Alinea estimated Steam generated $16.5 billion through September; analyst Rhys Elliott expects the year-end total to “blow past $20B” as major releases arrive in the final quarter.
How much revenue did Steam make in 2026 so far?
In an October 1, 2026 report, Alinea Analytics estimated Steam revenue at $16.5 billion for the first nine months of the year. It put September at $1.7 billion—the platform’s best September to date—and the third quarter at $5.5 billion. Alinea said the nine-month estimate was up from $14.5 billion for the same period in 2025.
Those are estimates, not figures reported by Valve. Alinea’s report also put September revenue 13% above September 2025 and Q3 revenue 12% higher year over year. Alinea’s September analysis gives the figures and Elliott’s forecast.
Is Steam really on track to make more than $20 billion?
That is Alinea head of market analysis Rhys Elliott’s forecast, based on the estimate through September and the rest-of-year release schedule. Elliott wrote: “Given the insane release slate for the rest of the year, it’s safe to say Steam’s yearly revenue will blow past $20B for the first time.” It remains a forecast as of October 4, 2026; the full-year result is not yet known.

The estimate is for gross revenue across Steam transactions, not Valve’s profit or the amount Valve retains after payments to developers and other costs. An earlier Alinea estimate was described as covering all Steam transactions, including free-to-play projects, in GameDev Reports’ coverage. The contemporary forecast was also reported by PC Gamer.
Why do Steam revenue estimates differ?
Independent trackers may count different things, so their figures are not necessarily comparable. A September 24 comparison from GameDev Reports cited Video Game Insights’ estimate of $5.36 billion for the first half of 2026, down 5% year over year. Alinea’s estimate for the same half was $11.1 billion, up 14.5%.

The comparison suggests scope may account for part of the gap: Alinea’s figures include free-to-play transactions, while Video Game Insights counts copy sales. But the difference in both the totals and the direction of year-over-year change is not fully reconciled. These estimates should not be averaged or treated as measurements of the same revenue base. The figure is useful as an indication of the scale Alinea estimates for Steam’s transaction activity, but it is not an official Valve financial result. Alinea’s October report provides top-line estimates and a forecast, not a complete, reproducible explanation of its platform-wide model or a confidence interval for the $16.5 billion total. No Valve executive or regulator confirmation of the estimate appears in the cited coverage.
