Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 is an appealing way for newcomers to play two acclaimed Wii-era platformers together on Switch, but its value depends on what you already own and the price you can get now. The rerelease improves resolution and the interface, adds Storybook material and a music player, and offers button-and-stick or motion controls; it does not remake the core adventures. Returning players—especially those who own the first Galaxy through Super Mario 3D All-Stars—have less reason to pay for both again.
What is included in Super Mario Galaxy 1+2?
Nintendo released the two games together on Switch on October 2, 2025. The first follows Mario as he seeks Power Stars with Rosalina and the Lumas. In Galaxy 2, Mario travels aboard Starship Mario, with Yoshi and additional abilities and power-ups.

This is a rerelease, not a full remake. Nintendo says both games have an improved interface, button-and-stick or motion controls, an in-game music player, new Storybook content, and enhanced resolution. Nintendo’s September 19, 2025 announcement described those shared additions this way: “Both titles feature improved UI, the option to play with button and stick or motion controls, an in-game music player, new Storybook content and enhanced resolution.” Nintendo’s announcement does not attribute the statement to an individual speaker.
For the US release, Nintendo specifies 1080p on Switch and 4K on Switch 2 after a free update. The resolution upgrade and added material are welcome, but the core adventures remain largely intact.

Is Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 worth the price?
It is easiest to recommend to someone who has never played either game. The bundle brings both adventures together, and TechRadar’s reviewer praised their inventive level design and balance of accessibility and depth. Those are the reviewer’s judgments, not results of independent testing here.
For US launch-price context, Nintendo listed each digital game at $39.99 and said buyers could save by choosing the bundle. GamesRadar described the launch asking price as $40 for either game individually or $70 together, and questioned whether the upgrades justified that cost. These are historical launch figures, not current prices; current Nintendo, Amazon, and retailer prices have not been verified. Check the price and listing available to you before buying.

- Enhance your adventure even further with a free update to take advantage of the processing power of Nintendo Switch 2!
| Your situation | How to think about the purchase |
|---|---|
| You have never played either game | The bundle is the most straightforward way to get both acclaimed adventures on Switch. |
| You own the first Galaxy through Super Mario 3D All-Stars | TechRadar’s reviewer suggests skipping the first game here and buying Galaxy 2 digitally on its own if you want to revisit the sequel. |
| You have played both games recently | Consider whether improved resolution, interface changes, control options, and the added Storybook and music features are worth the price you can get now. |
| You have not played them in years | The updated presentation may make a return worthwhile, but the adventures themselves are largely unchanged. |
TechRadar’s reviewer reported spending around 25 hours across both games on Switch 2, in handheld and docked setups, using a 4K display and Pro Controller. That is one reviewer’s playtime, not a general completion-time estimate.
What changes on Switch 2?
Nintendo’s US product page specifies 4K on Switch 2 after a free update, compared with 1080p on Switch. Nintendo Support says software version 1.2.0 or later is required to play on Switch 2. Its version 1.3.1 update, released February 5, 2026, updated software information and did not change in-game content. Check Nintendo’s version history and compatibility details if you need to confirm your installed version.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should returning players check before buying?
- Which games you own: If your copy of the first Galaxy is from Super Mario 3D All-Stars, assess the sequel separately rather than assuming you need the bundle.
- How much the updates matter: The higher resolution, refreshed interface, control choices, Storybook material, and music player add to the package, but do not turn it into a substantially rebuilt version of either game.
- Your actual price: Nintendo’s and GamesRadar’s figures above describe US launch pricing in 2025. They do not establish what the collection costs today.
- Whether you want a physical copy: Current physical availability and retailer listings have not been verified. Check that the listing is live and confirm its price before ordering.
Which version should you buy?
If you are new to both games and can get the collection at a price you consider fair, the bundle offers two distinctive platformers in one release. If you already own the first game, buying Galaxy 2 digitally by itself may be the more economical way to revisit the sequel, as TechRadar’s review notes. If you have played both recently, the rerelease’s presentation and smaller additions may not justify buying them again.
