Yes. Super Mario Odyssey supports two-player co-op: Player 1 controls Mario, while Player 2 controls Cappy. You can play together on one console, and Nintendo also documents Nintendo Switch 2 GameShare options for nearby consoles and online play through GameChat.

What multiplayer means in Super Mario Odyssey

The game’s listed single-system player count is 1–2, according to Nintendo’s US product listing. Co-op is asymmetric: one player explores as Mario, and the other assists by controlling Cappy. It is not two independent Marios moving through the game world.

Cappy can be thrown at enemies and objects and used for the Cap Jump, while Mario keeps his usual movement abilities. Nintendo describes this as a way to team up by passing a friend a Joy-Con on its Mario & Cappy feature page.

How to start two-player co-op on one console

  1. Start the game and enter regular gameplay.
  2. While controlling Mario, press + to open the menu.
  3. Select Two Players.
  4. On Nintendo Switch, select Start in Two-Player Mode. On Nintendo Switch 2, select Share the Controllers.
  5. Assign a controller to each player and follow the on-screen prompts. A single horizontal Joy-Con uses SL and SR; a Joy-Con pair or Pro Controller uses L and R.
  6. Player 1 controls Mario and Player 2 controls Cappy. To swap the roles, press left on the directional buttons.

These menu labels and controller instructions are from Nintendo Support’s two-player instructions. A second suitable controller is needed for the second player; the particular controller arrangement depends on the hardware you have.

What to know about Switch Lite and controllers

Nintendo says compatibility and play experience may differ on Switch Lite, and additional accessories may be required. Check that your specific console and controller setup can provide controls for both players rather than assuming every Lite arrangement works the same way. A Joy-Con is an optional solution if you do not already have a suitable second controller, not a required purchase for everyone.
