That makes it the most-played Warhammer game by that launch-era peak measure—not necessarily the Warhammer game with the most players online now.
What does “most-played” mean here?
The record is a comparison of each game’s reported all-time concurrent-player peak on Steam: the highest number of people playing at the same time. GameDeveloper reported Space Marine 2 reached 225,690 concurrent Steam players, while Total War: WARHAMMER III had previously peaked at 166,754. On that basis, Space Marine 2 set the higher peak in the cited comparison. GameDeveloper reported the figures on September 10, 2024.
This is not a claim about current player counts, total players over time, sales, or simultaneous players across all platforms. It is specifically about Steam concurrency.
Which game has more Steam players now?
In Steam’s statistics snapshot dated October 8, 2026, Total War: WARHAMMER III had 53,896 current players, compared with 27,372 for Space Marine 2. Steam showed a 28,061 peak for Space Marine 2 that day. These are dated snapshot values, not permanent rankings; live concurrent counts change continuously. So the answer depends on the measure: Space Marine 2 has the higher cited all-time peak, while Total War: WARHAMMER III had more players online in that October 8 snapshot.
How the launch figures differ
GameDeveloper also reported that Space Marine 2 opened to 2 million players across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S one day after its official release. That total is an all-platform player figure, not a Steam concurrent peak or a sales number, and the report did not break it down by platform. It should not be compared directly with a Steam-only concurrent-player record.

The game launched on September 9, 2024. Focus Entertainment listed PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with Steam and the Epic Games Store as PC storefronts in its launch announcement. Focus’s launch announcement gives the release details.
What kind of game is Space Marine 2?
Focus describes Space Marine 2 as a third-person shooter and a direct sequel to the 2011 game. Its campaign can be played solo or in three-player co-op, alongside PvE and PvP modes. The publisher’s FAQ says newcomers do not need to have played the original to follow the story. Focus’s official game page lists the modes and editions, and its FAQ addresses the sequel’s story.

October 2026 update
Focus announced that Anniversary Update II became available October 1, 2026, for PC and current consoles. It adds Chaos Siege Mode and progression changes. The Space Wolves Champion Pack and Exorcists Cosmetic Pack are listed for Season Pass 3 holders. Focus’s update announcement has the release and eligibility details.

The 225,690 figure establishes a Steam concurrent peak for Space Marine 2 and exceeds the cited Steam peak for Total War: WARHAMMER III. It does not establish that Space Marine 2 has the highest peak across every Warhammer game on every PC storefront or console; the cited comparison is explicitly between those Steam figures. Focus identifies the game as licensed and approved by Games Workshop, but that franchise context does not change what the Steam metric measures. Focus’s FAQ describes the licensing.
