Crossplay | World persistence | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local or private host | A small, same-platform friend group | Usually same platform; mixed-platform play requires EOS-compatible infrastructure | Depends on the host being online | Simple and low cost, but the world is unavailable when the host is offline |
| Official Keen Steam servers | PC Steam players who want immediate public multiplayer | PC Steam only | Server-based | Easy access, with public rules and population that vary |
| Official Keen EOS servers | PC, Xbox/Game Pass and PlayStation groups | Yes, across supported platforms | Server-based | You must select the EOS network/server, and platform and mod restrictions apply |
| Rented dedicated server | Groups wanting a persistent private world, administration or mods | Choose an EOS-compatible host for crossplay | Always-on while the service runs | Monthly cost plus setup and administration |
Can PC, Xbox and PlayStation play together?
Yes, but crossplay is tied to the server network rather than being universal across every listing. Keen’s EOS system allows supported PC, Xbox/Game Pass and PlayStation players to share a world. Keen’s PlayStation information states that PC, Xbox and PlayStation players can team up, and that PlayStation uses the same EOS servers as Xbox and PC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOfficial Keen servers are split by network:
- EOS servers: Cross-platform for supported PC, Xbox/Game Pass and PlayStation players.
- Steam servers: PC Steam only. They are not crossplay servers for console players.
When browsing multiplayer, switch between the Steam and EOS server lists and select an EOS-compatible server for a mixed-platform group. A PC player joining a console friend should not assume that a server visible in the Steam list will accept console players.
What crossplay does not guarantee
Crossplay makes the platforms compatible at the server level; it does not remove every platform limitation. Console-hosted sessions have restrictions on scripting, and server owners can impose their own rules, mod lists and access requirements. Check the server’s network, platform support and mod requirements before everyone commits to a world.
Local co-op: the simplest option for a small group
A local or private session is practical when one person wants to host a short building or survival game for friends on the same platform. The host creates or loads the world, sets it to multiplayer and invites the other players through the platform’s normal friend or lobby system.
This approach has three defining characteristics:
- Host-dependent availability: The world normally exists while the host is running the session. Friends cannot continue playing if the host is offline.
- Low setup overhead: There is no separate server account to configure or maintain.
- Platform limits: Same-platform play is the safe assumption. Mixed-platform groups need an EOS server instead of relying on a local lobby.
Local hosting is therefore a good test of whether your group enjoys the game, but it becomes inconvenient for a campaign that should remain available between play sessions.

Microsoft’s Xbox listing gives different local lobby figures for different Xbox One models. Xbox One and Xbox One S support two players total in the listed configuration: the host plus one client. Xbox One X supports four players total: the host plus three clients.

| Xbox model | Players in the listed local lobby | How the total is counted |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One / Xbox One S | 2 | Host plus one client |
| Xbox One X | 4 | Host plus three clients |
These figures describe the Xbox local-lobby configuration in Microsoft’s product listing. They are not a universal cap for every Space Engineers server. Dedicated-server capacity depends on the server configuration, software version, hardware and provider settings, while public servers can set their own population rules.
When a dedicated server is worth using
Keen defines dedicated servers as “game instances intended for long time multiplayer games.” In practical terms, the server runs independently of any one player’s game session, so the world can remain available for scheduled play, building projects and shared progression.
Choose dedicated hosting when you need
- An always-on world that friends can enter when the original host is away.
- Central administration, including access controls, backups and world management.
- A private server for a regular group rather than a temporary lobby.
- Mods or programmable scripts that are unavailable in console-hosted sessions.
- A predictable server location for a geographically distributed group.
Official hosting references
For PC dedicated servers, Keen’s documentation names GTX Gaming as its official PC host. For Xbox, Keen names Nitrado as the official host. Keen’s PlayStation Plus announcement also says that players can launch private servers through Nitrado. These references identify the hosts Keen lists; availability, region, hardware options and pricing can change, so check the current provider terms before subscribing.
If your group includes multiple platforms, select an EOS-compatible dedicated-server configuration. A Steam-only dedicated server will not provide the crossplay path used by Xbox and PlayStation players.
How to choose and launch the right server
For a same-platform, short session
- Have one player create or load the Creative or Survival world.
- Enable multiplayer and set the session to friends-only or private access.
- Invite friends through the platform’s normal friend or lobby interface.
- Confirm that everyone uses the same platform network and compatible game version.
- Tell the group that the world depends on the host remaining online.
For PC players joining an official server
- Open the multiplayer browser.
- Use the Steam server list for PC-only play, or switch to the EOS list for a group that includes Xbox/Game Pass or PlayStation.
- Read the server name, region, rules, population and mod information.
- Join only after checking that the network matches the rest of your group.
For a private persistent world
- Decide whether your players are all on PC or whether the world must support crossplay.
- Choose a dedicated-server host and a region close to most players. Keen’s official server overview advises selecting a nearby region to reduce distance-related latency.
- Select a Steam-compatible configuration for PC-only play or an EOS-compatible configuration for PC, Xbox/Game Pass and PlayStation crossplay.
- Configure the world, access controls, backups and mod list before inviting the group.
- Share the server connection details privately and document who has administrative rights.
A dedicated server changes the cost and responsibility model: the provider charges for the service, while the group still needs someone to manage settings, permissions, updates and backups.

Mod support is not identical across every multiplayer path. Keen’s crossplay information says Xbox worlds may contain mods without scripts. Dedicated servers can run mods with scripts when those mods do not require client-side scripts.

Programmable Block scripting has a specific console restriction. Keen’s PlayStation FAQ states that in-game scripting is not available in single-player or locally hosted multiplayer on console platforms, but scripting is available when connected to a dedicated server.

| Session type | Programmable scripting | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Console single-player | Unavailable | Platform limitation |
| Console locally hosted multiplayer | Unavailable | Platform limitation |
| Dedicated server | Available | Mods still must meet the server and client requirements |
Do not assume that a mod working on a PC local world will work in an EOS console session. Verify whether it requires scripts, whether clients must install files, and whether the chosen server permits it.
How to pick between Steam and EOS
Use Steam when
- Every player is on PC Steam.
- You want access to the PC-only official Keen Steam server list.
- Your group does not need console crossplay.
Use EOS when
- At least one player is on Xbox/Game Pass or PlayStation.
- You want PC and console players in the same world.
- You are renting a dedicated server for a mixed-platform group.
The network decision should happen before world setup. Moving a group from a Steam server to EOS later can require a different server listing, configuration and mod plan.
Common multiplayer problems and fixes
A console player cannot see the PC friend’s server
Check whether the host is using the Steam list. Console players need an EOS-compatible server; official Keen Steam servers remain PC-only. Have the PC player switch to the EOS server browser or join an EOS dedicated server.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe world disappears when the host leaves
That is expected for a host-dependent local session. Move the world to a dedicated server if the group needs access while the original host is offline.
A programmable script will not run
On console, local multiplayer and single-player scripting are restricted. Use a dedicated server for scripting, and confirm that the mod does not require client-side scripts that the target platform cannot execute.
Players experience lag or unstable connections
Choose a server region close to the majority of the group, as Keen’s server overview recommends. Also check the server’s population, mod load and administrative rules; public-server conditions vary.
The group assumes one player-cap number applies everywhere
Do not use the Xbox local-lobby figures as a universal limit. The listed totals are two players on Xbox One/One S and four on Xbox One X. Dedicated servers and public worlds use different settings and may support different populations.
What you need before starting
- A copy of the game on a supported platform: PC, Xbox/Game Pass or PlayStation.
- The same network choice for everyone: Steam for PC-only play or EOS for cross-platform play.
- A decision between a host-dependent local world and an independently running dedicated server.
- A shared mod plan, especially if anyone is on console.
- For dedicated hosting, a server region near the group and an administrator responsible for configuration and backups.
There is no single player cap, server type or mod policy that applies to every Space Engineers multiplayer session. The practical rule is straightforward: use a private local host for a small, occasional group; use an official server for immediate public play; and use an EOS-compatible dedicated server when a mixed-platform group needs a persistent, administrated world.
