However, downloads associated with any unofficial game-distribution site can expose you to malicious files, deceptive advertisements, redirects, bundled software, or potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). There is no authoritative evidence proving that every SteamUnlocked download is infected, but a clean scan of one file cannot establish that the site, its download hosts, or other releases are safe.
What “SteamUnlocked is a virus” gets wrong
“Virus” is being used as shorthand for a security risk, but the distinction matters. Microsoft uses malware as the broader term for malicious software, including threats such as trojans. Potentially unwanted applications are a separate category: they may show unwanted advertising, install unexpected software, or use a computer for cryptomining without necessarily meeting the definition of malware.

SteamUnlocked, as a domain or website, cannot itself be a virus. The relevant question is whether a particular download, installer, crack, advertisement, redirect, or bundled program is malicious or unwanted.

Is every SteamUnlocked download infected?
There is no authoritative forensic finding in the available evidence establishing that every SteamUnlocked download contains malware. Claims that all of its games are viruses are largely community assertions. Even a warning displayed by a subreddit is not the same as an independent malware-analysis report.
#1 Best Overall
That does not make the downloads safe. Community reports describe several different risk points, including malicious advertising, fake download buttons, redirects from file hosts, and altered or bundled files. These reports are anecdotal and should not be treated as proof that every file is compromised, but they explain why a download can be risky even when the game archive itself appears normal.
Why one antivirus result cannot settle the question
Security results are specific to the file and sample being examined:
- A clean scan is not a safety certificate. It says only that the scanner did not detect a threat in that particular sample at that time. It does not prove that the domain, download host, or another release is trustworthy.
- One detection is not automatically conclusive proof of malware. Microsoft acknowledges that legitimate downloads can be incorrectly flagged as false positives.
- Several warnings deserve serious attention. A cracked or modified executable is especially difficult to verify because it has been changed from the publisher’s original distribution.
Microsoft’s guidance is to obtain applications from trusted sources. Treat a zero-detection result as limited evidence, not as approval to run an untrusted installer.
How to scan a SteamUnlocked download in Windows 10 or 11
Do not open the archive or run its executable before scanning it. For a downloaded archive, folder, or executable:
- Right-click the item in File Explorer.
- Select Show more options if you are using the compact Windows 11 context menu.
- Select Scan with Microsoft Defender.
Microsoft documents this process in its guide to scanning an item with Windows Security. If you have a third-party antivirus installed, Microsoft Defender Antivirus may be in disabled mode; the third-party product should be the one providing real-time protection.
Use the right Defender scan
Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection. Under Current threats, select Scan options. Windows currently provides these choices:
Rank #3
| Scan | Best use |
|---|---|
| Quick scan | Checks common locations where malware is found. |
| Full scan | Scans every file and program on the device. Use this if you already opened a suspicious file. |
| Custom scan | Scans a selected file or folder, useful for a download directory. |
| Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) | Restarts the PC and scans from the Windows Recovery Environment before normal Windows loads. |
For a suspicious download that has not been opened, a custom scan is a practical targeted check. If you executed the file and then notice persistence, repeated detections, unusual activity, or protection being disabled, use a full scan and consider the offline scan. Selecting Start offline scan restarts Windows automatically, so save unsaved work first. Results appear in Windows Security → Protection history.

What to do if Defender detects something
Review detections at Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Threat history → See full history. Depending on the item, Windows may offer Remove, Restore, or View details.
- Remove deletes the detected file.
- Quarantine moves and blocks it so it cannot run normally.
- Restore returns a quarantined file; avoid doing this unless you have a strong, independently verified reason.
- Allow adds the item to the allowed list. Microsoft says this should be used only when both the file and its publisher are trusted.
To review anything previously exempted, open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Allowed threats. Select an item and choose Don’t allow if it should no longer be permitted.
Keep Defender protection enabled
Check Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Virus & threat protection settings → Manage settings. Keep Real-time protection, Cloud-delivered protection, and Automatic sample submission enabled unless you have a specific, controlled reason not to.
When Real-time protection is off, newly downloaded or opened files are not scanned immediately. Scheduled scans may continue, but a file might not be checked until the next scheduled scan. Disabling Defender without another active security product leaves the PC exposed.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you create a Defender exclusion?
Creating an exclusion is not a safety fix. Microsoft warns that exclusions prevent the excluded file, folder, file type, or process from being scanned. That can allow a real threat to run undetected.
The current path is Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Virus & threat protection settings → Manage settings → Exclusions → Add or remove exclusions → Add an exclusion. Do not exclude a suspicious game or crack merely because an online guide calls the detection a false positive. If you believe a legitimate file was misidentified, investigate the exact detection and use Microsoft’s false-positive reporting process rather than permanently weakening protection.
If you already ran the download
- Disconnect the PC from the internet if you suspect active malware or unusual network activity.
- Do not sign in to banking, email, gaming, or other important accounts from that machine until it has been checked.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and review Protection history.
- If symptoms persist or malware appears persistent, run Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan).
- Check Allowed threats and remove any unjustified exceptions.
- For an additional Microsoft tool, press Windows key + R, enter
%windir%system32mrt.exe, select OK, approve the elevation prompt with Yes, and follow the scan prompts.
A scan cannot guarantee that an already-compromised system is clean. If important accounts or sensitive data may have been exposed, use a known-clean device to change passwords and consider professional incident-response help or reinstalling Windows after backing up only trusted personal files.
Bottom line
SteamUnlocked is not literally a virus, and the available evidence does not prove that every download from it is infected. But that uncertainty is not the same as safety. Unofficial downloads, modified executables, deceptive ads, redirects, and bundled programs create meaningful risks, while antivirus scans can produce both false positives and false negatives. The safest approach is to use trusted official distribution sources. If you already have a file, scan it before opening it, keep Defender enabled, never treat one clean result as certification, and quarantine detections rather than disabling protection to force the game to run.
