Yes—if you’re interested in atmospheric sci-fi horror, exploration, and RPG character-building, System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is a reasonable place to start. You don’t need to play the 1994 System Shock first. Just know that this is an updated version of the 1999 game, not a remake: its clearer visuals and controls don’t replace its older, demanding combat and character systems.
Do you need to play the first System Shock?
No. System Shock 2 gives newcomers its own setup: in 2114, you wake from cryosleep aboard the FTL starship Von Braun. Mutants and robots are loose, and the rogue AI SHODAN threatens humanity. Nightdive’s launch feature explicitly presents the game to both first-time players and returning fans: Nightdive’s launch announcement.
Knowing the first game may add context, but the sequel’s central situation is understandable without it. You can begin here and follow the story through exploration and audio logs.
What does “remaster” mean for a new player?
It means the original game’s design is still here. Nightdive chose to update the 1999 release rather than rebuild it as a remake; founder and CEO Stephen Kick said the game was already playable and needed updated graphics, performance, and console support. The update includes high-resolution interface assets, an updated renderer, modern materials and shaders, ambient occlusion, performance work, controller navigation, quick bars for weapons and psi powers, and extensive remapping. Those changes can make the presentation and input more comfortable, but they do not turn the game into a contemporary shooter or redesign its underlying systems.
Expect to make consequential character choices and learn how your chosen specializations work. Reviews describe demanding combat and old-fashioned RPG conventions as part of the experience, not problems the remaster has removed. Push Square, for example, characterizes Normal difficulty as demanding in its PS5 review.

Will its older design suit you?
The remaster is a better fit if you like uncovering a hostile place at your own pace, piecing together events from audio logs, and shaping a character around RPG systems. It is less likely to click if your priority is fast, fluid gunplay, generous onboarding, or a full modern remake. Character specializations matter, so combat may feel punishing if your build and approach do not complement one another.
Think of the remaster as a clearer way to access a game from 1999—not a promise that every convention from that era will feel modern. That distinction is the main thing to weigh before buying or starting.

Should your first run be solo or co-op?
For a first playthrough, solo is the stronger choice if you want the intended feeling of isolation and fear. Nightdive producer Daniel Grayshon told PC Gamer, “You should probably play it in singleplayer first to get the true experience of System Shock 2,” explaining that co-op changes that atmosphere. PC Gamer reports that co-op supports up to four players; Nightdive’s feature page also advertises cross-play: PC Gamer’s co-op interview and Nightdive’s game page.

Steam lists the PC release date as June 26, 2025: Steam’s store page. Nightdive’s August 21, 2025 patch 1.2 notes list the update on Steam, GOG, Epic, Humble, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. Patch 1.2 added custom campaign support for fan missions. It also added options to disable red pain flashes and other full-screen effects, and to customize single-player save slots. Custom campaign support does not by itself guarantee that every fan mission will work; check each mission’s requirements.
The Xbox Wire interview includes console-specific claims—native 4K on Xbox One X and Xbox Series X|S, and 120 Hz support on Xbox Series X|S. Those are Nightdive’s stated targets for the named Xbox systems, not universal results across platforms.

Who should play it?
- Start it if you want a self-contained entry into System Shock 2’s sci-fi horror, enjoy exploration and audio-log storytelling, and are willing to learn an older RPG-shooter’s systems.
- Consider your expectations if you mainly want modern gunplay, extensive onboarding, or a remake built from the ground up. The remaster improves access and controls but retains the original design.
- Choose solo first for atmosphere; choose co-op if sharing the experience matters more to you than preserving the game’s isolation.
